as for playing over dialup, it ain't gonna happen

I once monitored my upstream over my G15 keyboard while playing BF2 and it never really dropped below 15KBps up, and a 56k connection isn't even capable of that

Man I hate parents like that... Reminds me of the thread where the kid wanted to buy AF but his parents thought the internet was "unsafe" to use his credit cards. Your parents should help you enjoy your hobby and the $7 difference is a bad excuse. Sure, you can study and read with 56K but you can accomplish alot more with high speed whether its your studies or online gaming. Show them the performance difference between dial up and DSL/Cable and they should understand why its necessary.

you might be able to play. i remember playing a clan from brazil for kicks. they weren't too bad, however, they all had stable pings of about 550 to 650. it was hard to shoot them because they seemingly jumped around on screen so much, but it was just as hard for them to hit us. we found out after the match that they were all on dial up from brazil.

i've managed playing on japanese servers with 200 pings, just to be able to play a mod or custom map.

Tell em about all pRon you missing out on, which is vital for your development. Also (i dunno about the billing in the states) going cable stops u paying line rental on the landline and call costs. Then theres skype for good savings, but pRon would be the main point...lol

Thank you all for your opinions and thoughts, everyone. I'll continue to consider BF2 on dial up, but it does seem that results on dial up are rather mixed.

I'll look at alternatives then. Joint Operations here I come!

I've tested my connection. The result was 21 kbp/s up. And 44 kbp/s down.

I don't feel like downloading an extremely large demo... That will take me 10 days to download tops. (If I don't use my internet during that period and keep it redialing.)

XX55XX, I think the demo would be a better bet. 10 days of downloading or $50 for something you probably can't even use? If it takes so long to download, then what do you think will happen when you play the game? It'll be slow and laggy. I wanted to mention that just because servers are nearby does not lower your ping necessarily. In addition, you'll have to find vanilla BF2 servers, which, at times, is extremely difficult. I live in Nashville, and I only get a handful of servers under 100 ping that aren't full, aren't empty, and are actually up and running.

For years I played Tribes 2 on a server in Houston from the UK on dial-up with a ping of around 450 spiking to 600 and 128 players, the lag never prevented me from competing(as I would mainly fly bombers). I wonder what would happen if I tried to recreate such a feat with BF2 :laugh: .
