Re: So when exactly is it appropriate to punish accidental TK's?
Well it usually goes something like this, you have a good shot at a plane so you fire. Half a second later a friendly plane appears between the path of the missiles and the enemy plane. The missiles go after the closest heat source. The friendly is hit.
The other popular scenario, you have a good shot at a plane so you take it. The missiles miss the plane and continue to go forward. Somewhere out of the draw distance they lock onto a friendly and hit them. This happens a lot.
You can shoot down planes with the stingers, although not as easily as helicopters you can do it. The biggest problem you will face is the missiles missing and locking on to something else. The best way to bring down an enemy plane is to lead the plane by a considerable amount. This means you'll most likely be dumbfiring the missiles however the hope is that the enemy plane will be the closest thing to the missiles and they will lock onto the plane. However sometimes a friend will appear when you don't want him to.
Anyway, I'm not trying to argue too much with you. If it is fairly deliberate I would punish as well but you have to keep in mind that the stray missiles have to go somewhere. So your buddy may have fired these missiles at something on the other side of the map but they missed then the missiles locked on to you as you flew by. The stinger missiles can go quite far. Most of the planes that I have accidentally hit were not in view nor were the missiles that I fired in view either.
