Re: PlaneWhore's top 4 BF2 changes that need to be in the 1.5 patch

First of all, Planewhore, you are a good player. I've read a lot of your various posts, and you make a lot of valid points. The problems is, a lot of us aren't nowhere near your skill level. Some can plane and chopper whore and rack up the kills, while rarely dying. Some can armor whore and rarely die And some can ground pound, getting lots of kills, and some how manage not to die so much. Forget points...having a good kill/death ratio is what I'm all about. I am average in planes and armor, but I enjoy being on the ground. I hate that so many using anything but their gun to try and kill me. I hate those noobs that pull out the at rocket before they'd consider using a gun. I hate the return of that noob tube. The fact is though, points aside, it's nice at the end of the round to have a good kill/death ratio.

I don't agree with your nade spamming solution. I'm not sure what I would do about it, but almost taking them away is not my ideal solution.

I agree with parts of your claymore solution. The problem is that I don't think anybody wants them to go back to being useless.

I 100% agree with your points on the damn noobtube. It's bad enough that the AT guys are using their AT rockets as noobtubes in CQC, but now the assault guys are back to doing it too. I'd love to see them make the area of explosion bigger so these noobs would die too. The best fix is what you suggested though.

As for the J10 and the A2A missles, I'd love to see them completely take away the A2A missles. I remember the pilots that were so skilled that no matter how much I tried, I would get shot down by the planes MGs. Now it's a complete joke. If the A2A missles weren't there, then people would go back to using the MG to shoot planes down.

One more thing they need to work on is this rediculous prone delay thing. In it's current state, it's just stupid. I'm tired of being prone, and trying to get back up, only to sometimes pause in the crouch position and end up back prone.

All this stuff is probably never going to happen though because they are bringing out this stupid bf2142 game. I played the beta and realize that it will be different in it's final version, but after 20 or so hours on the beta, not once did I have the fun that I do with BF2, and I even was better in BF2142, but BF2 is still better...even with it's flaws.

I don't like grenades because in the current fashion they are used they are extremely dangerous and at the very least disruptive (when I'm forced to sprint and dive to get away every two seconds) and yet they require absolutely no skill to achieve either of these effects. It's not a problem with grenades themselves but with how they can be spammed over and over again - this is the dynamic that makes them exploitable. Less grenades doesn't make them any less useful but rather in order to make them AS useful as your old loadout of 4 grenades you've got to think before you throw and aim them.

I spend plenty of time driving planes and flying tanks admittedly which would actually in some ways make my points more valid because obviously I wouldn't have a grenade bias either way. But fact is I do play infantry quite frequently (it's about 50/50 for me at this point) and that experience is what has formed my very thorough post.

phanewhore, this is the most professional post i have ever read and if ea/dice pass over your thread it would be their mistake. i think all of your pionts are very important, and you gave solutions/suggestions very well. i would love to see the spamming of nades to stop. in karkland i dont even spawn at the southern base anymore. i know that the nade fight is going to happen no matter what for at least the first 5 minutes. and all that happpens is i get tk'ed by someone that thinks he is going to miss out on 10-15 easy kills by throwing nades the minute that they spawn into the server. Jalahalbad is just as bad. when the game starts, and the mec gets the lake base it turns into the ugliest matches that i have ever been a part of. everyone hiding behind rocks and throwing greanades at another rock! the front line stalls at that point, turning the usmc base into a bloodbath of invading squads of mec spawnkillers and snipers picking away at anyone making it out of the base
anyway phanewhore keep up the good post, maybe someday we will get a world at peace and games like bf2 will turn into bf2(BE FRIENDLY 2)

God almighty, back on the GL's again. They had to revert back some because the GL was crap because of the nerfing it took. They took damage away when the added the arming delay. Why the arming didn't stay I don't know and I don't care, the assault kits are CRAP. Medic is assault, which I see why some may want grenades reduced. Thats the problem with changing kits over the complaining over this kills me blah blah blah. The most lethal crowd currently should actually be the least.

"extremely dangerous and at the very least disruptive" thats because they are grenades. Death, mayham, shock and awe.

