He has some perfectly valid points which is witnessed in a lot of games. I mean, Halo 1 was dubbed a very imbalanced game by tyros (politically correct term for n00bs) because of the three headshot kill with pistol. But if he wants to gain more supporters, he has got to stop adding random examples to it.

The British redcoats were one of the best armies in the world at that time, a mile long line two deep of soldiers advancing at you is a fearsome sight. A musket volley is devasting only when you're lined up like that because muskets are inaccurate. The advancing in a line strategy was a perfectly legit strategy back then because they couldn't do anything else.

Here's another thing that totally just made him look like a retard:

Overall, some of his points are totally retarded though. If he applies it to BF2, he contradicts himself by saying that they ban the Unlockable characters in street fighter because they are too cheap. In BF2, if they camp an uncappable base, wouldn't that be so cheap that it's impossible to win for the other team so that it should be banned? (Not saying I'm against camping)

If you win to play, the article is ok, but the definition "scrub" is a itself a grey area. And as someone already said, what about playing for "fun"? "Fun" can be all kinds of things, and I wouldnt bother to change somebodies opinion about whats "fun", but what i find "fun" is my own.
Of course i growl when someone slaps me in the face with a 40mm grenade point blank, but seeing as there are already 10000 posts about the subject i dont bother. Should this particular thing be adressed its ok with me, but in the meantime i live with it.

by the way, REAL srubs play PRMM. >:)

I think that it's a little harder to apply that article to online PC games, since there is an expectation that everything perceived as "cheap" or "lame" may not have been intended by the designers.

Game mechanics get patched all the time these days. Because of the "patching precedent", players are more inclined to complain first and adapt later.

If the designer behind a given game came forward and said, "I know it is hard to defeat, but the jets and their various uses are well within the game balance as I've envisioned it," then I think people would shut up and learn to deal with it - either by learning to defeat it, avoiding it by playing non-jet maps, or not playing the game altogether.

I got board of his article about half way in. My parents owned an arcade so I played Street Fighter to win. And I always won. But I can't agree with him on the definition of cheap. All the games have moves and especially characters that are cheap. I can counter all those cheap moves usually by doing them back. But they are still cheap. A better definition would be exploit of the broken game.

I dont play to win, i play to have fun and will not use tactics that are "cheap" in my eyes.

Like, i will not shoot some-one trying to knife fight with me, thats cheap, i take out my own knife and have some fun, even tho chances are much higher that i will loose. I dont care.

So... here goes my opinion on it (again).

He's basicly right on every aspect except a single very important issue of semantics. I don't agree with his use of the term "good" player.

What he means is a competitive player. Someone to whom winning is the most important factor of the game.

Don't get me wrong... I like to win. However, having fun is even more important. If there's a simple, basic pattern that could see me win every time, I'd get bored and go do something else. If I'm not having fun, winning doesn't matter.

Does this automaticly mean I'm not a "good player"?
No.

It means that I have a life beyond my games and thus, winning isn't everything.

This thread is for all whores alike to rejoice and agree with and justify their weakness.

Honour is something of beauty. Pulling out your knife when being charged by another knife is something to be admired- Rather than blowing him away with an m203. Why do we play games, dear? To have fun, that's why. It's tons more fun to let your opponent get up or face him toe to toe rather than from behind. Not only is it more gratifying if you still win, but it's usually well respected and can earn you some pretty cool friends. It isn't war. It is not a matter of life and death. It's a GAME. I could go ahead and write an article on how lowly I think of this scum fxck and his style, use a couple valid points that anyone will agree with, and then persuade the ignorant to hide behind some big words and maybe even throw in some stupid scientific jargon to make you think 'hey, I don't know it all!'

Then again, I guess my argument is null when I mention that everyone has their own fun in different ways.. It's human nature to dominate, and unless we all become samurais or something the ignorant will always march on. I'm sure it's fun to repeatedly bomb people from up in the sky in a jet while you're untouchable or wipe people out with an instant-kill grenade launcher.

Guess some people play to win, and that gives them a boner. That's really sad, though.. Still, there's light in pandora's box because quite a few of you brought up some good points. Kudos.
