    I had that problem, answer is to delete or rename the file 'registry.blob' in the steam folder then restart steam, you then get to log in again.

    if it fails again after that just restart it a third time.

    For those with strict firewall rules, remember to allow outgoing TCP traffic

    loc -> net 27030:27038

    Try that yet?
    Wow, thnks guys for all the support its really great, but unfortualty neither of these worked. It great to see some coporation on these forums instead of spam. As i have said before i went through all sorts of delays like others during the beta realease and after a day or two everything worked out, and i'm sure that in a few days this will all be worked out to.

    thnks

            Hehe, yea This cache thingy is horribly slow, as for the updating the platform it takes a bit of time cause like 654654376476 people are hitting the servers and as expected Valve was not ready for this kinda load but they knew it was coming, Most likely the game will loda after leaving it laone for a few hours, it'll freeze and stop responding os try not to do anything in the meantime(overnight job :/)

            Hope everyone gets their steam going, its just a matter or patience now

                  How are you connecting to the internet? Through router to cable modem and then to the net? If you have a cable/dsl modem, try hooking up directly into the modem, and see if that works. If it does, it means something with access in the router is screwed up and you have to open up some ports or allow full access to your computer from the net. If it doesn't, then there are much bigger problems. If that's the case my first guess would be the Steam install got f'd up (since it doesn't seem to be working right even for the people that it's working "right", if that makes any sense). You could try to uninstall it and then make sure it's removed from the Windows registry, and then try and reinstall it again. The key should be something along these lines:

                  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam

                  Run "regedit" from the "Run..." box and make sure the the Steam key is removed from the registry. Try reinstalling and see if that helps any. If not try uninstalling all Valve products (of course do the original HL and CS installs before doing Steam again). If all else fails just huddle into a corner and weep for a few hours. :)

                  So far I'm not too impressed with Steam. It's a great idea but it was very poorly executed. Obviously finding enough bandwidth to provide all the content is hard and very expensive. One thing they possibly could have done was at least give us an option to allow others to connect to our computer once we get content, so instead of just having a few content servers, we could easily have a few thousands T1/cable/dsl lines working together to distribute the data. Just my $.02. Now back to waiting for all the updates...

                          Since the download is so slow, why don't your people just shut off all your computers and go out and see a movie. When you come back I'll be done. Thank you!!

                              Alright, I got another problem... Whenever I try and update cs it says it's gonna take 320mb or whatever.. I click ok, and then it freezes. Happened to me like 6 times now.
