Re: 1.2 Death of Attack Helis

Im a chopper whore. I think the attack chopper received a devastating nerf. Im not going to explain why anymore because Ive already done it on forums that matter and EA will see. But I will say this.

Prepatch: Surviving in a attack chopper - medium difficulty / Killing a attack chopper - medium difficulty.

v1.2 Patch: Surviving in a attack chopper - Hard / Killing a attack chopper - very easy

Some other interesting facts: It now takes 6 seconds for a .50 CAL to blow up a attack chopper (tested). AA missiles from IGLA's have almost 100% accuracy and 75% of the time ignores flares. AA Tanks are now uber ( I think the AA Tanks needed some love, but now they got too much love with the new improved AA. There guns were weak and the reduced armor really fixed that because now they do good dmg)

P.S. I have over 100 hours in the attack chopper and I have the Veterans Helicoptor badge so I know wtf im talking about.

You people sayin it used to take teamwork to take down airplanes are hypocrites.

Aircraft could dominate an entire map before the patch teamwork or not. Now your whining bout dying every 5mins?? How bout you use some of your teamwork and have a sniper take out the guy on the stationary AA. For the mobile AA use your 'teamwork' to have someone call it out then you make a quick strike on it.

Finally after 3.5 years we have balanced aircraft.

I agree you were a chopper whore, good for you....what about saying you were a good pilot? maybe you left that out because you werent good, you just never really had to worry about ground threats, so it seemed, at least to you, that you were good.

Now imagine this, instead of looking for ground troops to rape, you take a gander at the AA stinger sites first, you know, the spot where the guy sits in the stationary places that you ignored from the beginning of the game, have your gunner TV guide those spots first, then go in to rape....bottom line is GOOD pilot/gunners dont mind the challenge of the patch, read around they are speaking out. Point farmers, such as yourself, are upset cause you just cant cruise over AA sites anymore like you did pre 1.2

I still own in the chopper, I just die a little more frequently. If you have a good gunner on voip owning a map isn't all that difficult as long as you are a skilled pilot. Sure, the AA will go after your flares and actually turn around and hit you half the time, 50's rip you apart, and you don't want to run headlong into a tank, but ownage is still possible.

                Perspective from a Cobra Victim

I tried out the mobile ground aa last night for the first time since the patch and started taking down cobras right away. That went on until they went low. I'm talking "skids across my vehicle top" low. They adapted and overcame. Even though I moved around a lot they would come in on me quickly from around obstructions. Then the pilot would hover blowing flares while his gunner was locking me up with a TV Missile. I ran my mini guns on them while waiting for the flares to clear but the TV missile was always on me before I could bring any critical damage on the Cobra.

I haven't flown cobras yet as I am still practicing on single players maps on my own. Now with the low and fast attack requirements I see my training program taking a tad bit longer. To whoever it was that was doing the superb flying last night and handing me my @ss: Good for you, well done.

Sorry, simply not true. I don't fly, I don't ride helos, I don't fight helos, except rarely. But objectively speaking, I would watch a train of Apaches come in, blow the crap out of the AA posts in Ghost Town, turn around and dispatch the AA vehicle trying to score hits, and then proceed to hover and rape anything and everything in sight.

The single most common cause of death for those helo crews was pilot error: they'd crash into a building. Defensive action was so rarely effective that it might as well be random in its effect.

I think, without insult, that you've overstated the problem. Since the new patch, I've watched lots of helos crash and burn, but I've also seen some crews move cleverly and take out the AA and then wreak havoc.

I think this new patch separates the truly good pilots from those who THOUGHT they were good, but who were actually prospering because of the miserably poor AA performance.

I think that the changes are forcing helo pilots to fly more realistically. It's called nap of the earth and something that wasn't needed before because there was no big AA threat. Now you have to use buildings, hills, trees and whatever else you can find to obscure with so you don't get locked up or shot. Gunners have to be quick and accurate with the missiles now or if you have something spotted you can sit behind a hill, tip back and fire a hellfire towards the target and let teh gunner guide it in. Gone are the days of no skill pilots and gunners racking up kills.

I for one am glad to see the challenge. I only wish the transport helo's were a bit more manueverable as it's hard as hell to fly a blackhawk the proper way now.

Come on guys that used to be so lame. A helo just hovering there with no worries...
That summed it up best for me. Pre 1.2 the helos had no worries. They would die "once in a while". Now they die often.

There is this unwritten expectation that they have a "right" to live longer than poor old infantry folk. It is that expectation that I find faulty. It smells like elitism (no pun intended). I've actually seen suggestions that if we infantry wanted to stay alive, we should "stay out of the way" of helos, as if we are guests on the battlefield. Quantity-wise, we are the battlefield.

With 1.2, now we all die.

That's like arguing that if you run into 5 enemies and they all start shooting at you, you should be able to dolphin dive your way to safety, cause anything else is unfair to you.

Funny, but true. I feel bad for the Capt.

Come on Cap...put in some hours rethinking everything. Throw out pre-existing assumptions and the old rules. Get back on that horse and finesse your flight plan. It really is a better (though not perfect) situation now. Master that bad boy. Own that helo. You'll be one of the few. I'm sure you will do it. Best wishes.

Just gonna add that I don't think its the end of helis, I think its the end of the chopper whores who had an easy time just raping the hell outta bases, now you need more skill, I use the attack helis alot mostly pilot and I have rarely been killed my AA/stingers even with the new patch, with the limited missiles your better having your gunner take out the person on the Stinger or IGLA.

I played Wake Island yesterday and my gunner had 38/2 and Sharqi today and gunner had 32/6, 2 of the deaths were from the Stinger, others where fighting other helis, just goes to show you need to put a little more effort into using the attack helis.

k, im not posting to get flammed at, but i love to use the chopper and yes i will say with pride that i am a chopper whore, but i love to fly its fun, i dont gt many kills its mostly my gunner becuase i set them up, but when i dled this new patch the chopper started to slide down my list of favorite vehicles for the game. I think they should have left the hit points of the chopper alone and just make the tank round more strong becuase a tank will take anything else out with 1 round anyways so why not make it stonger and just go back to having the original hit points on a chopper.
