When they release the new steaminstall will the content servers (and more importantly for some the ability to create a new account and subsequently getting a low "steam ID") be online? Or will the "steaminstall" be released and then the content servers opened a little later? This could eliminate the leaked versions we have seen in the past, but then again the servers would get a massive amount of hits in the first minute they open it, so it could prove to be even worse.

this will probably be as smooth as the last couple steam - releases
omg so true. Im still abit wary if they have the bandwidth to support the entire Half-Life, Counter-Strike, DoD, community. Steam isn't exactly perfect speed atm. And so much for 1.6 being the last release using standard exe's, go figure.

the WON servers will probably be converted into steam servers, and the speed right now is because of all those background updaters and downloading movies that is going on..

                i know it sucks

Bushwacker you twit, hackers can have stolen/bought wonids that are very low and some people, such as myself, have high wonids but non-retail HL due to buying HL a long time ago (and getting CS only later).

But on a much more important note (I know no one will read this due to this being posted so late)... has anyone considered the security implications of Steam? How, exactly, does it go about downloading and installing stuff? What's the authentication system like? Does the user get a chance to accept/decline all updates? If there's a vulnerability it would make a nice distribution vector for malware. :|

Just read the FAQ over at the Steam website, about how it works...

If you bought HL or retail CS, you already paid for steam. No, you wont need to pay for updates - I have no idea where you heard that. You only have to pay if you want to buy a new game through steam (you own it forever) or if you want to use their subscription service (basically renting games).
