Hands On with Sea of Thieves (PC)

During the most recent beta for Rare's upcoming high seas pirating adventure, Sea of Thieves, I was fortunate enough to be given a key and test the waters for myself. My first go at the game included two of my friends and a random person teaming up for a four man crew aboard a large and worthy vessel. We collected our supplies from the port at which we spawned. Supplies that included bananas to help us replenish our health if needed, cannonballs to engage in piracy on the open waters, wooden boards to patch up any battle scars on our boat, and ammunition for our weapons. Plus, who could forget the pre-launch celebratory grog that swiftly caused me to lose control over my character as he threw up all over the tavern. It was just another day in the life of a pirate! The sun was shining through some sparse but great looking clouds and the seas were calm. A distant storm could be seen forming b...

Hands On Gameplay Preview of Past Cure

Back in January, I was offered the opportunity to try out an early build of the upcoming psychological thriller meets third-person action title, Past Cure. The build of the game I played was just two levels from the full game. At the time of the preview, the game was still very much in development at Phantom 8 Studio. Typically, when you play a game you notice that they tend to mesh all of their gameplay elements into a singular focus for the entirety of the experience. There usually isn't a very clear-cut change in tone and gameplay focus between two levels. That doesn't seem to be the case with Past Cure. Instead, there will be levels where the playable character Ian, relies on stealth, avoidance, and capacity to solve some fairly easy puzzles. All of these happen in a dark, creepy dream-world filled with visions and nightmares that don't ...

    Hands On with Welkin Road

I was given the opportunity to check out the high flying, parkour antics in Welkin Road. Welkin Road is an upcoming Indie game from Gregor Panic that sends you sailing over platforms high in the sky as you try to make your way from point A to point B. Along the way you will have to traverse long distances by way of running, jumping, wall-running, grappling, and swinging.

The game features two modes, one of which is a normal progression mode through the various levels. The other is a pure speedrun mode that challenges you to beat your best times and the best times in the world.
Soaring amid the clouds, Welkin Road blends free running with grappling-hook-powered aerobatics, challenging

    Assault Android Cactus Review

A fun, colorful, and fresh take on twin-stick shooters and bullet hell bosses.
It needs to be said upfront that I'm not normally a big fan of the "bullet hell" style of games. Even back during the height of Geometry Wars' popularity, I only managed to earn just four achievements before I hit a brick wall and ultimately never touched the game again for the better part of a decade. It's not that I hate that particular genre of games, it's more so that they hate me and my poor reaction times. You're probably wondering then just how it is I wound up volunteering to review Assault Android Cactus, a game that unapologetically combines bullet hell bosses with "less hectic" wave-based levels that are more common to twin-stick shooters. Well, I'll tell you how I ended up here: I thought the game looked fun and I was right, it is fun. Assault Android Cactus is a rather splendid hybrid of a twin-stick shooter and a traditional "bullet hell" style of game. The main campaign be...

Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns Review

Fresh, exciting, and fun but comes up just shy of greatness.
Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns delivers on being a solid expansion to the already enjoyable base Guild Wars 2 experience. If you already have a predisposition to disliking the MMO genre or Guild Wars 2, this expansion won’t suddenly turn you into a believer. What it will do is offer tons of content for one flat rate that fans of the game probably have no qualms about picking up immediately. If you haven’t played Guild Wars 2 for a while, you will first notice a ton of changes. This might actually be a bit overwhelming to returning players. Skills have been redone. Lion’s Arch has a gorgeous new layout, and the world has undergone some Living World story changes that you may not be aware of just yet. That is perfectly fine. Long before you dive into the level 80 content of Heart of Thorns, you will undoubtedly want to spend a bit of time familiarizing yourself with the old mechanics and trying to c...
