People do find ways to get the kill as fast as possible, Im afraidn running around with grenades as a first hand choice of weaponry doesnt seem like an intended purpose.
But grenades are only effective in that way because people LET it be effective. As I said many times in this thread, nades just aren't a problem for me and I'm always assaulting and taking flags.

Of course, if you run into the middle of Hotel on Karkand... what do you expect to happen? Explosives are the perfect remedy for killing many people that are concentrated in one place.

BF2 is based on modern warfare right? Why do you think most engagements in modern warfare are at long distances? And those that aren't (close quarters), usually end in seconds.

The reason is that high explosive weaponry with large blast radii are way too easy & cheap to make now.

One of my primary tactics is to keep a good distance in any engagement. It can be done, because I do it and end the round with a great K/D ratio.

I say it again, don't run into the meatgrinder and you'll be just fine. I also say again, if grenades are nerfed then there will be something else that people use ... the problem isn't grenades ... the problem is when a ton of people all run into the same place there are countless methods to get easy and many kills... grenades are just the most straightforward atm.

Take "ambush" for example, "camping" in gaming terms. Im going to bring up airsofting as an example again. A very strong and used tactic in skirmishes so far has been "ambush". 100% of all ambushes Ive played so far have been done with using "landmines" (again, dried peas, firecrackers, a claymore kind of looking landmine with ignition system, harmless, but a perfect landmine imitation in airosft terms) and guns. I have not seen, used on nor used grenades as a primary choice of attacking. And airsofting isnt a game with live ammo either so people dont care much about "dieing", just like in games.
Please don't compare airsoft to BF2... there are a wide range of differences. You may not care about losing, but you know you won't spawn back in 8 seconds... right? You still want to be in the fight. There are countless differences between real life and in-game.

Let me put it this way so you understand in airsoft terms.. picture this scenario:

Everyone in your team has 2 hand grenades. There are 10 of you. You are defending against 10 other guys. All ten opposing forces take cover behind a wooden cabin. They are all back there. What is your first move? Do you just sit there or do you have each guy in your squad throw a grenade over the cabin? A single grenade will kill everyone.

So you throw the nades (obvious choice) from cover and they all get "killed". They come out and start complaining about nade spamming and what do you say?

"hey guys, don't complain. Next time spread out and maintain frag distance... move slower and take cover.. geez"

SWAT4, another example. Pepper spray. Pepper spray has proven to be a universal weapon for all sorts of situations.

AWP in CS, Ive seen a LOT of close range battles won with this weapon.

        The list goes on.
List of what? Again, if you have pepper spray in SWAT4 and an entire group stacks up against a door and moves so close together they almost get stuck in the doorway what is to stop you from spraying right at them?

Every game, and real life, show that people are smart enough to do things with as less wasted energy as possible and as risk-less as they can. This is great, people think, OK. But should akward gameplay styles be accepted or should developers try to change it so the game would indeed look a little more "conventional"?
Every game has awkward gameplay styles... every... single... game. It's alot hard than you think to enforce a gameplay style. In fact, even America's Army -- one of the most restricted games out there -- still has silly situations happen... and the whole focus of that game is realism. Since it's free, the devs don't care if they don't sell copies... gameplay comes first.

Your main point seems to be "if players have figured out a way how to kill more efficiently, by using items the way they were not intended to be used, then so be it". Allright, sounds logical. But really, by the same logic, exploits of game mechanics would be acceptable aswell.
Aha! "Intented to be used"... my favorite phrase. How do you know what's intended? Surely, the devs know about nades right? They even announced on this forum that they specifically allowed throwing grenades while jumping because they wanted to retain the gameplay style of Battlefield.

        So whose intention? Your intention?

Ive constantly engaged people in open areas who jump and do all sorts of things while throwing 4 grenades at me, and THEN engage me with a firearm. Thats in open area, at about 30-60 feet range. I dont find this to be a good way to have the game played.
If someone engages me that way this will die... every time. What about you? Do they kill you... then you have a problem.

