The blast range of the marty grenade is bigger than how far you can throw it... Fail.

First and foremost,
WHY DO PEOPLE NEED MARTYRDOM IN THE FIRST PLACE?
Answer that question first before we go onto placing blame to those who die from it.Comment

LOL, anti-teabag device.
The best reason right there.

People don't "need" Martyrdom, nor do they need Stopping Power, Steady Aim, etc. These are simply game play variables.
Martyrdom obviously creates tension and elevates the in-game chaos. That makes for some exciting gaming! It started as a "anti-teabagging" feature, but quickly became one of the most talked about part of the game.
It's part of vanilla CoD4 and I enjoy it. Why? Because I play a rusher most often. It has trained me how to rush, but to be smarter about it. I almost never get killed by Martyrdom, and when I do, it's normally my fault.
I suggest that we all stop and think about that when we die by a martyr nade. It's normally your fault. Deal with it. Oh, that concept of "fairness" everyone keeps bringing up is not something which exists in war. Don't fool yourself.
Deal with the "hardship" and come out a stronger person. Whine and complain about the path you walk and you get zero from the experience.
WARNING: SHAMELESS PROMOTION BELOW
Martyrdom can be taken out of any modded server. BTW, our server does not have Martyrdom or Last Stand enabled. It has a modified health system in which it takes 2 minutes to fully recover versus the standard 30 seconds. It has no red shot blips on the mini map to give your position away.
It is the best of hardcore and softcore blended together. Stop in and give it a try. TheFPS.org 76.74.154.9Comment

Dying every two seconds by grenades is in-game chaos, thats for sure. Tension? More like anger.
Doubtful. To be honest, most of the time you want to get in the action no matter what. This is not BF2, where you have to wait 15 seconds looking straight up into the sky waiting for that t-bag. You will replay your death (most of the time), or instantly respawn into the action again. No one T-bags in this game as much as they would in BF2/2142, or cares.
In all honestly,
It's a crutch for those players that need an extra random chance to get a kill without any actual "skill" in the game, balancing the playing field. I put skill in quotations because you can still master it and use it in specific scenarios, like rushing a group of players in a hallway, etc, but it is still based on a computer dropping a grenade and you playing a game of chance. What's the difference between martyrdom and last stand? YOU get to control who to shoot and when in Last Stand, not the computer. So why don't people use Last Stand? I'm pretty sure it gives you that extra chance for a kill, just like martyrdom.
Your right, most of the time it is their fault. They physically put themselves into that position to die. They could be running around knifing and got stuck in a doorway, or ran out of sprint. It's still their fault for letting themselves do that. If you die from last stand, however, do you get as angry as you would with martyrdom? Probably not, since they killed you fair and square.
I just get upset when I see the same rinse and repeat argument supporting martyrdom: "It's your fault, stop playing like that, etc"
People forget that this is the only real perk that can gain you a kill without doing anything, literally. Thats why it's such a hot topic.
What I do like about COD4's system is that you can modify servers, like you said sonic, and you can still have people play on them (unlike BF2's ranking system, where if you disable extra weapons.. it goes unranked).Comment

I only occasionally run into folks using Martyrdom anymore. I just don't worry about it. If someone chooses to use that perk over other more valuable perks, it's still an advantage for me.
The whole argument that folks get "undeserved kills" is unimportant to me. If you are egotistical and need to have a certain K/D to be content, these things are probably important. I simply don't care much about what other people think of my name and those numbers on the scoreboard.
I'm playing to have a good time, a sense of comraderie with my mates and to win the round. If I die to someone's martyr nades during the course of that -- then bring it on.
If you are talking about organized competition, I could fully understand why Martyrdom should be disallowed. But, we're talking about the pubs here.
I believe in Freedom. Even it if that Freedom is inconvenient to me from time=to-time. In this instance, I believe that people should have the freedom to choose and use that perk without being discriminated against.Comment

Agreed, I have no problem with martyrdom other then the added power of the grenade.
Either tone it down to a regular grenade, or make the fuse longer. (The latter would probably be better, as if it's toned down, you'll hardly ever get a clean kill with it)
Lolololol, and Last Stand should pull out an RPG.

Honestly, if I could adjust the parameters of Martyrdom, I would. The idea of it dropping a Flash or Stun nade isn't a terrible idea at all.
Just think if we could set it to Smoke and set a custom color!
