Hi,

I used to have alot of problems including connection loss where it would just shut down for no reason and then go back to my desktop. I also had the problem of waiting ages for a game to load it would say "loading complete verifying client data" for up to 8 minutes and this really used to annoy the sh$t out of me.

Now i have NONE of these problems and join games very fast and never get disconnected. How did i fix it, all i did was re-format my hard drive, and like an ealier poster said got rid of all my music/videos/porn, basically everything.

Reloaded bf2 and spec forces completed the patching and now, not a problem in the world. My pc is around 8 months old and running like a champion. Hope this helps some of you.

Is that only for dual core cpu's? Because i put what you stated into my registry for a single cpu.

it may work if you also have a Hyperthreaded cpu.

that registry fix doesnt disable either of the cores. what it does is fix the way windows handles dual cpu's with performance monitors. here is the reason from microsoft's page:

"Because Windows XP was not originally designed to support performance states on multiprocessor configurations, changes are required to correctly realize this support on multiprocessor systems. Windows XP Service Pack 2 includes the required changes to the kernel power manager. These changes make sure that Windows XP correctly functions on multiprocessor systems with processor performance states.

This hotfix also addresses the following issues on computers that have multiple processors that support processor performance states: •A possible decrease in performance on single-threaded workloads when processor performance states are using demand-based switching.•The synchronization of the processor Time Stamp Counter (TSC) registers across processors when you use the ACPI Power Management timer on multiprocessor systems. •ACPI C-state promotion and demotion issues in the kernel power manager."



that is why the registry fix works. has nothing to do with turning on or off a core to play. the reason setting affinity works is that it turns off the performance monitor for that program on that core or cpu. i never said the disabling one core doesnt work but seems to me that fixing the underlying issue is a better way than a bandaid fix. either way works but why have to go through the trouble of making new shortcuts if you can make one fix and be done with it. may even get better performance with it also.

Just to make sure because I don't want to jack anything up. I either do that whole registry fix thing, or I can use that patch insted for the quick way? Right, one or the other? I have an AMDX2 4400 and have been getting the symptoms described about the constant disconnects. I tried everything that was listed on here, and I think I'll need this fix as others did. I read about this hotfix a while back on a tech forum, but I never had an issue with a game until recently with BF2SF. I'll wait for a response before I do something, lol. Thanks:)

Well Im getting kinda desperate here ! You guys may be playing a few hours or minuttes online, but I cant play online at ALL ! Offline games work perfectly fine whitout any trouble whatso ever, but as soon as I go online, the game freezes up after taking max 10 steps on the map :cry: This goes for ranked servers as well as unranked servers. I have tried almost everything to get this solved and re-installed the game I dont know how many times. I use latest patch 1.12 and PB, my drivers are the latest and like I said, it works perfectly fine OFFline.
Computerspecs are :

AMD 64 x 2 Dual Core 4800+
Nvidia GT7800GTX
2GB RAM
2x160GB Seagate Barracuda drives
4Mb/768K ADSL

Could somebody PLEASE have a clue what could be wrong here. All other online games work fine, such as UT2K4 and EQ2. There are no problems at all with those.
I have tried turning my ZA free edition FW off to no vain and also NC AV as well to no vain. It must be some online related thing that cr*ps things up, and Im quite sure its within the game itself :hmm:

Reformat your computer then install windows and nothing else. Then the game and patch and see how that goes. So the only thing on your pc is this game, from there you can work backwards as you re-install other programs. Might work, might not, but it certainly helped me.

that seems a firewall problem: look in your book after 'firewall settings' and open the ports. your firewall doesn't allow bf2 to make connection to the server and closes it (connecion lost)

I am NOT going to reformat my PC just coz of this game that btw works fine OFFline ! I have already tried totally disabling my FW to no vain, and besides BF2 finds the net perfectly and the server browser goes online fine and finds around 4600 servers in no time with the FW enabled :hmm:
It freezes just shortly after joining a map, ranked servers or non ranked. Only option is to reset the PC.

