Re: A Chopper Pilot’s Guide to being a good gunner

Thanks for the guide, I learned a lot.

I'd like to share a tip, too. When flag capping in an attack chopper, it's a good idea for the pilot to slowly spin the chopper around. This gives the gunner a chance to search and destroy any targets who might otherwise be sneaking up behind the helo.

Don't have to spin fast, just enough so both players get a good chance to look around.

      Absolute class!!!!

One of the best posts (the original) i have ever seen in here. The flaming that followed was pretty pathetic so i stopped short of reading all the replies. (i had to bite my tounge at a couple of the replies esp. the idiot who had a pop at the British thing ) Nice work......I have however decided never to try and occupy any space inside of the chopper and will stick to ocassionally washing the windscreen when you stop:)

Very good point. I never stop turning. Not so fast we get sick, but fast enough that we'll see any enemy trying to sneak up on us.

          Spare change?

Nice article, though I'm an alright shot in the gunner's seat I've rarely had a good/smart pilot and I can't figure out how to contantly hover...

Re: A Chopper Pilot’s Guide to being a good gunner

I would just like to add one little small thing.

The reason I think so much gunners simply do not see as much things as the pilot, or at least thats what the pilot thinks, is because gunners can turn their view, Now that is an advantage but also a disadvantage. Cause a gunner will often see a dude and turn his head to follow him, while at the same time the pilot will hover in front of the enemy infantry he saw and flew to, and wonder why the **** the gunner is not doing anything. A lot of the time it's because the gunner is to busy following that one guy that he doesn't notice the pilot has stopt in front of the enemy.

Anyway so a small tip to gunners, when a pilot stops, and keeps his nose in the same direction, it's usually for a reason, stop what you are doing and line up your sights with teh nose of the heli.
And like everybody said, rememeber to spot, cause then you can also alert your pilot for that one enemy he did not see, same go's offcourse to pilots, I somtimes spot to get the gunners attention.

Re: A Chopper Pilot’s Guide to being a good gunner

I suggest you either pic Engineer, or Support as my gunner, so that we can repair/re-arm ourselves, and others. As double Engineers, we can repair armor very quickly.
Acually, you dont repair yourself in mid air, only things around you.

Re: A Chopper Pilot’s Guide to being a good gunner

I have the following suggestion to pilots who want to use their own gunners:
                  Ask nicely.

If I ask nicely and put it as a question more than 70% of players will get out. Do not ever use bail out.

"Could (insert name/you in the helo) please let my gunner in?"
                  *gets out*
                  "Thank you"
                  "Thank you"
                  "NP"

You're absolutely correct, the dual engineers is so we can hover over friendly vehicles and repair them quickly. Mainly used for Linebackers and Tanks.

Hey, strega, whats your opinion about letting me translate your guide to hungarian to post it on hungarian bf2 forum, marking you as author, and placing link to this thread?

Oh, yes, if you are good engineer, you can whore 5-10 mighty points from repairing friendly vehicles! And guess what: noone will run from you, while you repair them noone will go reverse suddenly with a strong left turn running you over for no apparenty reason. What a gain compared to the time it takes, I mean a medic can get only about 50-60 points during the same time, but being engineer and repairing friendlies is so SELFISH!

Re: A Chopper Pilot’s Guide to being a good gunner

Strega - WOW - thank you for taking the words right out of my mouth!!

The frustration of having clueless gunners about has me quitting flying - but then again, I cannot stop. heh

I cannot stress how much better it is when your gunner joins your squad so you can communicate on voice - or show which area you are going to attack because of orders, etc. I also hate when I know my gunner should be on gun vs missle - and they just have it backwards.

If I go into a still hover - not rotating - it is because i have you set up for a missle shot on a target - if I am still - they most likely do not see us - and you have time to get it right. I will never hang around for minutes because someone else can be setting up on us doing the same thing.

The not running up the chain gun on a tank or another chopper - AMEN!! You give away so much by doing that.

Even when just flying around - gunners will just run the gun all over trying to get some hit on anything. You are giving us away.

If I am ducking and diving terrain trying to make a stealthy approach - thanks for giving us away. Most of the time on the ground - if you hear a chopper - you know the general area they are coming from, but when that gun goes off - you can tell exactly where they are - and what they can see more importantly.

I consider myself to be a pretty darn good pilot - but I need to work on better rocket proficiency for the backup. I am an even better hellfire gunner - get me a glimpse of a target and I got em. By flying with so many crappy pilots it has forced me to be a better gunner. I know the reload time on the hellfire down to the second. I can fire, flip to guns (IF AND ONLY IF NEEDED or useful), and flip back almost within a second of the reload every time.

I will gun for you any time - hope to see you on a server. You can catch me on xfire - 'beerknut' on there. I run my own teamspeak server so I always have that and in game chat going. Now that you mentioned ventrillo I will put that down too just in case I happen upon you.

Also for those that think they are the end all be all pilots or gunners - give others a shot to show you they might be better than you.

I hate it when I see a chopper get wasted over and over within minutes by the same team of 2. I will get in there and steal a seat - and they spam 'bail out" - if they ever give me a chance I have proved I am worth keeping in there - either as pilot or gunner. Do what is best for the team - if you cannot survive more than a minute or two in the chopper - you do not deserve to keep using it. I would rather see it sit on the pad than see you go out and lose 2 tickets every couple minutes for us.

Also - SPOTTING - gunners - spot spot spot if you are in gun mode. Keys are AA - other helos, tanks, etc. If you see me turning away and you caught it in a side view - SPEAK UP OR SPOT IT. Also speak in terms of directions - not just yell - TANK TANK TANK - tell me where dang it!! Even left/right or up/down if you cannot grasp the clock system!!!

Great post Strega - thanks again.

Comms is the key - if you & the gunner can't talk - makes it soo much harder.

To the pilot - if you are gonna bail out - TELL ME!!!! Give me a chance to either jump into the pilots seat or bail out myself. If you don't - I will shoot YOU in the face!

Yes i agree. Comms is the key to a successful helicopter pilot & gunner team.