Because this is a video game, you can't restrict people from doing stupid stuff. Just think about it. If he wants to run in the middle of the street and throw grenades at you... so be it... the game is made so that you can easily avoid that. If you can't, train up soldier!

        Let's think about this logically:

        - You're running in the middle of the street (oop! mistake already! You shouldn't be doing that).

        - 2 guys run into the middle of the street a few meters away... wild west style. They start jumping and throwing grenades. What do you do?

        - You lay down and shoot them? You die.
        - You run forward at them? You die.
        - You start running from side to side? You die.
        - You run away from the trajectory of the grenades and take cover. You live.

Live and learn.. live and learn.

Something like that I suggested myself, but referring to ammo bags, not grenades. Since ammo bags would be unavailable for a longer time, spammers will soon run out of grenades and will be forced to use other weapons. Same rule could be enforced on med kits, but it seams nobody complains about those yet.

And I have not said otherwise.

BF2 is based on modern warfare right? Why do you think most engagements in modern warfare are at long distances? And those that aren't (close quarters), usually end in seconds.
And I have not said otherwise. The thing I DONT like is when people choose grenades as a first weapon of choice in almost all kinds of engagements. Tell me that is right. If the game allows you to use grenades at all times as if it was your primary, while relying on the opponents firearms being inefficient, then that is a problem, at least thats the way I see it.

The reason is that high explosive weaponry with large blast radii are way too easy & cheap to make now.
So you want BF2 to be a battle of whos best with dealing with explosives? May I ask you, why the hell do they have firearms in the game?

C4 throwing, G-Launcher use and DICEs attempts to stop those kind of engagements are proof that DICE still believes in firearms being the first hand choices of weaponry.

One of my primary tactics is to keep a good distance in any engagement. It can be done, because I do it and end the round with a great K/D ratio.
Thats all fine and dandy for you, especially after youve been telling about being in the front lines of engagement and assaulting flags. So much for good distance. In my experience, its the distance that is giving grenades an advantage. Grenades are useless at close range, they are excellent as anti infantry at medium range and they are again useless at long range. Thing is, a "grenadier" can close a distance without much of a punishment because it takes up to 5 bursts or more to take a hopping bastard down. If itll take you 5+ bursts to kill someone at range, and he can cap you with a trows while being mobile, tell me that is right.

I have never said the problem is grenades. But I have said that the problem is in grenades being useful in many situations. Make it so that they are effective in certain scenarios, not in most of scenarios.

Please don't compare airsoft to BF2... there are a wide range of differences. You may not care about losing, but you know you won't spawn back in 8 seconds... right? You still want to be in the fight. There are countless differences between real life and in-game.
Actually I prefer to compare BF2 to airsoft because I believe they are extremely alike. Were playing scrims, and often play with "respawns" where people just jog back to the "safe zone", from where the "dead" are released at 3-5 minute intervals. They can rest, have a smoke, and be back in the game in notime. The more I play airsoft, the more I see parallels with Battlefield 2. They are not the same, but there are things, up to psychological level of combat, that are extremely alike.

Intended use of grenades. I do it all the time, in airsofting and in BF2. I do it in every game because that is how nades are intended to be used. Combating enemies from behind cover. I dont have ANY problems with "meatgrinder" at Karkand because people position themselves to favour grenade combat.

They often make a tactical mistake and I believe they should pay for it, fulltime.

My main issue is what Ive been talking about. Grenader being able to combat a rifleman in open area battle while sustaining mobility, while the rifleman has to deal with BF2 firearm shooting restrictions. Either make grenading a serious tactical disadvantage or make rifles more accurate and deadly across the board.

