Gift to Pilots stuggling to adapt.

Since the changes to Anti-air missiles came into effect via 1.2, lots of former elite pilots seem to be having a lot of trouble deal with the change for what was effectivly a WWII enviroment to what's now a more accurate modern day theater.

[Ahem. I'm not suggesting that BF2 is "realistic". The scale is way to close to be conistered a simulation. However, the basics of modern air combat are still present]

The skill of air combat hasn't been removed... it's been moved. It's no longer about who's got the best framerates/twitch skills. It's about thinking and your knowlage of how modern combat works.

The number one thing to remember now is that if someone gets tone on you and you don't have flares, you've messed up and you're likely to die for it. Intensity has been ramped WAY up. The importance of getting in on your enemy and taking him out fast cannot be underestimated. The skill is now in your manuevers that keep your tail clear while allowing you to drop in on the enemy.

I could wax poetic on the subject for pages and pages (I'm a modern air combat buff), but instead I found ya a great link that covers it all:

Check it out. Lots to read there, but if you can grasp the basics it will help lots.

Remember that scale is reduced and in turn, acceptable firing angles are looser.

Yes, yes. Feel free to flame and groan and growl rather than adapting and learning. It only means I'll get ta shoot down more out-of-date, has been pilots. I don't got a problem with that.

Very cool. I've just started flying more as a result of the new patch (hooray for having a chance) so this should help me out. Thanks.

I totally agree. Battle Field 2 has now more realistic air combat. You have a 7/10 chance of hitting your enemy. Realism is there. Now you can't just fly over every stinger and not have to worry. Think smart people, fly the edges or even high to get a drop on the enemy. Say you do get lured into a stinger's tone, drop, drop and drop, get below or obstruct his LOF. And as for enemy jets think smart. And juke the right manuevers. But if ur listening to what i said earlier you won't have any problem with your six.

          Did I make that claim?
          Nope.
I said I'm a modern air to air buff. This means I read about the subject. I gain knowladge, think about what I've learned and am willing to adapt it to what I need it for.

Yup, my KDR in planes is not impressive in the slightest. However, almost every kill I've made has been air to air. Both pre-1.2 and post. I've also spent hours playing in unranked servers with buddies just doing Air to air. Whoring the planes for big scores never interested me. Getting some good air ta air action did... and it sucked before (as in it was stupidly WWII).

Anyway, getting a flame from Nexar because you challange people to think is about as unexpected as the sun rising in the morning.

Im not struggling to adapt this is how Ive been playing almost 4 years now...The info you provide is helpful but hard to apply alot of it as we are basically flying 1000mph in a small box or rectangle.

I would love to see a more somewhat sim like flight in BF2,but I think we need a higher ceiling and the full scale of the map to really have it with that feel.I like how the new ground AA and more intense a2a combat has basically raised the level of flight in BF2 back to how it was in 42 (if you were good) but theres still several issues...

              Granted.
It ain't perfect and flying in BF games will never be anything like a good sim.

Well I was looking for a good modern guide to read on,I am interested in it....I admit I love the feel of the new fight I just think there should be at least something more than 1 set of possibly working flares in your favor...Then its a BF Dogfight :)

But seriously thanks for the guide!!

                  2 hours total time.....40 kills / 49 deaths

Ah yes... This was a totally unexpected flame.

Read the above responce to your bum chum, Nexar. It applies to you're rather pathetic attempt at a flame too.

You really gotta get over you're E-peepee, but let me guess... You Can't Counter That either.

Wow, someone trying to help people out and he gets spit on. This must be the Web. I think the website is cool, especially if you want to upgrade from BF2 to a more serious air combat simulation.

I dont see what people's problem is. Gimpy posted a site that might help people who are struggling with countering the improved missiles. He never claimed to be a good pilot, never claimed to have a lot of experience in the air. Perhaps he doesnt like standing around like a stoned crow waiting for a jet to spawn once in a while.......

I dont understand why ppl like nastie have to have a shot at someone trying to help the community....?

Even if Wargimp stats looks crappy when it comes to flying (as are mine...) it does not mean his piece of advice is a clueless piece of BS. Far from it. Wargimp, thanks for the link.

It's no suprise coming from a guy who's entire ego seems to be centered around is "l33t" BF2 skills (despite the fact that he's had his pressious stats reset... and is apparently up for another round of spanking). Dude reacts with extreme hostility to anything that might point towards the fact that all the BF2 skills in the world still doesn't make you cool.

Edit: Aw, shucks guys. Yer welcome. Just trying to contribute. I went from laughing my arse off at pilots freaking out about the new AAMs to being sympathetic to their plight. The new system is a hell of a change and it's not suprising that some folks are less than thrilled by it. I suspect that it's because I never bothered with planes much before 1.2 that I was able to adapt perty quickly. I didn't expect to be able to fly for a whole round without being shot down, so it's not as shocking to get blown outta the sky.

Re: Gift to Pilots stuggling to adapt.

Sorry but if someone thinks reading that is gona make them better at bf2 air combat, I laugh.

I stand by my thesis that the new A2A is a total joke.
                              1) Air combat is now hide and seek.
                              2) Missiles are pretty much 100% death, 50% even with flares.
                              3) Missiles do ridiculous things like zig zag in the air and still hit their target
                              4) There is no more skill in Air combat. Weave, turn, slow down, the new missiles will hit you still.

Sorry but I dont like being shot down by a guy who 2 seconds later crashes in the ground.
