that's all we need to slow our games down and cause them to crash because of poorly written advertiser code, not to mention the poorly written and unnecessary dice/ea code to support advertising.

i wonder if i can take ad saying that their products suck. like we be playing bf2 and there would be a billboard saying ea sucks for dice games suck. they've already sold their soals for $$$ what a few bucks more to take in. i wonder what is the rate for an ad maybe ill buy one

There better not be 3rd party crap and advertising added to the game in anyway otherwise there is no way in hell im playing it or purchasing anything with EA on it again ever!

That like downloading those stupid programs that have advertising until you purchase then its removed, well EA I have purchased so **** ***.

Next thing they will do is say "Pay us a fiver and we`ll remove the advertising for you" **** ***!

I had no problem with EA at all before hearing about this, so if this is true then EA has lost a customer and money, and hopefully there are alot more people like me then they will lose a hell of a lot of customers = money!

Re: The reason 1.4 .is delayed??

1.4 was probably delayed because of BF2142 and not because of some mystery bug that nobody whom has the leaked version can seem to find. I've learned to distrust DICE after all the BS they've put the loyal Battlefield series fanbase through.

On the subject of BF2142 ads:

It's horsesh1t. They already have made/will make a fistful of cash off this game/series yet that doesn't seem to be adequate for EA/DICE. I mean it's absolutely fu#@ing ridiculous that they're working on junk like this and yet BF2142 has MORE CTD and server crash issues then the game they ripped the engine from (The original Battlefield 2). Yes I know it's a beta but fact is Battlefield 2 is not a beta and the game bugs have existed the entire duration of the game and remain unfixed.

We (the gamers and consumers) that support DICE and make their success possible get absolutely nothing of benefit from these garbage ads and the only scenario in which I'd accept these ads is if DICE took 100% of the revenue generated from them and put in to lowering the cost of the retail box and/or server rental costs. Not even to mention these dynamic ads actually hurt gamers because aside from being a distraction they are also just like any other texture in the game. They have to be stored in video memory and rendered by the video card and thus they reduce the overall performance of the game. Oh and because they are "dynamic" they also chew away at my valuable bandwidth and ping performance too.

I vow to never buy any product seen in a "dynamic Battlefield 2142 ad" even if it's a good product that they are advertising. That's assuming I buy the BF2142 at all because based on what I've seen thus far it has the same ridiculous bugs in BF2 that no doubt will not be fixed before release and result in a much less enjoyable gameplay experience. But will the dynamic ads be in before released? Of course! It's sad when a previously respected game developement company like DICE places a higher importance on a crap ad system then the core stability of the client/servers which directly impact the playability and enjoyment of the game in a serious way.

On the subject of BF2142 (or rather BF2 future combat expansion pack) the only real improvement they've made to the game so far is the ranking system, titan mode and the server browser (which is still lightyears behind the Valve Steam server browser). I mean how hard is it to add a "Keep attempting to join server option" so I don't have to sit at my desk click refresh like a retard? Everything else gameplay wise has taken a step BACK from the original BF2. Tons of horrible gameplay balance decisions, weak and virtually useless vehicles, much more newbie friendly weapons. BF2142 seems like the next logical step from IO mode because BF2142 is what I can only describe as the dumbing dumb of a previously great series. Again it's still beta but I get the sneaking suspicion none of this will change before the release.

As far as Im concerned, putting advertisments in a game I have paid for, is no worse than putting ads in a DVD movie. (during the movie)

EA have their money from the game being purchased. If this game was freeware, then they have every right to advertise to recoup some of the money spent in the development.

Absolute nonsense. A few static images are absolutely tiny in comparison to the bump mapped shaders found everywhere else in the game, and if they werent ads, they would be DICE's own posters (like DICE-cream) and would use up the same amount of texture memory. Oh and if your connection is slow enough that downloading a 50kb image uses up your bandwidth and affects your ping, then there is no way you could be enjoying Battlefield online.

Your post can basically be summed up like this: Some people don't like to take it up the rear and others don't mind (that'd be you). If I pay full price for a game (or a movie) and I see annoying and distracting advertisements thats unacceptable - bottom line.

