I am not suprised, valve is not the first to do this...

$1500 a year for ubisoft for up to 5 titles.

$1000 a year for blizzard per title.

and $2500 a year for sierra titles.

I was told this from a friend who is starting a lan center.

And it doesnt go by $10 a machine, you buy the title and you can put it on as many comptuers as you want, but only the ones at the lan center. They give you a special cd key that allows for one game to be put on several machines, kinda like windows xp corporate one key will work for with many machines.

And besides, why get mad? It only effects lan centers, not the consumer.

Also, they are probably doing this because their publishers are making them do it.

Well, it certainly doesn't PROMOTE CS in centers.

I think that was a bad move by valve.
Yeah me too... People aren't gonna wanna pay more for something they could probably pay at home!

All i have to say is that VALVe seems to be more intent on filling their pockets with cash now than sustaining the popularity of this great HL mod into the future.
Yeah VALVe hs been getting greedy lately! When are they gonna actually put a product out?

            Two options:

            1. We go into to bunker to avoid these comments.

            2. We lure all the comments into the bunker and then drop a tactical nuclear bunker-buster bomb on it.

"Valve is so greedy/stupid/gay." For making games for a profit, like EVERY SINGLE OTHER GAME COMPANY ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET. They offer the best support for the best game and it's still not enough. Dirty hippie ingrates.

Well said. I am guessing people have missed the point, this does not apply to you. They see valve and money charge in the same sentence and go off without reading the article.

As I say again from my comment from #15, this doesnt affect you unless you own a lan center.

This is not true. when did valve say this? wheres teh magic announcement? oh nowhere. nice trick myg0ts and valve haters.

valve will never! charge you for products you own already no matter where you play.

here comes teh quote from teh Steam site:
Very soon, we will post more detailed information for Cyber Café managers about the official Valve Cyber Café Program, including information on pricing (hint: $10 per computer per month & you don't have to buy the retail software), technical instructions for setting up Steam in cafés, security info, etc.
edit: and if it's true, who cares? gaming centers have $/Å?/€9999+ income a week, they can pay $100/comp/year that's not much for those rich ppl who have 20 or more computers.

Actually it would also affect the people that go to lan centers which includes me once in a while. If the lans have to pay more for licenses, they have to get that money from some where, so they raise prices.

This just further proves my theory that Valve no longer care about the community, and just want more cash. Steam isn't needed.... all it does is make it easier for Valve to get more cash (through buying games through Steam), and it's shafted the community. Now this will mean Valve get more cash... and it's shafted the community.

What ever happened to CS being a community-driven mod!?

But if you read my post in #15, other companies do the same thing. Its not cheap to do this and lan center owners should be prepared to cough up the money if they want to legally put the games on their machines. But if they dont want to pay, they dont have to put cs on their machines, its that simple. This is still something that lan center owners should worry about. Yeah, I guess it could be bad if centers stop playing cs, but they do this with every other game out there too. But this isnt stopping me from playing hl2 when it comes out because it doesn't effect me in anyway what so ever when I play it at home.

#25: Valve's publisher gets the money.

that league is just a bunch of cs-haters who can't appreciate good gameplay and oo & awe at special effects. The licensing fee really isn't very harsh or restrictive at all as some1 above has already explained. Like an $10 a month will kill a LAN center? Then again if I'm wrong and the fee is much higher overall this would really piss me off.

It is true, it has been mentioned on steampowerd actually. 10 dollar a month is a valve steam use license, 10 dollars per machine will get you access to valve games just like a typical steam user license was going to.

Ill tell you right now few if any lan centers follow licensing code fully. Most companies fail to relize that their games are not worth monthly what they ask for. Many "popular" titles barley make any money in lan centers, and are there mostly as a token gesture to the players so they have options. Blizzard has never made up their minds. Their initial feew were outrageous, then about a year later contacting their licensing department they told me to "just buy store copies" because they gave up on trying to do site licenses and lan shop regulation, then later they restructured their setup asking for more money.

10 a monther per machine for such a popular title is not bad at all. Any thriving store can pay off that license fee easily, however the problem comes when you realize this is one of the cheapest solutions and to be legal in total, some places would have to pay more per machine per month then they would make on average for that machine.
