Honour is something of beauty. Pulling out your knife when being charged by another knife is something to be admired- Rather than blowing him away with an m203. Why do we play games, dear? To have fun, that's why. It's tons more fun to let your opponent get up or face him toe to toe rather than from behind. Not only is it more gratifying if you still win, but it's usually well respected and can earn you some pretty cool friends. It isn't war. It is not a matter of life and death. It's a GAME. I could go ahead and write an article on how lowly I think of this scum fxck and his style, use a couple valid points that anyone will agree with, and then persuade the ignorant to hide behind some big words and maybe even throw in some stupid scientific jargon to make you think 'hey, I don't know it all!'
Then again, I guess my argument is null when I mention that everyone has their own fun in different ways.. It's human nature to dominate, and unless we all become samurais or something the ignorant will always march on. I'm sure it's fun to repeatedly bomb people from up in the sky in a jet while you're untouchable or wipe people out with an instant-kill grenade launcher.
Guess some people play to win, and that gives them a boner. That's really sad, though.. Still, there's light in pandora's box because quite a few of you brought up some good points. Kudos.
Well said bro, I agree 100%, I went to cut your post down but couldn't agree more and left it as it says!
Its not whether you win or lose its how you play the game...
since we're talking about BF2, it's not noobs we hate. It's the idiots that are good, played a lot and know what to do, that just play for themselves or just don't care.
Then there's the retard who is new to the game, and trying to fly a helo or jet, or drive armor on a server where there are experienced and good players that can use them. But the tards always get them, then they complain that the other team has stolen them or is in their main raping them.
That's what single player, local server, unranked and other servers are for. DON'T LEARN ONLINE! practice offline until you are decent, then move to online play to get better.
i had a wicked round last night actually. I was commnder on Mashtuur City hiding behind our base in one of the corners.
I had C4'd the flag, but when the enemy came they shot my so i respawned ran to my kits picked it back up shot two of them came round the opther side of the building and there was 3 of them lying down next too the flag so i switched too the detonator and boom! 3 blokes went flying it was awesome :)
So you either play 4 fun or to win? I'll rather take both. If U don't like my tactics whine to someone who cares. As far as I'm concerned it's no cheating, no statpadding and so on. But when it comes to winning a map it's free for all.
Also can't remember what movie it was there was a handy tip: "If a guy comes at you, you pull out a knife. If he pulls out a knife, you pull out a gun." Call me lame if U like, you're dead:p
I liked the article in that I think it does apply well to competition. Perhaps the main issue here is that a typical BF2 server is comprised of a range of players, all with different attitudes. Some are playing to win no matter what; some are playing purely to have fun and regard winning as a nice bonus; and some are playing to win but only if they can do so whilst playing in accordance with "the rules."
There's no point arguing over how the game should be played because, unlike serious competition (where the focus is obviously to win), people play BF2 on-line for a variety reasons.
I could definitely relate to what the author was trying to say, though. When I was in high school, there was a state-wide Streetfighter II competition for which players had to register by phone. I registered pretty late and so missed out on receiving the "competition rules" letter that the organisers apparently sent out after each phone registration. Only when I arrived on the day of the competition did I discover that "throws" had been completely banned along with hitting people while they were dazed (with the little birds flying around their head). My playing style had to be completely overhauled right then and there. Not an easy thing to do ...
I made the Top 8 out of something like 3000+ competitors but I was confident I could have won that competition if they'd not introduced those two ridiculous rules. For Streetfighter II, they were certainly the kind of rules concocted by inept players who, rather than strive to improve, honestly believe that the game should be rid of anything that exposes them as inferior. Honestly, it was akin to having a Battlefield 2 tournament and declaring to the competitors "you're not allowed to shoot players unless they're facing you ... because that's cheap." Those 'rules of engagement' for the SFII competition were certainly welcomed by the 'scrubs' but definitely not by those who took full advantage of the game's moves and knew how to counter players of equal calibre.
The very BEST fights I had during that competition were with the other finalists in between the proper rounds. As in, during our free time. We played the game as it was meant to be played and absolutely loved competing with one another; because in the absence of arbitrary rules concocted by scrubs, we were forced to reach very deep and get the very best out of ourselves to win. Those victories were the sweetest by far and the fights were amazing.
