Save the $25 bucks you would on the game and go rent a lawnmore from a rental place for a weekend.. Run around town charging $5 per cut.. by the end of the weekend you would have enough to buy the game, and get a couple of months worth of highspeed interent

Bf2 uses anywhere from 40-80kbps down, depending on server size etc. Your typical dial up connection will give you 6-8kbps down. DO THE MATH. Sorry to shout, but there is a reason it says you have to have broadband.

Going to broadband is not just for games though. Web pages are so graphic intensive nowadays, it take ages on dial up. Have you even used broadband? That's where like, you click the page, it reponds immediately with information you need. It's pretty amazing....:)

Another angle you could put on it is to get VOIP service for your phone. I have Vonage that uses my broadband, and it is only like 25 bucks for unlimited calling anywhere. Before I was paying 35 bucks just for a local land line phone. I bet they are paying through the nose for long distance already. I pay about 75 dollars a month for basic cable, cable internet, and unlimited calling anywhere. It just makes sense.
Do you mean kilobytes? The terms kbp/s and kilobytes are very different. So far, I see that one must have a 140 kbp/s connection to play a 64 player server minimum, 100 kbp/s connection for 32 players, 60kbp/s connection for 16 players. A dial up connection goes at 45 kbp/s. Perhaps a 16 player server might suffice, but even still, it'll prove impractical.

I checked out bandwith usage on full 16-player Sharqi. I got rates between 7-10kB/s, while 56kb/s is equal to 7kB/s (closer to 4kB/s in practise?). Impossible. You might be able to play some infantry mod with 3-4 players without vehicles but nothing else. The demo has 32-player Oman.

(Sorry if bit and bytes are wrong, theyre kinda confusing in english)

In theory, a 56K modem can reach speeds of 9 kilobytes, but this is much reduced due to FCC regulations and overhead. Overall, a 56K connection has a download speed of roughly 5.5 - 6 kilobytes. I'm not counting 16 player servers out, but as I've said, it'll be less fun...

Ok so we know that your going to buy BF2 no matter how much info we feed you. I would suggest you DL the single player mod that opens it to 64 person map size and be done.

Why are you still bothering with this thread should be the new question.

If you're only going to be able to play 16 player games anyway, to be honest it's just not worth it. The game experience is nothing untill you've had an all out war on a 64 player server. 16 players on a 64 player map is a joke too so I'd hardly count that either.

You're just going to have to bite the bullet and either live with dialup and no BF2 or convince your parents that people use DSL/Cable for a reason.

Explain to me, with logic, not an opinion, how someone with a high ping lags out a server. A response with actual facts would be nice to see.

                1) A person with a high ping is not sending out any more packets than anyone else. If anything, he is probably sending less because he probably has ploss with it.

                2) The server does not wait for him to send a signal and puts everyone else on hold until he does send one, it keeps updating player positions no matter what and then sending those positions back to you. You see him moving in accordance to where the server says he is.

                3) When a person is experiencing packet loss, he appears to be jumping around on the screen a bit and on your minimap because the server is trying to predict where he should be with his last known movement.

                4) He is having a hard time hitting everyone, you are just having a hard time hitting him if he has ploss. And even at that, you should still be able to smoke him, if not, you got bigger issues than one person with a high ping.

And on the side, not everyone has access to broadband internet, yet. It isn't a matter of being a cheapskate (not always at least), but sometimes it is a matter of availability in your area.

Even if it did work on dial up, have fun downloading the new patches when they come out.

I give up. I'll just look at alternatives like Joint Operations then. Thank you for your opinions.

Now we can leave this thread to die. Good day to you all.

Joint Ops will be a nightmare on a 56k too. Trust me.

Yeah, but I've heard that the game has good networking code. Some 56Ker said that he could play the game on a 32 player server and some co op.

One day... I'll stumble back onto BF2... and perhaps find everyone playing 2142 instead.

Tell your parents to knock off the Luddite crap and get with the program. Tell them the 1990s called, they want their Internet Connection back.

I will try a renewed effort to get my hands on DSL, which seems unlikely at the moment.

I just had this great idea! Maybe I should get a wireless thingy and try to pick up other people's LAN signals and get onto their network at home! I can also head off to the library with my laptop to the local library and play for 2 hours (although with the sound off, of course.) My local library has an excellent LAN signal. Maybe I can tap into that...

Forget dial up... Maybe I should try that instead...

uh you know they can encrypt their signals? if you play bf2 with their signal, it will leave such a big bandwidth mark that they will eventually notice
