I'm seeing 1.2 as requiring more maneuvering skills. Before, clearing your tail was simple. All you had to do was make a couple turns and you could shake almost anyone. You could take your time with it since you didn't have to worry about a missile in your arse.

Now, you've got scant seconds to break before you die. You have to preform more complex maneuvers because you can't afford to screw up. You've got ONE chance and one chance ONLY. Thus you'd better know how ta make best use of it.

Well, I guess thats one thing to get that rabbits heart pumping.

Personally I didnt have a problem to keep the lockon on most of the pilots I have encountered, the only reason why I didnt use missiles then was because it was unreasonable to use them. Thats why Im so concerned about pilots survivability post-launch.

Agreed. While, with forethought, you can manage to stay below the ceiling at all times, IMO with the new A2A danger the pilot shouldn't have to worry about such a low ceiling all the time. 400ft/m more would be ideal, but I could settle for any padding to the current 800ft/m limit. And faster, but limited flares would be great too. :p

Good read, Wargimp. Kept me entertained at work. If people can't see how this information can be benificial to their piloting, pre or post patch... then let them be none the wiser... I say. By no means is it a defenitive BF2 pilots guide, but you never said that did ya. As stated, it's just useful info.

Re: Gift to Pilots stuggling to adapt.

I've done a little flying since the patch and I like the fact that everyone is vulnerable regardless of their skill; get's the blood pumping a little more. It's a new ball game and one that everyone can compete in.

I was starting to become a good pilot before the patch but I must say, I disliked the dogfighting side of things simply because I am not that great at lining up the other plane for a guns only kill. I also struggled to shake a very good J10 pilot when I was in the F35.

I am a better strategist so now that my joystick skills aren't required as much as my strategy skills, I think I will enjoy the challenge a little more. I expect to die more often now - but I'm strangely happy about that if it means the enemy will also be dying more often.

Planes get taken down more easily allowing for more people to share the flying experience. If I miss out on a jet, I'm happy to sit in a nearby AA knowing that I might actually hit something and that another jet should be respawning in a few minutes.

As for real-life flying advice filtering down into this game; there are only vague comparisons between RL and BF2. I'll take the advice from someone playing a lot of the game over anyone that has read a lot of real-life information.

Re: Gift to Pilots stuggling to adapt.

First off, Plane whore and Nastie may not be "respectable" forum posters but PH for one knows what he's talking about. Most of you are taking the arguement way out of context by bashing the posters and not the content.

Simply put, someone with 3 hours flight experience ingame can read all they want and still not be qualified to lend out advice. Sure the site is nice but none of that is going to help you if you don't have the flying skill to back it up. If you do have the skill to fly well you already know that most of that isn't really applicable because you've practiced enough to know what works in the context of the game.

PH is totally right though, Basically 60% of my kills before the patch were from the cannons. That was the FUN part of flying - shooting the guy down. AA is so lame now, I'm not being killed by good pilots I'm being killed by overpowered AA. I'm an above average player and with that in mind I realize they didn't even the playing feild -they leveled it completely.

I don't mind that fixed AA can kill me - that's actually an exciting dynamic to the game because I have to watch where I fly. The fact that I basically have mobile AA on my tail (anyone who can even TURN in a plane can be effective) is what dulls the experience.

It's akin to what the people in helicopters have to worry about - mobile AA. 8 rockets and less hitpoints means you ARE going down if you didn't get the shots off in time.

A lot of this is totally unrelated to the initial post but the topic has already slid away from it's initial intentions so I felt i may as well post my own views.

Those tactics posted in a link on page 1 are useless if plane is on your tail...stupid missles can fly unbelievable angles, and all what enemy pilot has to do is press the button.

Good lord. I love how some folks refuse to think or read before spouting off.

ALL escape maneuvers involve using your counter measures in conjunction with a breaking tactic. This has been stated repeatedly throughout the thread.

Dumping flares isn't enough. Maneuvers aren't enough. You have to use both or expect to be dead.

Wiping your tail was simple? Wrong. I guarantee you could never lose me pre or post patch, even if you flew up in to the stalling heights. I knew how to handle my throttle and rudder to turn fast and beat someone to a corner, make them sweat a little, and then when they've lost X amount of airspeed from a crappy turn or any number of things I'd K.O. them with a couple well timed missiles. No manuever is "complex" enough to throw off any one with reasonable amount of time in a cockpit, because really all you've got to do is emulate the movements of the plane in front of you and do it just as fast (or fastest).

