Steam Replaces WON

I checked the FAQ and all it says is "Stop worrying about product updates and patches (they're all handled automatically!)", which is what I was concerned about. The only thread on the forums I found ( http://steampowered.com/forums/showthre...threadid=5501 ) contains little more than misinformation, no replies from Valve as far as I can tell. So, I emailed the Steam people at the support address, I may post in some thread if they get back to me.



I know, I know, I'm being paranoid and shit and Steam won't be the first system to do something like this but seriously, computer and Internet security is in such a sad state these days that you gotta be a bit careful..

this makes me sad. I used to like looking at a persons won ID and knowing about how long they played cs.



It often gave an explanation if they were doing really well (i think that long time cs players are less likly to cheat) and it was always cool to be able to type to a guy "you have the retail version eh?" and he would be all like "wtf" "how the hell did you know?" and its really just because his won ID told all....



now the only thing that will make me happy about the new numbers is if i get "1337" ... the only possibility other than that would be my old one, so that i dont have to rememner annother number.

As to the new Steam installer I think it'll be only a few MB at the most, might even be less than 1 MB. Since it just needs enough to install the executable and code to access the content servers and then downloads everything from that point.

When WON switches to STEAM or whatever happens there,



Will we be able to use 3rd party launchers to launch Counter-Strike or any Half-Life mods anymore??



Examples: GameSpy, Game Tiger, HLSW, All Seeing Eye , ect.

ASE already can interact with Steam, but it may be accessing the WON network for it's game information. I'm sure they'll have a filter to work with the new Steam at some point in the near future.

bad thing about steam is that it's ultra slow. takes 5X longer to join and build servers.....
