    1. Note that VALVe only modified the Quake1/2 engines a bit, not very much. Also, they can not legally force all mods to become their property. Thats like saying if you created a music CD and burned it, its now the property of the CD manufactorer.

    2. VALVe created 1 game.... it was only a decent game, nothing to rave about.

    3. VALVe's going under and its just a matter of time before they release a statement. They've caused themselves way to many problems that could of been easily avoided.
    1. HL isnt using the quake engine, its using the HL engine. anything to do with quake is embedded in HL and gone. thats it, its the HL engine now. only very few portions of quake1/2 were licensed from ID. namely things like skybox system, sound/file caching (PAK/WAD files), coloured ligthing (quake2), in game models (MDL) + others i cant be bothered to remember. i dont think ID can legally do anything more. they cahrged valve for portions of q1/2 code, thats it.

And like i said, valve modified the EULA to include that every mod belongs to valve. look it up somewhere. it happened a long time ago. suspiciously around the time CS mods became very popular (AHL, CS, DOD, Firearms etc).

    2. ok thats your opinion. can i ask when you played it? the single player HL i mean. i played it when it first came out, on a k6-550mhz with a TNT graphics card, around the time when hardware accelerated graphics were looked upon with sheer amazement, as i did while i played HL. nowadays of course it seems dated i agree. during its time (1998), HL wasnt just a "a decent game, nothing to rave about", it was very much something to rave about, nothing has ever been done like that before.

    3. most ppl on these comment boards seem to have the knowledge of a business environment as if they are qualified for an MBA or something. even i havnt got that, yet.

valve are going the right way with steam. and something very very drastic has to happen for them to 'go under'. ie their offices being blown up. valve are not idiots, their game has stood the test of time.

Has anyone heard this from another source than iuk?

It seems to me it can't be true if only one site has heard of it.

"their game has stood the test of time."

only reason it stood the test of time is because of the mods.. remember, counter-strike wasn't made by valve, nor was dod.. valve only made 1 game thus far, and that's half-life.. they just "took over" the mods at one certain point so they could milk it in every way.

And how can a company take the ip rights away from some one? they released the tools for free.. so how can they take the right to take a mod for their own without any warranted pay toward the actual artist?

So say for instance (according to the valve owns all the mods comment): firearms (since it hasn't been published) goes to a new engine, say.. uh.. Unreal tech. Does that mean valve will actually go after that team and try to take it down because valve "owns" that mod because they used that engine for the free mod before?

If that's so, uh, i think that's kinda illegal, isn't it?

Actually, I think the toss states that they own the rights to sell the mods, in the meaning that if a mod team gets a company offering them xxx$ to sell valve carries the right to buy it instead. It is pretty standard. It means that if somthing comes up as being big they did not notice, they get a chance to sell it over somne elses offer or pass.

They can still have them and NOT pay the fee, if it is on a lan connection, they aren't charging to play the game, they are charging to upkeep the computers and the place you play at ( and/or internet cost if it is available ) a lan center shouldn't be any different then one of us going out and buying a copy of the game and installing it. Valve got money for the game already, plain and simple, if I owned a center and valve said this to me, I'd tell them to blow me.

I'm sorry but valve is beginning to make me more angry every day by all the pay-to-play crap I've been hearing about, I buy the game I'm not going to get charged to play it, sorry, this isn't a MMOFPS-RPG game or something.

yes, that is fine if you want to buy the game, and play it at home in your own time. but if u did what ur saying u would - buy 20 copies of the game and install them on your lan centres computers - thats illegal. since youre MAKING MONEY OFF VALVE'S game. which is the same as say subletting a house.

you rent a house from a landlord/agency for say $500 a month, you do it up for say $2,000, it looks all nice. then YOU let it to someone else for $1000 per month = subletting. thats illegal my friend. and what u said is almost identical to that.

youre getting pissed off with valve making more money, but this only affects lan centres, probably less than 0.1% of the entire user base. valve are hardly gonna make 'big bucks' on this.
