Hey who said variety had to be good looking? Maybe DICE went and said to the mappers "Nah, this place is too pretty, ugly it up a bit!"
Roof Camping? Yes or No

Man, all of you guys are going to hate Medal of Honor: Airborne. I mean, the whole point of that game is landing anywhere. Even the tallest tower. Even the rooftops that are "otherwise unreachable". And I thought everyone would like an extended battlefield (read, battlefield not Battlefield) with vertical aspects. :laugh:Comment

So much discussion abaut roof camping and podsurfing.
I don´t camp in the rooftops and I don´t pod surf, it a glitch...yes...detracts from the game? For me no, just gives a new tatical dimension.
Roofcampers can kill you once, the next time you already know where they are and they can´t go anywhere far, they need to show themselves to shoot and they are easy spoted by everyone, so what´s the fuss?
Pod surfers can go anywhere on map? They circunvent flags? What to do?
The first thing before going after another podsurfer is to destroy the beacon, without a beacon in the middle of the map the pod surfing stops.
I use the beacon on very rare ocasions, it´s easy to spot where people will land, and normally there are lot of campers waiting for dead meat that falls from the sky...so this is a way of not dying when poding to a congestionated area.
If a thing is not meat to happen but is fun and gives another dimention to the game why no keep it? As DICE said it´s fun.
Jesus I must cut down the lenght of my posts .Comment

I am all for roof camping, being a sniper is all about finding a vantage point and giving your team mates some cover. If thats on a roof or hiding somewhere then thats all part of the game. If i come up against a roof camper i can nearly always take them out, just wait for them to stick their fat head over the edge and blammmm.Comment

its the ones that hide up there as assault and only expose themselves for just a few seconds to rain down rockets at you before disappearing from the ledge. Its worse when the buildings aren't so tall, like in camp G. Good luck trying to snipe them and not get blasted in the process. Then there is the problem of going your own way to get them, and no go after objectives on the ground.Comment

I think i can safely say that the majority of BF2142 players played BF2.. yet BF2 was full of roof camping and it was accepted, you found way to combat it and get rid of them... what has changed so much from bf2 to bf2142? yet as soon as anyone gets to a roof in bf2142 you get "haxor, Cheater, Exploiter" another thing.. some of you play on FF=OFF servers, is using rdx to get onto the roof got the same stigma as podding onto a roof?Comment

That's one of the things I find most weird about the rooftop hate. I played BF2 intensively, and like I said earlier rooftop camping was absolutely part of the game because you could get on to them in pretty much every single map -- even power plant cooling towers!
The vertical aspect adds realism that is most definitely there in real life, and I enjoy it. I don't like playing a game and always being able to guess where an enemy is shooting at me from out of about five places.
But also like I said earlier, regardless of that barrel screenshot, there are rooftops (especially in Fall of Berlin) that the developers clearly didn't intend for anyone to really get onto. There are phone tower-like structures and such on some of them that look fine to the commander and from below, but when you get onto the roof you realise they're floating in mid air.
So although I advocate rooftop camping and like it when servers don't mind it, I think I can safely conclude that it wasn't something the developers intended for maps that don't have flying vehicles or APCs. Suez Canal in the screenshot above obviously does have flying vehicles, so the developers know full well people can get onto those towers.Comment

