GDC Revokes Pioneer Award from Nolan Bushnell Following Public Outcry

Every year, the Game Developers Choice Awards recognizes people that have had a significant influence in the industry for one reason or another. The recognition comes in the form of the Pioneer Award and is given to those that have "developed a breakthrough technology, game concept, or gameplay design at a crucial juncture in video game history." This year, the award was to be given to Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell. However, once this news broke, GDC was flooded with concerns and a fair bit of outrage from the gaming community. It was then that GDC organizers were prompted to revoke the planned reward for Bushnell. Why was the public upset at GDC's choice of Bushnell? It seems to stem from the fact t...

If you stick to the 4:3 ratio, the remaining space on your television is filled with art work for the two competing players. There...

The Father of Video Games, Ralph Baer, Passed Away at the Age of 92

Ralph Baer, the person that is hailed as the father of video games, has passed away at the age of 92.

Baer is credited with creating the very first video game console. It was originally called the Brown Box but was later licensed and sold by Magnavox in 1972 as the Magnavox Odyssey. The success of the Odyssey paved the road for competition from other companies, such as Atari. Baer's invention led to arcade machines, Pong, and eventually the consoles and games we have today.

Beyond that, Baer also created the first light gun peripheral for consoles. He then also went on to create Simon, an electronic toy based...
