As the update says, a traditional update is being constructed and even though it's hard to imagine a 56k'er trying to update right now, I can't really fathom them ever updating because files are ALWAYS big. Actually, I remember playing on a 56k like 2 years ago and all I can say is get a better connection. Cable and DSL is available in many places and even options beyond 56k almost everywhere. Sorry, $9 a month to spend half my day trying to download a site doesn't make sense to me. Spend the $35 on Cable and tell me when you feel you haven't gotten your money's worth.

Hmm all excellent comments. But they do fail to take into account that not all the people attempting to download steam are based in countries where there are alternatives to dial-up. Currently in South Africa we have the somewhat unpleasant problem of a telecommunications monopoly. I earn around eight times the average salary in South Africa (which still isn't much :P) and adsl is not available in my neighbourhood (Cape Town, the second largest city in South Africa). So I use 128 kb ISDN, the only other alternative would be a 256 kb leased line (which costs roughly $3000 per month). Add to that the fact that most states in the USA have more international bandwidth than my whole country, and you'r left with an unpleasant situation trying to use steam.



I would have preferred them to have used the traditional distribution method of just letting everyone download the patches, that way the larger ISP here would host mirrors and the whole thing would have taken roughly 4 - 6 hours (depending on how big the thing actually is). I'm certainly not ungratefull for Valve's continual support of Counter-Strike, but I do think that they failed to take into account the sheer number of people who would download the updates.

i am trying installation and updating for the third time now..lookin for some better results...gona just go laser tagging or something instead...starting to get a little frustrated...if it doesnt work this time..im just gonna leave it til tomorrow...

Steam auto-grabds your CD Key from the registry if you already have half-life installed. I screwed up and had my friends my CD-Key in my registry when i installed steam because i didn't know it would take that one :) I just use his CD-Key when i play on one server that mine is banned from, but its ok, if he gets steam i'll just give him my key.

frubles my man! can ya help me out dude? I get the mssg that says "Cannot connect to Steam. Steam network might be donw or your internet conection is down" u know how to fix this or does anyone know?