You take a medic's kit and use your beloved rifle: so are the others and it all ends in a kill/revive routine.
Doesn't it sound boring to you?
BF2 is so great because of its diversity of roles you can play. Everyone is participating in the action in his own way, adding its own personality making the battlefield a whole and life like experience.
I like people throwing grenades at me, I love people shooting me at point blank with a rocket! It makes me feel alive and makes the game believable. But I hate cheaters!
I don't want a bunch of robots having the same style as me, cause I'd be bored very soon.
Please, ask for bugs and cheats to be removed, not these game play changes.

If you don't like reading a novel you can skip to the bolded parts to get to the meat of the post.

This post was sparked by countless various conversations I've had with random squad members in real Battlefield 2 games with VOIP and our near unanimous agreement on certain game balance issues that have really taken away from our overall Battlefield 2 experience. These aren't all uber-l33t gamers I've discussed this with but casual gamers who want a little more variety and balance. These changes can officially be referred to as the Skillful Gameplay Encouragement Adjustments. The main focus of these changes is to promote balanced combat styles, discourage exploitation of various broken gameplay aspects and encourage people to try and use the rifles for a change.

                In no particular order:

                1) Grenades. The goal: to reduce spamability and exploitability (hmm did I just invent two new words?) of grenades but retain the intended function and usage. By reducing the unsavory and unskillful aspects of grenades you also encourage them to be used intelligently.

Often times on maps I find that over 50% of the total kills over the duration of a round are the result hand grenades. Now don't misunderstand my intentions... I have absolutely no problem with grenades explosive potential when used correctly (to root out a dug in camper for example) but I do have a problem with grenades in the current implementation that allows them to completely replace and exceed the effectiveness of a players main rifle (see Volx).

Two simple changes to the BF2 code will fix this problem

                a) The support class ammo packs can no longer resupply grenades (supply crates will still be able to resupply them). This will stop the grenade fest that happens every single round at Karkand and put a rough hard cap on the number of grenades thrown per player per death (excluding an encounter with a supply crate).

                b) The starting number of grenades will be reduced on a class by class basis. Classes with the most diverse skills will be reduced the most while classes with a limited combat focus will retain the most grenades. 1 grenade for medic/spec-op/sniper/anti-tank/engineer and three grenades for the assault and support classes. This will encourage the skillful and intelligent use of grenades rather than the purely random tossing of them for easy kills.

                2) Claymores. Goal: to make claymores an effective defensive trap that has to be used intelligently and still can be defeated by various methods.

We've all seen these players. The "claymore runners". The snipers without an ounce of skill who run through heavily populated area on a suicide mission (the alley on Karkand for example) and toss claymores like they're going out of style. These players know that when they drop that claymore it's pretty much a guaranteed kill and there is absolutely nothing the enemy team can do about it (other than die to it already and get it over with). The same discouraging scenario exists when a squad spots claymores on a flag in advance (blocking the capture radius) and then has to suicide/revive on said claymore to remove it.

One simple change will solve this exploitation (a change that used to be in effect but was removed why again?):

                a) Explosives destroy claymores. That includes grenades, tank shells, the n00b tube, c4, TV missile, artillery ect.. ect. This allows people a realistic method to remove an offending claymore without sacrificing a teammate. Furthermore when a claymore can be destroyed via explosive a sniper is suddenly much more concerned with hiding said claymore rather than just running in to whatever populated area and tossing them at random. This is especially true because said populated area will be exploding quite a bit.

                3) n00b tube.
Goal: To make it so n00b tubers can no longer fire the grenade launcher at point blank range effectively.

Why oh why DICE did you change this back in 1.4? We know you changed it (as one of your expansive list of undocumented changes) so fess up already. The n00b tube has made a comeback as unskilled players can yet again fire it point blank at their feet for an easy unskilled kill. Why bother with a difficult to use rifle when a tube is a 1 shot kill and is extremely easy to aim? I recently got revived during a round of Sharqi and ended up with a different kit (F2000) and a full compliment of tube grenades. Four point blank tube grenades later I had four ridiculous easy kills that I would've otherwise have had to aim for with a rifle. But I empathize with the plight of the underpowered and otherwise generic assault kit and I really do believe DICE does need to do something to improve them but NOT by boosting that annoying tube again.

