The words ON TOPIC seem to mean nothing to people engaged in petty arguments... Enough already, lest those with actual banning powers be displeased by your foolishness on a grave and serious topic.

Gun control is relevant to the topic at hand, as it's dealing with reasons behind a shooting.

To the guy saying that Canada has less shootings because of the tougher gun laws. This is true, in part, but hardly relevant. Canada has never had a high crime rate, even before gun legislation, but we'll ignore that also for now. In Canada, it's not difficult for someone to buy a hunting rifle with a nice scope. It's handguns that are difficult to get. And with the current sniper situation, it could easily be a high powered hunting rifle that he's using, we don't know for sure, just that it's a .223 caliber (5.56mm) rifle, and apparently a very accurate one. Point being, even with Canada's gun control laws, the same situation could easily occur.

As far as other gun legislation, I suppose it depends on the country you live in. Extremely strict gun control has been a very bad thing in Britain, where muggings have gotten out of hand, as theifs know their victims will not be armed. In many European countries, there have been situations where a lone gunman was able to wreak havoc, because none of the citizens were able to do anything against them.

In contrast, while not sensationalized by the news, in the US there are MANY situations where armed citizens stop criminals in the act. Florida is considered one of the worst places to try to steal a car, because well over half of the families living in that state are armed. (I remember a great section from a police log where they came out to apprehend a would-be car theif, lying on the ground with his arms stretched out, the owner of the car standing over him in boxers with a shotgun pointed down at him -- good times.)

Yes, there is a danger in letting all of the population over the set age limit own guns. However, the vast majority of the population uses these guns responsibly here in the States, and it's done our country more good than harm. If and when Joe American pulls out a handgun and blows away this crazed sniper, I'll be thankful once more that we have armed, responsible citizens in our country to help out before the police can arrive.

As far as the godmode thing... I think that's a case of the media trying to stuff this situation into the box they imagine it fitting into. As the case is, though, there is no god-mode in CS, so they picked the wrong "similarity" to attempt to relate the two. Even if CS did have a god-mode, it still wouldn't fit, but this just emphesizes how much further they're willing to stretch the facts to make their news into a sensationalized, fast selling story.

Yes, take ALL the guns, that's the solution. If one guy can kill someone with a rifle, ANYONE CAN! But... wait a minute. Lots of people have guns. Why aren't there lots of shootings? "But LuftWaffle, there are lots of shootings! It's in the NEWS!" The NEWS is sensationalist.
Dude there are fucking loads of gun related murders and crime in your country and you compare that to Europe and in Particular England, you find that the incidence of gun related crime is extremely small. Particularly so that the innocent civilian in the streeet will have most likely never seen a gun in their life...

That 'news' was terrible, the 'media' may suck but you gat to remmeber that this is the media too. Instead of grumblin be proactivce about issues. Only 40% of Americans bother to vote, and then you complain about the laws and the way your society won.. Many 'homeborn' Americans wouldnt even pass their own citizenship tests.. You can dodge responsibility for your governance, And so insome way everyone is responsible for what goes on in their environment.

What I cant believe is that asshole reporter is sayin tot he killer, hey the police are fucking with ya, and I dont care if I let you know cos I want some Pulitzer Prize shit...

              noooo!!! i love my guns!!!

if you outlawed guns then it would be even harder for the law abiding citizen to get one and criminals who have total disregard for the law woulnt care and the only ppl with guns would be the bad ones. so i think outlawing firearms is a retarded idea.

                All I can say is

                "Gotta love the Media eh?"

I mean hell this is the same media (CNN) that thinks KaZAA as a example is the greatest thing since sliced bread even though it has/had the BDE Trojan, Spyware, and virii related problems.

So it really doesn't suprise me that the media picked on Counter-Strike and, apparantly without researching and HEAVEN FORBID, actually d/ling CS 1.5 and trying it out on a random CS server (god know's there's enough CS servers..) they would have found out there is no "god mode".

Remember, this is the same media that blamed DOOM a few year's ago, and will likely start blaming console games in the future as well.

What's even more scary? Lots of ignorant parent's will suddenly start

taking CS away from sons and daughters because of some "fear" it may turn there kids into mindless killers. There are parents that stupid, for lack of a better word, out there...

                  ------------

*Sniper rifles removed due to people going psycho.

                  --

No but seriously, it's really scary with people like that running around and killing people... Could he/she have been affected by games? Yes. Movies? Yes. But that could not possible be only reason of a person freaking out like that. If they ever catch the guy (or gal for that matter) they need to find out what went wrong before they do whatever they have planned for that psycho...

