Re: A Chopper Pilot’s Guide to being a good gunner

@Strega - great guide...finally a pilot who knows what us gunners (and pilot in training) want...

I'm not sure what happened between page 1 and now...don't feel like sifting thru all the rubbish...but Strega, I think I read the guide the way you intended it...and I wish there were more pilots like you...

As a gunner...I hate when pilots...

-fly upside down...looks kind of cool...but I don't think helo's were meant to do it...and can result in puke in the cockpit.

-let loose with a barrage of missiles...all of which miss...and never give me the chance to use my "one shot - one kill" TV missile.

-fly around with the nose so far up in the air I get to see the bright blue sky but no ground targets.

-jink left and right so much...and then complain when I can't hit the target with my gun.

-pass up a target or hover over it...just keeping it far enough where my gun can't swivel and hit it...I know it swivels pretty far left to right...but it doesn't do a 360.

-listen to the missile alarm...but never pop a flare or do any kind of evasive maneuver...just sit and hover...(maybe this pilot thinks if they don't move they're invisible, not sure)

-fly over artillery...pretty much self explanatory.

P.S. Also glad to hear that you recommend using the TV missile at other aircraft...for awhile...I thought I was just being stupid doing this but it's quite nice to take out a fat blackhawk full of flag cappers this way...

Re: A Chopper Pilot’s Guide to being a good gunner

i had to register just to say this so yall should feel special. my views on gunners is completly a 180 from what other dood said and i know you all hate me for it but ohwell. i see a gunner as a guy whos there to kill stuff thats difficult for me to kill and i'm there to keep us alive and kill everything thats easy for me to drop. after piloting the copter so much i've got it down pretty well and it really irritates me when i'm swooping down on a tank/apc, whatever already firing, with missles already hitting and the gunner waits for me to get right above the target and lets the tv go... getting the kills, wasting amo, damaging us, blinding me (sometimes leading to crashes) and all around ****ing me off. you should realize that if the missles are already on their way to the target that they are going to hit, i havnt seen many pilots that just spray with the helo. doing that just leads to the gunner not getting as many chances to kill anything at all. i mean the pilot does ALL of the work in the chopper, the gunner just sits there. the pilot shouldnt be looked at as a taxi driver for a guy with a one shot one kill missle. if thats what you want to be then ok but in the time it takes the gunner to get a few tv missle shots off you COULD have already taken out your target and then some. now this sounds like i'm a point whore and yes i am... somewhat. i have no problem with hovering around areas letting the gunner chain gun whatever he wants while i dodge crap flying at me, its alot easier for him to shoot individual people than it is for me. so yeah i do share, but quit wasting my time and amo when i feel like taking a few shots and having a few kills of my own. theres plenty for both of us so you dont need to have it all. when ya share its more likley we will have 120 point games instead of 30 because i got irritated and decided to practice my flyin skillz... instead of actually playing.

flame on! i can take it

I love both flying and gunning but you said it all Strega. Right from the beggining witht the noobs spoiling my little surprise I literally want to rip eyeballs out.

In anycase I sypathize with noobs but their comes a point where you either make an effort to learn it and become proficient or stay the hell off of the chopper.

Would love to fly with ya but I guess I will have to settle for a former noob who read your guide

Re: A Chopper Pilot’s Guide to being a good gunner

STREGA: Everyone should be REQUIRED to read this before getting in the gunner seat. Great guide.. I laughed my ass off... Although, I do agree with GOTMILKs points too.. but as long as we are BOTH doing good, I still get points off the gunners kills, so I don't mind if they take my armor kills.

I will say that the most important point that EITHER of you made is:

-THE GUNNER IS THERE TO TAKE OUT STUFF THAT IS HARD FOR THE PILOT TO HIT. ie: stingers/Tows... INFY.... ANYTHING THAT IS NEAR WHILE HOVERING TO CAP FLAGS... including EMPTY VEHICLES that could soon become occupied...

Anyone know why it is that I -always- see all sorts of targets on the ground... I never miss seeing infy... but the gunner always seems to be looking the wrong way.. grrr.. even when I call the guy out... nothin... I have to hit em with a rocket.

I read this 4 times, and still have no friggin clue what you are trying to say. What about my post didn't you agree with? From what I gather from reading your post, you're a mediocre pilot that is more worried about getting points than actually doing your job, killing armor. It doesn't matter how you kill the armor, as long as it's dead, your team benefits from it.

I know when I'm flying with a good gunner, cuz I don't get many kills. I'm happy with that.

what i dont agree with is relying on the gunner so much when its so simple to do it yourself. sure the tv is a one shot one kill thing but to a pilot it should be similar, one swoop one kill... atleast one kill, once you figure out how many missles it takes to take out certain things you can have multiple armor kills very quickly, thus helping out your team even more. i mean whats more helpful? taking out 2 tanks and an apc (possible to do with the 14 rockets provided before reloading) in one pass or positioning, letting the gunner fire, getting one... and repeat? its ok to rely on the gunner but i dont see how you can hover so long, giving them multiple chances on a target when theres so much out there that locks on and the fact that people are getting pretty good with anti tank missles. i'm usually afraid and reluctant to stop moving and hover in any map i play.

give yourself a chance at taking out armor yourself and i'm sure you will end up agreeing with me

You're not taking out 2 tanks and an apc in one pass. Not consistently anyway.

I do rely on the gunner. We are a team. If I let him down we fail, if he lets me down we fail. That's how it works.

I'm not going to agree with you, because I vehemently DISAGREE with you. I think your opinions are completely wrong.

Just think of it this way:

Average Pilot + Kick Ass Gunner > Kick Ass Pilot + Average Gunner

I once had a gunner on SHARQI... he had over 125 points.. I only had like 75, but it was soooooo much fun to RAPE the other team. Good gunners rule

                            Agreed.

Sucky gunners tend to not only give away my trying to come up behind an enemy for an easy kill - but they frustrate the hell out of me and my flying can go down the crapper.

Reading this post the other day inspired me to do a little research. Decided to settle the debate on the gunner's tv view - vs - the pilot view. Not sure if you have seen the pictures or not - but if you are going to fly for me as a gunner - PLEASE LOOK AT THIS http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29408

I had a pilot last night that swore up and down that I was a bad gunner - when he never gave me a shot at anything - other than clouds. When I finally stole the pilot seat from him - he got to see first hand how to fly for your gunner. Key word there FOR your gunner. Not flying as a gunner so to speak.

Great guide, especially funny as I always tell my mate on vent that if he gets in the pilot seat I will shoot him in the face lol (he knows I'm jk,we always take it in turns if no-one else is at the helipad)

I'm not a bad heli pilot, not a great one either mind you but I find that on most servers I either don't bother with the heli coz theres a queue on the helipad or I'll join a server and my team will not have a single heli in the air,so I take the heli and try to find a gunner and more often than not they randomly bail out without me noticing and I end up hovering over armour waiting to see a tv missile launch that never comes.God damn I love it when me and my mate join a server and theres a nice attack chopper just sitting on the helipad :)

If I join a server and theres one other person wanting to use the heli I find most people are willing to take turns flying and from that I can tell if they are a better pilot than me in which case I choose to stay gunner and just take an occasional turn flying.
Of course if I am the better pilot I still take turns unless they ask me to fly, fair play and all that

For the record the thing about firing the gun at armour or helis with full health is soooo true! So many times I have been sneaking up behind a hovering heli and all of a sudden *bangbangbangbang* lol