Have you even played Battlefield 2142 beta? The game is absolutely plastered with these massive giant green billboards with a placeholder picture. I didn't count them but I'd estimate anywhere between 20-30 on the beta map. They are distracting enough as is but when they're covered with retarded sh1t like McDonalds "I'm lovin' it!" slogan they'll be even worse. Like it or not they will take up GPU memory and it will take bandwidth and not everyone has a decent computer and every little bit does count. A lot of the textures you see in the game are reused over and over again all over the map and if each of those 20-30 billboards had a unique ad then yes - that'd be a sizeable chunk of Vmem required and a decent chunk of bandwidth if you're downloading new ads during every map rotation. You can bet the resolution on these adds will be pretty sizeable because you think advertisers are going to pay thousands of dollars to see a horrible unreadable pixelated ad in a game? I don't think so.

If DICE made Battlefield 2142 free of charge and simply paid the bills with ad revenue then we wouldn't be having this discussion. I'd be perfectly OK looking at some worthless ads for products I'll never buy if it meant I recieved a free quality game out of the deal.

Yes I'm in the beta, but I'm not arguing whether ads in games are a good or bad thing. I'm merely stating that the technical part of your argument is nonsense. Don't use the fact that you are badly informed enough to think that 2142s hardware requirements are going to skyrocket if the billboards in the game are downloaded as opposed to static ones already in the game. Stick to the fact that paid games shouldn't contain adverts, just as paid DVDs shouldn't have ads. Keep your argument to the actual moral issue of creeping in advertising into a prevously advert-free product.

The fact is that most forms of entertainment contain adverts, whether its a commercial break in television, or product placement in movies and now video games, this is just the nature of commercialism today and yes I agree it sucks.

Hopefully 2142 ads will be done with some taste, think animated futuristic billboards like Blade Runner etc. with some actual creativity to them, but if they are contemporary, then yes driving about Verdun 150 years in the future looking at "Snakes on a Plane" posters will be utterly retarded.

And on a personal note, PlaneWhore, lay off the flaming, is it really necessary?

At least you understand this much. However the technical aspect *is* a very valid argument. I like to approach a debate from all angles and that includes exploring the much less likely or less severe aspects of a given situation.

The technical aspects do in fact add up in my estimation. Let me put it for you this way. Lets say worst case scenario each of the ads is 100k in size (could be bigger honestly but I think they'll be around 100k max for a decent resolution). Now lets say every single "dynamic" ad is different on every billboard. This makes sense from a business perspective because more billboards with unique advertisements = more revenue. Now let's say the map has 30 billboards which are all different. So that'd be a total of 3 megs worth of advertisements you have to load.

A lot of people are still stuck with 128meg video cards because they can't really afford anything better for the moment. When you're playing a high end game like Battlefield 2 (or in this case 2142) with 128 megs of Vmem it's more than playable given the Vmem isn't allocated poorly. It may not seem like much but when those 3 megs worth of ads load in to your Vmem rather than an enemy model/texture and your game has to swap out the other texture to load it in a firefight and thus you end up with unnecessary FPS/hitching problems. You can do a lot with 3 megs of Vmem believe it or not (in fact with a low res texture 3 megs could probably texture the entire map in a bland fashion).

Then the connection aspect. Believe it or not - not everyone has access to or can afford high-speed Internet. And believe it or not you CAN play a game like Battlefield 2 on dialup. Ping has very little to do with total bandwidth (though they do share a lose connection). You can have a great ping with dialup bandwidth as long as that bandwidth remains untapped. Those 100k adds suddenly turn in to massive ping problems, temporary game lag ups and/or slow load times. I remember back in the CS days before I had broadband I was able to get 90-100 pings in a 16-24 player CS game and it was perfectly playable. And who knows how long these adds stay cached or if they even bother caching at all past a single gaming session. I know if I was an advertiser instead of having 1 gimpy ad I'd want my dynamic content to be based off multiple different ads to make sure at least one manages to capture the players attention.

First you say it sucks and then you're willing to accept it? Submissive people like you are a big part of the reason advertisers are invading all aspects of our life. If you help the cause and stand up and take a no-compromise stance against BS like ingame ads then maybe the advertisers will think twice about signing up for dynamic ads that may upset potential customers. And really it doesn't matter how they are done because you'll always know why they are there. Speaking purely from a gameplay continuity standpoint a war torn futuristic landscape is no place for clean brand new looking billboards of any kind plastering the landscape. The very most I'd tolerate is a non-dynamic ad covered in frost or damaged in some manner due to the freaking futuristic war being waged all around it.

If EA wants to have ads streamed into the games, then the consumers should get something out of it, like lower prices, or cheaper servers because EA will make millions off of the advertising.