So you throw the nades (obvious choice) from cover and they all get "killed". They come out and start complaining about nade spamming and what do you say?
Nothing, at the first sign of a nade they usually run like rabbits because those firecrackers make hell of a noise and I sometimes use dried beans as shrapnel and those are way bigger . Plus, they never whine. In real life, as in BF2, more often than not its the targets mistake to put himself into a position where they can be targeted with a grenade. If they FORCE the attacker to use a grenade (in an obvious way) , then they have made an even bigger mistake.

"hey guys, don't complain. Next time spread out and maintain frag distance... move slower and take cover.. geez"
Our airsoft games are tactically pretty advanced. Most of our players are ex-mil.

List of what? Again, if you have pepper spray in SWAT4 and an entire group stacks up against a door and moves so close together they almost get stuck in the doorway what is to stop you from spraying right at them?
Thing is, SWAT4 has working firearms and grenades. I dare you to show me an officer running into pepple with a can of pepper (in real life). Its not how it should be. Pepper spray in SWAT4 should be effective, but it has almost no tactical disadvantages because it has a very long range.

I havent said the games dont have akward gamestyles. But I do know that restricting gameplay is a LOT easier than you make it out to be. Just read these forums with a little more attention and youll understand. The most important is to come out with an idea that has all pros and cons covered, THEN go for making that idea work. So far DICE has done things in a simple matter and fashion. Ive messed around with files and such, concering avio-aspect of BF2 and I KNOW now for sure, that DICE doesnt put in a fraction of attention into gameplay changes. They change things, they want to "repair" the game. But they dont do their research.

Aha! "Intented to be used"... my favorite phrase. How do you know what's intended? Surely, the devs know about nades right? They even announced on this forum that they specifically allowed throwing grenades while jumping because they wanted to retain the gameplay style of Battlefield.

                So whose intention? Your intention?
I guess. Im use common sense and DICEs own history of attempts of gameplay changes. Hardly grenads are any different than C4 chucking and the last one got cut. Allowing to throw grenades while jumping is all fine aslong as it wont compete with rifles, and heres the main issue for me- they DO compete with rifles.

If someone engages me that way this will die... every time. What about you? Do they kill you... then you have a problem.
Somehow I really dont think this is true. Every time someone deals in absolutes someone else comes along and tells otherwise. Not saying youre not good, but youre basically saying youve never died by a nade.

Because this is a video game, you can't restrict people from doing stupid stuff. Just think about it. If he wants to run in the middle of the street and throw grenades at you... so be it... the game is made so that you can easily avoid that. If you can't, train up soldier!
Dude. If throwing grenades has no tactical backfires, then thats a problem. Training is one thing, but lets discuss the general use of grenades in BF2, and not "If you cant handle that, suck it up b*tch because you suck" methods of gameplay improvement.

                Let's think about this logically:
                Failed in your first attempt...

                - You're running in the middle of the street (oop! mistake already! You shouldn't be doing that).
I run near cover at almost all times.

You live.
                Exactly my point.

2 targets using "logically speaking" a weapon that at current moment is tactically a WRONG decision, chase you away, even though you have a clear shot at them and they are both armed with weapons with which they cant take you down.

They chase you away with grenades.

Live and learn.. live and learn.
Play and learn. I prefer the motto "Figure out and counter." myself.

This is probably up there with STA situation pre 1.12. Some people dont see that much of a problem. Some people say there is a problem.

All I need to do is watch Volx play, and I have to shake my head.

infantry has been nerfed enough. The only thing which warrants a 1.5 patch is the indestructible claymores, J10, and possibly grenade spam. Anyone that mentions bunny hopping, dolphine diving, crouching, please slit your wrists now.

Agreed. Fix those three game exploits and you'll never see another post like this from me again. If they get those three aspects right this game will be as close to perfect as is possible.