Now in this patch only two things matter in a dogfight, who has the J-10, and who sees who first. Who spots who can either be based on luck, meaning you catch them from the side or rear at random, or based on your own situation awarenes by looking through all your cameras, but in any event that doesn't take skill and it is more of a positive habit with experienced pilots more than anything else.

I was playing earlier with the J-10 and basically anytime I'd get an F-35B or an F-18 on my tail I'd go in to the hardest constant turn possible and toss my flares at the right moment to dodge the first missile spam, and even if they kept going in circles with me I'd eventually be on their tail and they're guaranteed to be dead at that point. If they didn't get locked in to a "death spiral" with me I'd see them head out and follow behind them, and of course being in a J-10 they would not be able to out turn me once I caught up with them and they're guaranteed dead from the moment I saw them, and all because my plane can turn a bit faster. The J-10 has always been overpowered compared to the other planes but before the patch being in a J-10 didn't guarantee you success in a dogfight, but unfortunatly now it does.

Barring interference from the ground AA I'm virtually undefeatable in a dogfight while in a J-10, and really with minimal knowledge any one can be just as impossible to kill as me and lock any pilot in to an inescapable death spiral. But that isn't my idea of fun, and with air combat, and piloting in general dumbed down to such an extreme I'd much rather be on the ground sniping people with the PKM.

This is absolutely untrue. You simply cannot dodge a missile, I've verfied this and I'm 100% confident it is true, and the only way to survive a missile is to deploy your flares and cross your fingers. The only "escape manuever" that will work is turning in the direction of your friendly bases/airfield, slamming the afterburner and hoping you get out of range of the AA launcher.

The missile might miss you, but if it has it is only because it locked on to another target nearby. When I get missiles fired at me now I don't even bother turning, I just fly in a straight line with the afterburner because at least it'll get you some distances.

This assumes the stats are wholly representative of the gimp's entire experience. For all we know, he spends time on single player and/or unranked sites and/or only plays with a single account to accumulate those precious stats that, for some, are the sole measure of a person's worth.

Though my stats are nothing to brag about, they got a lot worse last night because I was letting a buddy of mine play as me. Then my gf tried a go at it. They put in about 3 hours of time "as me".

PW, you're a seriously boring guy, ya know that?

As pointed out, going by my stats I'm not a hot shot pilot. However, before I had NO problem breaking from a dogfight or staying in the air for extended periods of time. Stupidly long amounts, infact. Trees, buildings, and dirt were the things that killed me 'cause I'm overly tenatious/not a stats whore/get bored without any real threats and do stupid things.

I can only recall being shot down twice and both times it was due to doing numbskull stuff.

If you could possibly let go of your e-peepee for awhile and make and honest attempt to adapt, I'm sure you could find yourself dominating and enjoying the new found intensity of air combat.

If not, just go away. Yer not adding anything to this or any other discussion, other than giving people giggle fits.

I do spend time playing in unranked, locally hosted servers just flying planes and enjoying dogfighting. Well, I should say NOW we're enjoying it because before everyone would eventually get bored of the silly broken missiles and start fartin around doing other things.

The last few days, on the other hand, we've been havin a hoot.

As previously mentioned, I rarely bothered with planes in ranked servers because of the rampent stupidity that would go on around them.

I don't see any valid arguments in anything he's posted. All he does is refer to his overblown ego and his elite skills that are questionable at best. Questionable not in that he doesn't know what he's talking about, but questionable as to whether or not there's much real skill involved. I have get to see him post anything that shows him going up against a real threat. I've seen him drop in on the tails of oblivious pilots that aren't even aware that planes could shoot you down and him blowing the fark outta things on the ground.

Further, while I'm seeing other pilots adapting and enjoying the new challange, he simply refuses to contribute or even consiter any discussion on the new system other than to pout and whine like a spoiled brat.

You, on the otherhand, are doing a much better job. It's obvious that you're less than pleased with the new system, but you've contibuted to this thread and asked some very valid questions. Apparently you're willing to adapt... even if you aren't thrilled to be forced to do so.
Good for ya. That's worth respect points.

I specifically said that escape maneuvers rely on the use of countermeasures/flares. No, you can't dodge a missile any more than a grunt can dodge a sniper bullet. What you CAN do is make yourself harder to lock up (don't let people get on your tail in the first place) and if you hear that warning, understand that you've got seconds to live unless you do something drastic. Flare, break, maneuver.

                                Give it a shot.

And lemme be clear here... I'd be more than happy to see you come back with a fraps vid of you turnin and burnin and gettin those kills. I'll be the first to congradulate you if I saw an honest effort on your part rather than endless tyrades.
