hello i dont know if somone posted something similer to this but can anyone help solve this problem?
at random times whilst in game the whole thing freezes and my speakers emit a shrill continuous tone.
i can do nothing no ALT-TAB no CTRL-ALT-DEL the only thing to do is press the reset button.

please can someone help fix this?

Hmm, perhaps you have something going on with HD or Memory something going on hardware related perhaps. Other than that i dont know what to tell you.

Dunno, but frequently i am starting to get many CTD's..

Sometimes it goes to the Blue screen of death....

I am tlaking about pach 1.4...

I have found that takeing the work load away from the CPU helps. The easyist thing to do first is to run a program called smart close. Smart close isnt a hack it only closes programs that you dont need to run with the game, Like instant message programs and If it closed a program you want to run while the game is running, like team speak, you can add it to the protected list. My computer goes from 50 programs running to 28 programs running. After running Smart Close I start BF2. I hope this helps. . . . . . . . . .Red

i havent played for a while but now i went to okay online BF2 and when i press a server to enter the game crashes, it plays single player though....someone help pleasee....

I'm having the same problem here.

I just reformatted my computer, reinstalled BF2 and Special Forces, then installed 1.4.. And I can't play online at all. Every time I try to join a server, the game instantly crashes to the desktop.

My game tends to freeze up, sometimes it crashes but for the most part freezes. It can freeze anywhere from about 5 or so minutes into the game on a map like Midway 07, or pretty much not at all on a map like Karkand or Mashtuur. It freezes at times of minimal action as well as times of lot's of action so I know it's not dependent on that.

I've tried turning off all start up tasks in msconfig but that doesn't help. I've tried turning down the sound hardware acceleration to basic and turning sound quality in BF2 to low, still freezes. I've reinstalled BF2 as well as the latest Nvidia driver. And most recently defragged the hard drive. I'm playing on low settings with 100% view distance, also turning everything I could either off or low in the Nvidia control panel.

Now for the computer specs...
It's a brand new HP Pavillion a1600n.
AMD X2 3800+
1gig ddr2
Nvidia FX5200 265mb PCI (Yes I know it's not supported but it runs the game)
300 watt PSU
200gb HDD
OS Microsoft XP Media Center Edition Sp 2

Any ideas that might help will be greatly appreciated, also if you need more info in addition to this just say so.

Iv not played this game in months and updated to the current version. But I cant join any games. My computer never crashes it loads the map to 100% (which takes ages) and just as I think its about to start I get

"connection to server lost"

I have defragged my drive and tried using that smartclose program to close all un-needed programs, iv also deleted the bf2 folder in my documents and disabling EAX sound thingy in game but still cant join a game.

I thought it may be qtracker but iv also used the ingame browser and still no joy.

Can anyone help!

I ran into this issue with the 1.41 patch. This thread seems to be more about 1.4 but the info may help for it as well:

After an hour of downloading the patch I installed it. Everything installed and said it was finished. I started up BF2 and it said I was on the same 1.4 version. So I installed again and same thing. I thought my download was corrupt, so I downloaded 1.41 from another site, installed it, and still not upgraded.

This was driving me crazy because I never had a problem with a patch install before. So I went to my install directory of BF2 and in the main folder is a file called bf2patch.log and it said that it could not find bf2.exe. Well, that is true because I renamed it. I never had this problem with any previous patch before, it always installed and found the working executable, but this patch does not seem to do it. So I renamed it to bf2.exe, installed the patch, put the exe back the way it was and ran the game and the upgrade worked.

So if you are having installation problems, be sure to check that log file I mentioned, it may give you clues to what is going on. Also, I do not have the game installed in the default drive or folders, the patch seems to understand that.

First of all do the thing below.

Then start up bf2 with or without a mod i.e. I was doing this with PoE.
Use in game browser and join a game with no people on it, with the lowest ping.

Once its loaded run about for a few seconds then ALT + TAB to qtracker copy a server address you want to join.

Go back to BF2 leave the server, connect to ip, paste in server address and join.

worked for me and mine didnt work at all before.

p.s U will need to redo this when the map changes at the end of a round as you will lose connection when "verifying client", just go to favourites on the in game browser and your last server should be there......I think.

I've messed with the 1.4 patch for 2 months, I've even reformated and reinstalled BF2 then patched the 1.4 full, it wont work, I run it like I do all the other patches, so either I have to wait for 1.5 or I never play BF2 again?!?!?! WTF!!!

I used to crash almost every time I clicked join game, but it hasn't happend for a long time now. The only thing that is different about my system is that after I reformatted I didn't install any of the .net framework from the windows update site. Whether its this or that the servers have become more stable I don't know, but I don't think i'll be installing .net again.

Simply removing it after it has been installed is difficult, the only way is to not install it in the first place.
