I've got some issues with Steam ATM. Every server on my list have a ping of 250 & upwards from there. Usually, I have around 300 - 500 ping with my 0.5 MBit ADSL.... That's not right & now after re-installing Steam, CS locks up when I try to connect to a server (could be the weird ping!)
The pings shown after getting a new list are alot higher then they really are. Just refresh the list a few times will show the real pings.

The hitboxes were broken in CS 1.1 until 1.5 finally fixed them. The excess headshots are due to the random spray bullet physics inherent in CS, not hitbox size or location errors.
Heh, 1.5 didn't fix them either. Some things were tweaked, but they're definitely not right yet. If you want, I can probably figure out a way to get a demo to you I took a while back, with two computers hooked up to the same server. It's just of me shooting the idle player in different locations, and the resulting hits and such.

While other players have their pistols out, for instance, you can shoot a good foot and a half behind their head (from the side) and score a headshot. Tried it with everything from a glock at close range to a zoomed AWP, same result. There's other tweaky aspects, but that was the most obvious example.

interesting, but really, how much could be worked on? I guess artists' sketches and renderings and the like, but I would imagine that the bulk of the work would have to be done with more sophisticated technology than the old half life engine (i.e. the majority of cs2's production would have to be done well after hl2's release?)
It's based on the HL2 engine. In a magazine interview, VALVe (I think Doug Lambarti or whatever his name is specifically, but anyway) said that the "proof of concept" for the HL2 engine was completed late in 2002, and at that point they froze the engine in its current state. All new features were held off after that point for HL3. Now they're just working on creating levels, the storyline, and all that good stuff, which is all unnecessary for the development of CS2.

Anyway, point is that the tech to build CS2 has been around for a good while now, and even before the engine was fully completed Gooseman was at least working on modeling and such for it. We even got to see him modeling a HK G36 assault rifle for CS2 quite a while ago on a Canadian TV program. We don't know if CS2 will be released at the same time as HL2, but one can certainly hope. :)
anyone know how many cs1.x's are goign to be released? I would imagine that cs2 will probably be at least another year in the making.
They already said CS1.7 was the last "major" update to CS. That doesn't mean there couldn't be a CS1.8, but if there is one, it's not going to be changing much of anything, but rather just fix minor bugs. Chances are good that CS1.7 will be the last update, though. Supposedly the M60 will be added in that release, but we'll see if that's the case or not.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. The actual in-game pings are definitely lower than what you see on the server browser. I've also noticed that when you refresh, it often gives you some random number for the ping, then a number extremely close to that one the next time you refresh. On the third try, it starts getting close to the real ping, and by the fourth it's about right. Odd.

Will 1.5 still work after 1.6 comes? Will there still be servers and stuff?

Anyone can still run a 1.5 server, it's just if anybody will WANT to run a 1.5 server. (1.5 sux compared to 1.6)

aside from the fact that they announced it would be on a new engine, what other engine could it possibly be on?

I believe CS2 will have the DOOM3 engine but possibly also a mix between quake3 and UT2003 enigine
