The hunger for a new Onimusha is real.

Cumulative sales of the Onimusha franchise now exceed 10 million units, thanks to very strong first-day sales for Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

According to Capcom, Onimusha: Way of the Sword sales surpassed 1 million units on its September 4, 2026 launch day. It seems obvious that fans of the franchise were very eager for a new game after not getting a fresh release in over 20 years.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is out today from Capcom. This new release is available on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, Switch 2, Steam, and Epic. This marks the first new Onimusha game in 20 years.

Capcom announced yesterday that the release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword has moved up slightly. Instead of coming out on September 25, Onimusha will instead release on September 4, 2026. Capcom gave itself a little more distance between its new title, Grand Theft Auto 6, and the pre-GTA launch traffic jam other studios have set up to also avoid releasing near Grand Theft Auto 6.

Capcom says that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic, and the Microsoft Store on September 25, 2026. Get used to seeing September for the next several game release date announcements, because there sure were a lot of them revealed today during the State of Play.

Capcom made a surprise announcement last night at The Game Awards when they revealed a trailer for a new Onimusha game. The new game is called Onimusha: Way of the Sword and it will be the first new entry in the series since 2006's Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.
