There will be a patch in a couple of weeks that converts the entire HL user base to Steam. 1.6 will be Steam only it seems. Also remember all this conversion is happening right before HL2 is released, as HL2 will also run on Steam for its updates and multiplayer.



Might be best not to worry about all the different things happening in the upcoming weeks until each event actually is implemented.



Steam beta ending, Steam final being released.

WON system being replaced with Steam system.

CS 1.6 beta ending, CS 1.6 final released.

Condition Zero released with CS 1.6 as the multiplayer component.

Half-Life and its mods being converted to run on Steam.

Half-Life 2 released, running on Steam for updates and multiplayer.

TF2 and CS2 eventually released.



etc, etc, etc.



No doubt all those changes would overload the casual HL gamer that may not even be aware of the conversion coming up.