As with most of my suggestions this fix is ridiculously simple:

                a) Implement a minimum arming distance on the tube before the grenade explodes. How hard is this to implement DICE? We don't need any of this buggy bouncing tube crap... just make it so if you fire that thing at your feet it doesn't explode. Problem solved.

                4) J-10/A2A missiles. Goal: To balance the J-10 and reintroduce skilled air to air combat

We all know the story with the J-10 being god-moded so I'll cut right to the fix:

                a) Reintroduce 1.12 A2A missile dynamics (A2A only). This effectively balances all the various aircraft (however the J-10 does retain a slight edge as DICE intended IMO). Best of all this is easy for DICE to implement and I mention this again because DICE has complained in the past about balancing the J-10 being too difficult. If you don't understand the beautiful dynamics that made 1.12 air to air missiles so balanced then you'll just have to trust that the PlaneWhore himself knows what he's talking about.

That completes my list and this little post. I know DICE does read these and other popular Battlefield 2 forums and I can only hope that they take notice and give the gamers what they want for a change. I am of the honest opinion that if DICE implemented the four easy changes above the quality of the gameplay would reach an all-time high. In fact I think if DICE included all of the above balance adjustments it would exceed the sum total of all the positive changes DICE has made throughout the extensive list of patches (minus the two new maps).

With Battlefield 2142 on the horizon and looking rather dissapointing (IMO) I'd really appreciate DICE taking the time and putting in the effort to make this game as excellent as possible till the next batch of amazing games rolls arounds.

                Feedback appreciated and debate encouraged.

since you are so smart and know how the game should be built, i challenge you to make your own mod. and make it the way the game is supposed to be played by your specifications. i wish u good luck.

What's so wrong with him giving constructive feedback. He's trying to improve the game. I'm sick and tired of you guys saying, play another game or make your own game.

They designed this game in a way that battles last longer. But with needing lot of shots to kill a person, they have created lot of exploits. Pronediving, nade spamming, reviving over and over. I just think they overdone it and made the game not flow well.

Thank god they removed the squad hopping for public play, I mean I expect to kill few people and they should freaking leave me alone for a while then.

Btw I like your dog with the waterpipe sig better.

if you read the thread at the start of the thread he said that he and OTHERS disscussed the problems they see. some of you are flaming him as if he wants the game changed to his advantage. i see this way to often from people today in the real world. phanewhore post his opinion up on the board for disscussion, only to have people to qoute him as if they read the post and tell him to deal or take a hike. nice, reminds me of someone.... president bush must be a tbf2 community memeber and post daily.

diffently agree with this point, and if it is in the movies it has to be real, right?

Jason Bourne: I can tell you the license plate numbers of all six cars outside. That's just a silly pointless comment Batausu. I have more time played as combat infantry than I have in any vehicle (including planes). I'm also one of the most skilled infantry players you will ever have the displeasure of meeting and I handle annoying situations such as grenade rain much better than your average player.

I don't like the poor class balance either but that's a seperate issue from unskilled claymore spamming, grenade spamming ect. Don't try and argue this is the only thing that makes these classes viable because that simply isn't true. I'll admit they are inferior to medic and they should be improved but not in an unskilled fashion such as making them more able to spam grenades and other kinds of explosives. Even if certain classes are abandoned after my changes because they no longer function as a spammer class I still think it's a win for Battlefield because even if at least when I'm fighting medics they're using rifles and as a result the gameplay improves for everyone across the board.

I also think it's worth mentioning:

If you appreciate the multitude of BF2 classes then you'll absolutely hate BF2142. They essentially did away with the spec-ops class, the assault class and the anti-tank class merging them in to other classes. DICE gets it from that perspective because they know that these classes don't really bring all that much to the table so they got rid of them.

I know at first my changes (if implemented) would be very upseting for some people. The people who absolutely depend on the ease of use with grenades and claymores to be effective. So it will be upsetting for these people at first. The funny thing about the human brain though is it can adapt and once you start actually using your rifle instead of a hailstorm of grenades you'll get better at it and you'll start enjoying it more. Believe me when I say nothing is more satasfying then actually being able to see your opponent when you deliver the death blow.