Before you start yelling and rolling your eyes, remember that anyone that gives you advice on here, does so out of the kindness of their heart. They dont get paid to spend time on your problems, they do it because they want to help other people.

So if you dont like my advice, that is fine, i am not a computer expert and i dont claim to be, but i know how frustrating it can be when a game doesnt work, so i was sharing with you, what worked for me in a similar situation.

I'll just recap all of what I know / and that might help you. Starting with the easiest things to try:

1. PunkBuster.
   Also, remember there is an external component called Punkbuster. Try update PB manually. Some people have reported that manually downloading the latest PB helped.

2. CPU Affinity
   Once BF2 has loaded, alt-tab and press alt-ctrl-del and right click BF2 and set affinity to CPU 1 only. I'm sorry if you have tried this already... I'm kinda tired here, and wasn't sure if you had confirmed it or not. But try this simple fix first.
   
   
3. Ports and hosts.
   The following ports and hosts are used with BF2, plus more. Outpost Firewall would give me detailed logs of what was used. Initially I had to manually enable/allow those Hosts below. Maybe try the same?
   
   TCP: 29900, 29901, 29920, 28910, 4711
   UDP: 27900, 29910, 27901, 55123-55125, 1500-4999, 16567-16867
   HOSTS:
   battlefield2.available.gamespy.com
   gpsp.gamespy.com
   BF2Web.gamespy.com
   MASTER5.EVENBALANCE.COM (for punkbuster)
   
   
4. Uninstall ZA
   ZA is dirty. Why not use Windows XP Firewall? It's pretty safe and does a good enough job if you are updated and are smart. Just try Windows SP2 Firewall and see if that makes a difference. Screenshot below.
   
   
   If you're locking up and can only reset... it sounds like something is happening in the background causing it to freeze when your connection is being established with the server. That's gotta be software, so try a different firewall.
   
   I used to get that with older (buggy) games like Asheron's Call 2. When it would connect I would freeze up.. that was because Norton AV was kicking up a fuss and the popup would freeze my game. Windows is kinda buggy like that when something pops up and tries to steal 'focus'. What I'm saying is that your problem sounds very much like it's caused by a background service; such as firewall or AV. So if the above doesn't fix you, then...
   
   
5. What else?
   Well there's more things, like being unlucky enough to have your ISP blocking certain port ranges. Unlikely, but possible. I'm not sure where you're from or what connection you have but there are more suggestions that can be made... why not try the above and let us know of any changes?

Personally I suggest uninstalling ZA as I had terrible problems with that and ever since it's Windows 2000 release (hmm a few years ago!) it's caused problems with work and my friends' PCs. I'd suggest Windows XP SP2 Firewall for ease of use (make sure you enable all on BF2) or Outpost Firewall if you are hardcore. Just make sure ZA is well and truely uninstalled before trying!

PS- are you using an external router for that adsl connection? Does your router/modem have a built in firewall?

I actually wonder if this is advisable. I only say that because up until last week (I've been playing since July), I had never gotten a "Problem with your connection..." error, but the moment I updated PB manually (via their pbsetup), it started s happening quite frequently. Coincidence? <shrug>

You were rude to him when all he was doing was replying to your (ill-advised and short-thought) advice). Really? Have you tried finding an older version of PB to use or revert back to? I was just going offline but maybe you could try Fileplanet for an older version of PB?

You could try the official EA forum here. There's an 'official' response from EA about connection problems, though yours is more general -but it (or the other forum) might shed some light on your specific PB issue.

Thanx for the suggestion WiredE m8 ! I will try un-unstalling ZA and use the Win SP2 one instead. Im sure its SW related too, and seems like something in the background is locking things up :hmm: Im using an external router yes, but with no HW FW, hence using a SW one.

im having same problem all the time " there is a problem with your connection " i have a wireless router and a wireless usb connector , also used for my 360 but only recently. i always get this message
i have opened all the ports and yet nothing works