And yet... strangely... you're still calling yourself 'one of the best players I'll ever see' and still no mention of who you actually are. Lots of references to 'stats that prove he's one of the best', but still no 'meat on the bone' as it were. Because all it seems to me is you're just a... well... plane whore... who can't figure out to play infantry, and is having a good ol' fashioned whinge because his basic tactics are at all times predictable. Don't worry... You're not alone... I've noticed that just about every single jet/chopper whore never displays their stats. We all know the reason why.

The game doesn't need to change. You need to learn how to play.

PS... couldn't care less about suggestions with regard to air-assets. Unlike you, I don't try to talk about things I'm unaware of, using words like 'balance'. If you say the J-10 is unbalanced, I'll take your word for it. But your opinion of infantry requirements, as far as I'm concerned, is pretty well useless. You simply don't know what you're talking about, and the great bulk of people that contribute to this thread are other ex-jet/chopper whores, who have finally realised that at an infantry level, they basically have no skill, and no awareness.

Combat, youre a moron. PW has posted up his PID numerous times. I can count at least 3 of his profiles that hes mentioned throughout debates. He is good. If I recall, his assault rifle KDR was 4:1? I can be wrong here.

Is that clear enough for you? I don't hide my identity because my skill and experience on the ground only strengthens my arguement against grenades and claymores. Is it my fault you can't read and/or have the attention span of a toddler?

But as I take all statistics with a grain of salt if you doubt my skills as a medic feel free to join me on the StrafeRight 24/7 City Maps server as it is currently the only server I play. I'll put you to shame. One thing you'll notice about me when I play infantry as I get well over 90% of my kills with my rifle and that's something I take great pride in when I watch these other scum on my favorite server mucking it up by doing nothing but dropping claymores or tossing grenades for the entire duration of the round.

Am I a plane whore? Yes.

Am I an armor whore? Yes.

Am I also a damn fine medic? Absolutely.

If I spent all of my time in a plane or a tank I really wouldn't give a crap about infantry balance. But fact is I love the infantry combat aspect to this game just as much as every other aspect and as such I actually care about the balance of the combat because it directly effects my gameplay.

A little lower at the moment but as I'm always getting better and refining my skills I'm currently at about a 5:1 actual assault rifle K/D with my current gameplay performance and as a result it's raising my current numbers quite quickly. Which certainly isn't bad for a player like me who is almost always leading the charge which is pointed directly at my 32 opponents.

If you don't like reading a novel you can skip to the bolded parts to get to the meat of the post.

This post was sparked by countless various conversations I've had with random squad members in real Battlefield 2 games with VOIP and our near unanimous agreement on certain game balance issues that have really taken away from our overall Battlefield 2 experience. These aren't all uber-l33t gamers I've discussed this with but casual gamers who want a little more variety and balance. These changes can officially be referred to as the Skillful Gameplay Encouragement Adjustments. The main focus of these changes is to promote balanced combat styles, discourage exploitation of various broken gameplay aspects and encourage people to try and use the rifles for a change.

                              In no particular order:

                              1) Grenades. The goal: to reduce spamability and exploitability (hmm did I just invent two new words?) of grenades but retain the intended function and usage. By reducing the unsavory and unskillful aspects of grenades you also encourage them to be used intelligently.

Often times on maps I find that over 50% of the total kills over the duration of a round are the result hand grenades. Now don't misunderstand my intentions... I have absolutely no problem with grenades explosive potential when used correctly (to root out a dug in camper for example) but I do have a problem with grenades in the current implementation that allows them to completely replace and exceed the effectiveness of a players main rifle (see Volx).

Two simple changes to the BF2 code will fix this problem

                              a) The support class ammo packs can no longer resupply grenades (supply crates will still be able to resupply them). This will stop the grenade fest that happens every single round at Karkand and put a rough hard cap on the number of grenades thrown per player per death (excluding an encounter with a supply crate).

                              b) The starting number of grenades will be reduced on a class by class basis. Classes with the most diverse skills will be reduced the most while classes with a limited combat focus will retain the most grenades. 1 grenade for medic/spec-op/sniper/anti-tank/engineer and three grenades for the assault and support classes. This will encourage the skillful and intelligent use of grenades rather than the purely random tossing of them for easy kills.