I do know where the author is coming from ... but I agree with everyone on this thread that the article is not easily applied to Battlefield 2.
Personally, I couldn't care less if people are spawn-camping, dominating in a jet, bunny hopping or prone-jumping. I still have fun and always look upon so-called "cheap" tactics as an extra challenge to overcome. I'd MUCH rather compete against those who use every tactic available to them than players who spend the whole round crying to everyone on the server, "Hey, you're not allowed to do that! You're not allowed to do this ..." "LAME!" "NOOB TUBE!" "SPAWN CAMPERS!"
There are very effective tactics and strategies lots of us never use purely because we know they'll be deemed cheap ... and I think that does slow the rate at which we can all improve our tactics and abilities.
Got to agree with the article here. Unless something is so badly coded it becomes unstoppable (such as Blackhawks pre 1.03) the majority of people have problems with certain key ways of playing the game and label them as lame/noobish etc.
The problem with BF2 is that now the community has so many people with their own sense of right and wrong in their head BASED UPON THE FACT THEY HAVEN'T THOUGHT HOW TO COUNTER PARTICULAR TACTICS. Take the following example...
Many people had difficulty dealing with tanks, especially on some of the more open maps where cover for the AT class was sparse. The response to these "tank whores" aka people skilled at using tanks, nothing more, was to develop the jihad jeep. As a result, the dominance of tanks was reduced somewhat but with the unfortunate side effect of people having trouble countering the jihad jeep. Hence J-Jeeping is now considered "lame", as the tactics to counter it effectively have yet to surface.
"Noob tubing" is similar. Granted, it's a failing of the game in that the splash damage does not affect the firer but until this is fixed it's a somewhat limited problem (only affecting you in CQB) and if we are all honest if a guy with a grenade launcher misses then his target will get an easy kill shortly afterwards.
As a final example, take the attacking of uncappable CPs using Kubra Dam and any aircraft carrier as an example. Kubra Dam - if the MEC people can fight the USMC back all the way to their spawn and prevent any breakout then they have done incredibly well. Why ban such a display of either skill or teamwork? Also, if the enemy commander camps in the spawn to direct troops then why shouldn't a spec op on a raid be guided in to kill him and help his team? Banning uncappable spawn attacks is ironic in that it is more "lame" than the "problem" it's trying to correct, in that it gives the team with the uncappable spawn an unfair advantage. Likewise with carriers. If your team are struggling against competent pilots, you have a couple of solutions. Either fly against them yourself, concentrate on AA or better still, interdict them when they are at their most vulnerable - on the carrier. It's a counter to the very effective tactic of bombing the sh1t out of people.
The issue of lamers/whores etc. is completely depressing. People have found certain tactics that work really well. Others, as the article says, cannot/will not think their way around these and therefore claim it's unfair.
To be honest I thought more people would have realised this to be true. If you keep clinging to your beliefs that the rules of sportsmanship you have created for BF2 IN YOUR OWN HEAD are true, you will always come off worse against people playing the game and doing things you won't do. You will lose, then feel worse because you can't understand how someone can't think the same way as you about the particular tactic.
Trust me, play their game, learn some new tactics and you will improve as a player and have more fun. Faced with a "noob tuber" (*sigh*)? - stay out of narrow corridors, throw more grenades aroudn corners, use more vehicles or simply aim more accurately.
Faced with lots of armour? Grab a jeep and strap C4 to it.
Faced with jihad jeeps? Get those landmines out.
You're playing with one arm behind your back and you don't need to.
It says that 'scrubs' will always say certain moves are cheap and wont want to use them... ...thats crap. Some new players can be MORE likely to use 'cheap' moves to win and MANY experienced players are more likely to define certain things as cheap.
Secondly, he says scrubs say things like "x is cheap"...that doesnt mean that people who say "x is cheap" are scrubs.
Some people (myself included) dont actually play to win, hard as that is to comprehend for alot of people.
Besides the fact that the writer's philosophy is totally out of date. Games like BF2 arent about a direct victory...so the logic breaks down.
I'm with you, Ind1go. Truly, I'd rather play on a "no rules" server with people like you and MooJuice than any server burdened with arbitrary rules and all the players who cling to those rules because they can't or won't develop effective counter-strategies ... or else can't have "fun" unless everyone adheres to their ideas re: proper conduct.
