  • Game Industry: Sega Cuts 300 Jobs, Joystiq Closes, Monty Oum Hospitalized, Andrew Yoon Passes Away

It hasn't been a great day today in the gaming industry. In fact, you may even say that this might be one of the worst days for the industry in recent memory.

It was announced earlier that AOL is cutting about 150 jobs. This means that Joystiq, as we knew it, will effectively cease operations. What remains of Joystiq will then be integrated into Engadget.

It was also announced today that Sega will cut around 300 jobs as part of a "restructuring" process. The company is making the move as they see the industry moving towards a more digital future.

We wish the best of luck to all persons affected by these layoffs and closures.

Continuing with today's bad news, Rooster Teeth's Monty Oum has been hospitalized with a "medical emergency." Details are scarce but Burnie Burns informs the Rooster Teeth community that Oum is in critical care and it is "not known if he will recover." Oum works as an animator with the company, helping to animate and create some of their most popular series that include Red vs. Blue and RWBY. A fundraiser has been created to help with medical costs and family support. We hope for a speedy recovery for Monty.

Earlier today, word broke Andrew Yoon passed away from an unfortunate accident. You may remember Yoon for his work at Shacknews and Joystiq. He then decided to pursue a career creating games, having created Divorce The Game, a two-player card game. He was also a prominent figure on the Weekend Confirmed podcast. Our condolences go out to the friends and family of Andrew.