They ARE eliminating it... or at least that's the word... in the next patch they will be fixing the spawn beacon "surfing" that people have been doing, which is how people usually get on the roof. There's only one other way I know of (aside from regular access to the roof), which is to go on a non-friendly fire server and RDX yourself up there.... I think both are pretty lame tactics... and I'd agree myself that the "surfing" is indeed exlpoiting... it was NEVER intended to work that way, and against people that don't know how to get it to do it, they have an unfair advantage.... that's by defination, an exploit.Reading snippets from different threads that alot of you are against roof camping.... why? we didnt do it on our server untils a DICE guy played on our server and did it.. so we thought if its good enough for DICE its good enough for us... plue I read that the DICE team didnt inially create this to happen but since it has happened they say its fun and refuse to eliminate it.. so why does some people call it exploiting and such?
there are many ways to get roof campers off a roof, theres arty, rockes and spawn beacons to get yourself on the roofs and clear them out.. being on the roof makes you far from invicible...
And nobody said it made you invincible.... I've sniped many dumb podders off of the roofs.... but if they get a beacon up there, it's really hard to get up there without getting shot (provided you HAVE a squad, and setup your own beacon to do the same thing... which is mainly the only way of getting rid of thier beacon up there).....so they have an unfair advantage of a spawn point they shouldn't have just about wherever they want it, that you will have a very hard time getting rid of.
So yea, I'd say that's an exploit myself. I'm glad to see DICE actually acknowdeging that the pod "surfing" is an exploit finally and is getting out of hand (which is why they plan to fix it now... they saw what it was doing to the gameplay. at first it didn't seem much of an issue to them)
They are changing it... why? Not really because you could get on the roofs, they already said that really wasn't a big deal to them.....but because you could "surf" across half a map or more to another flag way behind your lines, effectively defeating the purpose of the map design altogether. THAT's why they decided to change it and nip that bug (yes it IS a bug) in the butt.... personally I'd rather see both gone myself anyways.... getting somewhere you shouldn't be normally by means of something that not everyone knows how to do is EXPLOITING (by definition of the term).Originally posted by BallaAceThink of it as a strategy. It's fun because ground fighting on some maps can get boring. So you switch to the roofs of buildings. Great for snipers.
I'm FOR it. Please DICE don't change it.
Btw I love it because the view from the roofs are great :)
Honestly I've reported people for glitching inside of buildings (something that nobody argues isn't an exploit) with screens of the inside it even, and do they get wiped? Nope. So really almost nobody has been getting wiped recently for that.... your arguement is moot.
Yes, and now they are RECENDING thier decision because it turned out to cause even MORE problems then just rooftop camping.... so it's not "okay" anymore... and in fact will be patch out of the game soon (here's hoping for sooner then later... and that the patch even COMES at at all :P what's taking so damn long!)Comment

Unless they remove the ability to move the pod at all, then people will still get on roofs. Even if they make it so you randomly drop down within 10m of the beacon, you still have a good chance of getting on a roof if your beacon is next to it. I don't think if/when the patch comes out it will eliminate the ability to get on a roof. Rather I think it will keep you from moving 100-250m away from the beacon.Comment

because EA have named it as an exploitComment

Sorry, that doesn't answer it. Unless I missed it, I saw nothing in the official EA page about getting on rooftops. There is the statement about abusing geometry without risk, but that is referring to glitching inside objects, not being out in the open where you are vulnerable to orbitals, snipers, PK Rockets, etc.... And don't say that they can't be taken out, it just takes a little skill. We allow roofs on our servers, oh my gosh did I just say that, and it is easy to get them off. If they have a beacon up there so much the better. They make easy pickings, they can't cap flags from up there, and every time they die, they lose a ticket.Originally posted by I..C..U
The other article is about Pod Surfing, which is not what we are talking about here. You can place a beacon next to a building and even without moving your pod it is possible to end up on a building randomly. Moving your pod 5-10m will easily place you on a building. There are extensive threads in these forums on how to move your pod to do just that.
The argument that not everyone can do it is bogus. Maybe everyone doesn't know quite how to make it work, but then a lot of people can't figure out how to use a knife because they can't figure out the timing and distance. A lot of people can't fly the gunship or drive a walker. I guess that means that the really good gunship pilots are exploiting? Please, give me a break.
Please read this post, found back on Page 5 of this very thread. There are qoutes in there from [DICE]CKMC, EA, and the EA policy on server admins setting server specific rules. All are very specific about rooftop camping and getting on rooftops.
I will be suprised if the rooftop caming goes away with patch 1.40. Unless they make it so that you come straight down on the beacon, not even 5m away from it, there will still be people on the roofs. You don't believe me? Get a couple buddies and go into an empty server. Make a squad and throw a beacon down right next to a building. Die a few times and come in without moving your pod. Eventually you will end up on the roof.
Finally, don't forget Bridge at Remagen 64 man conquest. When EU takes the first side of the bridge they get a transport. With it they can fly to any roof they want. Does the PAC get a transport? Not unless they steal the EU one. There is only one transport on the map. For those of you claiming that it's an exploit because everyone can't get up there, I guess the whole EU team would be exploiting that map since they get an easy way up, the transport, and PAC doesn't.Comment