Do people really want servers inundated with players whose one and only defence against a tank is to yell, "TANK WHORE!" or do they want to play against people inventive enough to come up with ideas like the Jihad Jeep?
Personally, I find that I have fun no matter what. For example, a few weeks ago, I was playing against TBI|Starscream and, as MooJuice would know, Starscream has no qualms using tactics like prone-jumping because he's competitive and happy to use tactics that can give him an edge. Any time I killed him, it was so much more satisfying because of those tactics.
For me, some of the most fun there is to be had in the game is triumphing over the players who use what others deem "cheap" tactics. Often when I kill a bunny-hopping enthusiast, I'll even lower myself to taunt them for not being able to dodge my bullets. Or I'll spend a lot of time as an anti-tanker and consistently go after someone who can't stand to spend one minute outside their precious armour.
and if you werent meant to be able to swap sides and get ppl kicked for TKing by running into their fire and vehicles and chasing their nades you wouldnt be allowed to do that either. its in the game so it must be ok.
I suppose it must be. Then again, the system in place for dealing with this is auto-kick at a certain minus score, so really it's a case of tollerence to stupidity. Once the player steps over the line, minus X points, the game kicks him. Also, vote kick is there in-game, but ultimately it is a flawed system.
Ive skimmed through alot of this thread because most of it is just bitching you can not compare Streetfighter to BF2 . If you do your a fool i can understand were the threads coming from but BF2 has multiple ways of winning and multiple awards. Streetfighter is just who is the last man standing thats it and there isnt a cheap tactick in Streetfighter its all legit . Now if your playing to actualy win the ROUND your going to be playing completely different to someone trying to increase there stats. Also someone playing for a Medal or a badge is going to play completely different .
As ive just stated there are multiple ways of playing BF2 and depending on the way your playing depends on your persepective of the game and how you perceave when something is cheap. Stat padding is a way of increasing your stats and possibly gaining a top 10 rank but to actualy do that is ******** and goes against everything the games stands for. So am i a scrub for disagreing with that tactick ? am i feckers likes ill pwan 9/10 stat padders everytime i see them as i can play this game unlike them.
Moojuice heres a question directly aimed at you is it cheap for someone playing wake island to TK to get the j10 to only suicide into a fully loaded BH.
Once you takeaway the TK penalty and suicide penalty hes still got a nice score.???
A few people said the article is about competition - but they're still missing the point I think. This article is years old, it's written by someone who plays for MONEY. Not just regular online competition that means nothing. (except bruised e-peens).
The best example I can think of is counter-strike. Pubs (like every server in BF2) means absolutely nothing. You think you're in a competition.. but you're not. You're playing for fun. Those who take it "seriously".. aren't. If you're in a clan match you're playing to win. If you're in a clan match and you have the opportunity to kill someone FAST with the m203 (awp) or **** around with blasting away and the chance they'll also kill you because it's the "honorable" thing to do.. then you're not playing to win that competition.
The article is 100% correct when you look at it from the competitive point of view. I'm not involved in the competitive side of BF - 80% of the community isn't either - but if I was, you best believe I'd do nothing in PUBS that mean nothing (the rank servers that people take "seriously") and use the m203.
Play to win is what the article is saying.. when you're competiting.. or practicing because you DO compete.
Did the Chicago Bulls of the mid-90's sit Jordan because it just wasn't fair that he was better than everyone else? (the gun is better than that gun over there)
The Point of Playing for fun (which i do) is NOT that you mustn't play to win. if you do so, even bending the rules, it's ok for me. the point of playing for fun is actually PLAYING TO HAVE FUN.
I remember staring at a heli hovering over a base and totally destroying it in a couple of minutes. that was a hell of a show. even if i didn't score a point in the meantime
Playing the COD multiplayer (i really did kick ass sometimes as a sniper) i found myself in the following situation a couple of times: every player of a team take positions in circle and then make the same moves like jumping, leaning etc. that ended when the opposite team showed us they didn't like dancing.
anyway, i don't like over-competitive people. seems to me that they need to compensate something they miss.
wounder how they would fly a chopa in the harder controls of say desert combat
Oh how i wish for those handling characteristics. Not to brag, but i was a good helo pilot in DC. But with BF2, it's just not the same. Some ways it's a lot easier, some a lot harder/different.
