One of your fans is hitting one of your wires.

Unless you've already opened it up and checked that.

And why do you let strangers put their hands on your hardware?

It is your hard drive and it will fail.

When the needle reaches a certain angle or place on the platter?

Could also be the PSU, i have heard of them beatboxing before.

Negative.. The HDD he installed is defective since it started after it was installed. We're trying to help you, if you want to dodge the issue then let it be.. We'll laugh when you're looking like your avy.

are you being serious by saying that or are you suggesting something? I can't tell.

@Minicoop. I was serious. The "techy" was probably a journalism major moonlighting as whatever passes for the 'geek squad' in the OP's neighborhood.

@OP, have you had a look at your computer with the panels off to find out where exactly the sound is coming from? If you haven't, I still think there's a possibility Mr. Fixit left a wire dangling in the path of a fan. Getting a new, busted hard drive isn't unheard of, but it is much rarer than ticking sounds caused by loose stuff rattling around, fans clicking on wires, etc.

                    Good luck.

Again, the ticking only happens sometimes, not all the time.