                              2) Claymores. Goal: to make claymores an effective defensive trap that has to be used intelligently and still can be defeated by various methods.

We've all seen these players. The "claymore runners". The snipers without an ounce of skill who run through heavily populated area on a suicide mission (the alley on Karkand for example) and toss claymores like they're going out of style. These players know that when they drop that claymore it's pretty much a guaranteed kill and there is absolutely nothing the enemy team can do about it (other than die to it already and get it over with). The same discouraging scenario exists when a squad spots claymores on a flag in advance (blocking the capture radius) and then has to suicide/revive on said claymore to remove it.

One simple change will solve this exploitation (a change that used to be in effect but was removed why again?):

                              a) Explosives destroy claymores. That includes grenades, tank shells, the n00b tube, c4, TV missile, artillery ect.. ect. This allows people a realistic method to remove an offending claymore without sacrificing a teammate. Furthermore when a claymore can be destroyed via explosive a sniper is suddenly much more concerned with hiding said claymore rather than just running in to whatever populated area and tossing them at random. This is especially true because said populated area will be exploding quite a bit.

                              3) n00b tube.
Goal: To make it so n00b tubers can no longer fire the grenade launcher at point blank range effectively.

Why oh why DICE did you change this back in 1.4? We know you changed it (as one of your expansive list of undocumented changes) so fess up already. The n00b tube has made a comeback as unskilled players can yet again fire it point blank at their feet for an easy unskilled kill. Why bother with a difficult to use rifle when a tube is a 1 shot kill and is extremely easy to aim? I recently got revived during a round of Sharqi and ended up with a different kit (F2000) and a full compliment of tube grenades. Four point blank tube grenades later I had four ridiculous easy kills that I would've otherwise have had to aim for with a rifle. But I empathize with the plight of the underpowered and otherwise generic assault kit and I really do believe DICE does need to do something to improve them but NOT by boosting that annoying tube again.

As with most of my suggestions this fix is ridiculously simple:

                              a) Implement a minimum arming distance on the tube before the grenade explodes. How hard is this to implement DICE? We don't need any of this buggy bouncing tube crap... just make it so if you fire that thing at your feet it doesn't explode. Problem solved.

                              4) J-10/A2A missiles. Goal: To balance the J-10 and reintroduce skilled air to air combat

We all know the story with the J-10 being god-moded so I'll cut right to the fix:

                              a) Reintroduce 1.12 A2A missile dynamics (A2A only). This effectively balances all the various aircraft (however the J-10 does retain a slight edge as DICE intended IMO). Best of all this is easy for DICE to implement and I mention this again because DICE has complained in the past about balancing the J-10 being too difficult. If you don't understand the beautiful dynamics that made 1.12 air to air missiles so balanced then you'll just have to trust that the PlaneWhore himself knows what he's talking about.

That completes my list and this little post. I know DICE does read these and other popular Battlefield 2 forums and I can only hope that they take notice and give the gamers what they want for a change. I am of the honest opinion that if DICE implemented the four easy changes above the quality of the gameplay would reach an all-time high. In fact I think if DICE included all of the above balance adjustments it would exceed the sum total of all the positive changes DICE has made throughout the extensive list of patches (minus the two new maps).

With Battlefield 2142 on the horizon and looking rather dissapointing (IMO) I'd really appreciate DICE taking the time and putting in the effort to make this game as excellent as possible till the next batch of amazing games rolls arounds.

                              Feedback appreciated and debate encouraged.
Some things I would like to see in the 1.5 patch.

                              A Couple of points.
                              1. The snipers to have Binoculars that can determine the distance of their opponent.
Hence to change the distance of the scope to match the opponents distance.
there you have it - a kill.

                              2. The supports can have a target designator and mortar to demolish their opponents.
