I wish more people would put time into being a good gunner before jumping in a chopper. haha its only funny the first few times of hovering over an enemy base in a mec attack chopper with infantry running everywhere and the gunner is bird watching or something. on the other hand I've had some really cool games where I'll ferry another good pilot over to the enemy chopper base and cover him while he steals theirs. after that its great to have a 2 attack chopper convoy after we both go get gunners. I cant even remeber the name of the other pilot but working as a team with 2 attack choppers was pretty sweet, and pretty unstopable.

If swear to god if you spool up that chain gun and start shooting at a full health helo that I’ve snuck up on, I’m going to shoot you in the face the first chance I get. This is something you don’t EVER want to do, and I’m going to explain why. The chain gun on the nose, is good for shooting at a smoking chopper that you want to “finish off”, or for infantry that you want to staple to the ground. If I’m lining up a rocket shot, and you start blazing away on the chain gun, the enemy helo is gonna feel it, see the big red mark on his screen indicating where we are, and he’s going to do whatever he can to out maneuver us. Thus, you’ve completely owned my chances at getting a solid rocket shot, and for that I will hate you and curse your mother.
LOL, So very true. I only trust my brother when Im flying with him and hes the gunner. I hate flying with anyone else cause they shoot at everything.

Very enjoyable read.
I agree, its pretty much how attack choppers are meant to be used. All of which I do well as a gunner, I still need a bit more practice with Tv missiles on moving targets and Helis.

The attack choppers really do make or break a match, so it's critically important to have an effective pilot/gunner combo.
You pointed out two great tips that not many people use...
Spotting enemy air (and ground!) units:
I always spot threats in the air for my teams' pilots, whether I'm in the air or on hoofing it on the ground. Since there is no radar on any vehicles in BF2, this becomes essential to dogfights in choppers or planes. I love the "Thanks" you get when you spot an enemy jet/chopper on someones tail, and then watch them perform some crazyass evasive manouver.
Keep the rotors spinning when pilot is out repairing:
I do this on the transport choppers when I get to them first, and are waiting for our pilot to run over to us. Switch seats and the pilot can then take off immediately!
I hadn't thought about using this technique with the attack chopper repair situation you described though.
Oh, and when you're pinned down at a flag by a tank, you spot it, see the attack heli rush in and blow it away... Gold!
I always spam the "Thanks" message, but it just never seems like enough praise for some of those champion pilot/gunner combos.

I fly with Strega more then any one else, as in matches he is our Attack Chopper Pilot, and I'm the gunner.
Normally, pub wise I won't immediatly make a break for the chopper as I load to slow off the bat, and its usually gone by the time I get there. But f#ck if Strega or another teammate on vent has it, sure as hell I'll probably gun for them.
Every word he says is absolutly true, and if he doesn't shoot you in the face for being a dumbsh!t in a pub, I probably will.

Great little guide, Strega. Nice tip about not opening up on a chopper with the chain gun way out of range. I enjoy gunning and I've been making that mistake. Hope to meet up with you one day and gun for you. It's hard as h*ll to find a good gunship pilot that flys to line the gunner up. I may sound selfish since I said I'm a gunner, but the whole purpose of the gunship pilot is to line up the gunner to wreak havoc with his available weapons and throw rockets at stuff when possible. I wish more pilots understood this basic fact of life.
