Why is this "The End?", and how should this apply to competitions?

I don't see how from the details in this article competitive orginizations should have to pay any more than the licence fee for each CD key. The CPL isn't charging anyone to 'just play CS'. If CS were being charged - wouldn't that make Ultimate Arena illegal - or any clan getting sponsored or anyone getting money from anyone else and anything CS related.

This article has no details whatsoever...allot like other UK news...and shouldn't concern anyone.

I like what you're getting at. This article was very poor and the title alone was very anti-valve. Questioning whether this was the end. Foolish really, and I wouldn't mind not seeing another news post by this idiot on the website again.

ok, so if this is true:

does it apply to lans such as million man lan? due to the fact that they charge people per seat to play games, doesn't that mean that these companies (i.e. valve etc..) will charge the pple who do the public lans?

But if you read my post in #15, other companies do the same thing. Its not cheap to do this and lan center owners should be prepared to cough up the money if they want to legally put the games on their machines. But if they dont want to pay, they dont have to put cs on their machines, its that simple. This is still something that lan center owners should worry about. Yeah, I guess it could be bad if centers stop playing cs, but they do this with every other game out there too. But this isnt stopping me from playing hl2 when it comes out because it doesn't effect me in anyway what so ever when I play it at home.

#25: Valve's publisher gets the money.
what if LAN centres just stick with cs 1.5 on their machines? then what?

Hole for what? A big pile of money they're going to make from future CS products and Half-Life 2? Because for every single one of you that bash Valve, there are 500 to 1000 people that either don't give a rats ass, because they actually enjoy playing CS and other Valve games, and/or respect Valve and buy their products.

the phillipines guy is saying that its rediculous charging for what once was a free downloadable mod. i think youre forgetting that it is in fact running on top of Valve's creation, the half life engine. no engine, no FREE cs.

valve are most likely charging for their engine use, rather than just a single game that is CS. after gooseman (the true creator of CS, peace be upon him, lol) sold valve his CS mod, valve altered the EULA to include a clause that sez every mod created for their engine (HL) automatically becomes property of valve. this happened quite a while ago.

Hope they plan on paying ID Software for the use of the engine, the way you are speaking. Note that VALVe only modified the Quake1/2 engines a bit, not very much. Also, they can not legally force all mods to become their property. Thats like saying if you created a music CD and burned it, its now the property of the CD manufactorer.

VALVe created 1 game.... it was only a decent game, nothing to rave about. They have no right to charge LANS until they can show they are able to bring LANS a larger profit, which means that they need more games to be rated highly and be played a ton.

VALVe's going under and its just a matter of time before they release a statement. They've caused themselves way to many problems that could of been easily avoided.

I happen to own a LAN center, here in the Philippines. (The guy who posted # 7 should pay us a visit...we actually charge Php 25 per hour for online CS (about 50cents US).
$0.50 USD goes a whole hell of a lot further in the Philippines than in the US, so it's not like they're charging dirt cheap rates there by any means. With that in mind, obviously charging US rates in 3rd world countries would be fairly ridiculous (imagine VALVe wanting $125 per machine per month in 1st world countries).

But honestly, chances are places like this will just stick with CS1.5 and not have to worry about comparitive value licensing (which would be probably more like 85 cents per machine).

I am trying desperately to continue to like Valve. Half-Life was a fabulous game, and no doubt CS wouldn't be as popular as it is without their support. They've done several things right.

It seems like a terrible time to ask for money, though. The two games they've been promising are still nowhere to be seen, and they just sliced the only community they had right in half.

We all should know by now that no matter what happens someone is going to be angry whenever CS is changed. Everyone who has been around long enough should also know that eventually that anger subsides. I'm confident that once Steam is sufficiently tweaked this trend will continue. That time is not now.

It just feels like being kicked when you're down. I would hope that by now Valve would be aware of the ebb and flow of community sentiment towards them and would at least take that into account when making policy.

Three months ago I would have probably thought this more than reasonable. Three months from now I probably would have felt the same way. Right now it ticks me off a little bit.

                              Thanks for the comments.

Actually the issue doesn't stop at the LAN shop owners; licensing expenses jack up our overhead, which will in turn raise gaming rates. And yes, we might just stick with 1.5, heck we're running 1.3 servers here...

I just hope someone out there cooks up a CS MMORPG style game or something along those lines that run on open-source engines.

It's tragic that the Internet is turning into a capitalist cesspool where almost everyone's looking for ways to make more money

Thrombose, Ive ran US lan centers. Im not necissarily talking about foreign lans. The cost just to many a lan center alone while doing so within the range of US labor laws is a burden. Somone had mentioned a us center and the pricing, which is what I was refering too. It is extremely hard to balance expenses and hourly cost. Most people do not grasp the investment these places require, and I often had the problem of people coming in complaining about being a dollar more in comparison to a place with sub par equipment and illegal licensing and labor. Most of those places eventually go out of business since exploiting gamers to work for you will only last so long, and eventually you piss off your clients and all of the labor.

Also people keep mentioning sticking with 1.5. If your playing cs you either bought HL or Retail to run it, each of which fall under a special licensing agreement that you have to follow. If you do not already have this through valve, your not running legally. Buying retail games for lans is rarely legal licensing practice.