The corrupt people did it again..just to get paid they go out and diss games..well if they gonna diss games they should at least diss it right, such as the supposed "God Mode" attempt..like if you play Unreal Tournament or the other precedents of it, it shows you, if you kill many then it says "GOD-LIKE"

Now what kind of BS is that?

I for one don't take any notice of what the media spouts out regarding the link of Computer Games and Violence. Most articles are very one sided and if there was a link then I am sure there would be too many cases as there is (Remembering that CS is THE most played online game)

I can see this going on for eternity and as mentioned in previous posts computer gaming is only being used as a scapegoat. Within a few days it will all die down anyhows.

I don't know if anybody's actually pointed this out, but the person involved in these crimes is NOT a sniper.

A sniper is a trained military/paramilitary weapons expert who carefully selects targets based on rank/importance, etc.

The person responsible for the shootings is a gunman - the media giving the title 'sniper' gives him an air of superiority and mystery that is DEFINITELY not deserved.

It also gives a bad name to all the snipers who work in the military and law enforcement, usually keeping crackerheads like him off the streets.

This case also highlights the alarming laxity in US gun laws - by all means be able to own almost any weapons you want, but at least make the application procedure more rigid, and the subjects more rigorously vetted by the authorities.

And before peeps start up the lame 2nd amendment stuff, actually read the amendment - it is for men of organised militias to bear arms. That is the Police and the Armed Forces, not any redneck who decides he wants to buy a 0.50 sniper rifle to keep the commies at bay.

The USA needs stricter gun laws (maybe not to the point that it is here in the UK), and this case is a perfect example why.

I am disappointed in the media and what they do for ratings. Why the games? There are movies about this stuff too. You can learn more about the guns and strategies by watching movies than you can by playing games such as Counter-Strike.

It's just sad how the media does anything to get their story and to make it popular.

i imagine it is terrifying in washington now becuase you never know, he might be behind the bushes or anywhere and the fear he/she is generating is huge. what do people do when they are afraid? why blame the unknown of course.

rather than moan about what the media thinks of FPS games mabye we should try and educate our ignorant media?

Last week NBC news had a story on how violent videogames were a cathartic activity for relieving stress. I guess not anymore. To quote Marshall Mathers, These games are only "sick as the mother f**kin' kid its behind." Maybe people should look at it that way, instead of blaming everything/one else for their problems.
Marshall Mathers is scared of a fucking dog hand-puppet. Quote someone who isn't a tool.
I'm sure it desensitizes us somewhat, but for the majority of us, we are stable people and can rationalize the difference between videogame fantasy and cold blood killing.
Uh-huh. And by what criteria do you consider yourself "stable"? There are plenty of people branded as "unstable" who haven't gone on rampages. Oh, and good luck finding a way to quantify "stability". Is "stability" just whatever the current majority is, or does it have a universal definition? What the hell am i asking a nimrod like you for?

Apparently people need an explaination, and they want one that blames it on things that are entertaining.
Who knows. Maybe we'll finally figure out if games ARE to blame or not by attaching a rock to a HL CD and throwing it in a river. If it sinks, it's satan!

People just want the ability to say "Nope, not me. Not my fault. Everything's A-OK, french fries and apple pie!". No one involved with that story seems too concerned with exactly WHY he did it. No one in this comments section seems too concerned with it either.

To be honest, there's two mindsets going on here that I cannot understand. One is that of the killer. I cannot honestly understand the mind of someone who is willing to kill random, innocent people. It doesn't make any sense, as that's a line of morality that you just don't ever cross.
Yeah, well, i can't understand the mind of someone who likes to listen to Andrew WK. Morality, morality, morality. What, exactly, makes you think that your "morality" is any more concrete than the people trying to blame games? I'm sure that less people would cross that line if anyone could actually figure out where the fuck it was.
The other is the mindset of someone willing to mislead others into blaming a convenient target for something they cannot understand. And it seems, more and more, CS has become the newest scapegoat, taking over where Doom left off, and so many others before it, as KhAoS pointed out.
Why not? It's got everyone else here frothing over it, doesn't it?

Sure. Something happens, blame CS. Never mind that there are most certainly other issues behind it.

well to be honest the first thing i thought about was some kid and cs. really. i think that some kids get to caught up with games and it can affect their lives, they do poorly in school, with family relations, and turn to video games as an escape. yeah maybe this could be related to a video game in some kind of minute way, but then cant we blame the media as well for their violent offerings nearly every evening?
People generally don't need an escape from things that don't suck. You just pointed a finger as much as anyone else has.
