GDC Revokes Pioneer Award from Nolan Bushnell Following Public Outcry

Every year, the Game Developers Choice Awards recognizes people that have had a significant influence in the industry for one reason or another. The recognition comes in the form of the Pioneer Award and is given to those that have "developed a breakthrough technology, game concept, or gameplay design at a crucial juncture in video game history." This year, the award was to be given to Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell. However, once this news broke, GDC was flooded with concerns and a fair bit of outrage from the gaming community. It was then that GDC organizers we...

  • Jim French, Voice Actor Known for Left 4 Dead, Dota 2, and Half-Life 2 Has Passed Away

Jim French, the voice actor behind Bill in the Left 4 Dead games, passed away on December 21 at the age of 89.

French brought a force and a life to Bill that immediately made him my go-to choice any time my friends and I played a game of Left 4 Dead. He continued to breathe life into Bill for a special mission in Payday.

French also provided the voice for Father Grigori in Half-Life 2. He was the lone Fisherman in Half-Life 2: Lost Coast. Dota 2 players will know him best as the voice of the Elder Titan. Back in 1959, long before acting in g...

  • Former Naughty Dog Employee, David Ballard, Claims He was Sexually Harassed by Lead in 2015

David Ballard was an environmental artist and level designer throughout most of the Uncharted series in addition to The Last of Us. I say "was" because Ballard parted ways from Naughty Dog in 2016, though it seems as though he did not leave on friendly terms.

He says he was fired from Naughty Dog after suffering a mental breakdown in early 2016 as a result of being "sexually harassed at Naughty Dog by a lead" in late 2015. He states that Sony tried to buy his silence about what happened to him. I'll let his own words speak for themselves on the matter. ...

    Arkane Studios President Leaves Company

Raphael Colantonio, the President of Arkane Studios, announced his departure from the company today. To cut off any poorly thought out conspiracies right out of the gate, Colantonio says right out of the gate that he's leaving in order to spend more time with his son.
The last 18 years have been an amazing adventure - from starting Arkane in 1999, to making our first game, Arx Fatalis, to joining ZeniMax Media in 2010 and releasing the Dishonored series and Prey to critical acclaim - it is time for me to step out to spend some time with my son and reflect

Ashley Judd Slams Game Industry for Profiting Off of GamerGate and Misogyny

As part of a recent TED Talk about the abuse of women online, actor Ashley Judd dedicated a segment of her 15 minute talk towards the hypocrisy of the gaming industry. She began by talking about the abuse she endures every day online simply for being a woman. She explained the effects the abuse has had on her and offered up insight on the trauma many women endure every day online. Judd says that she has periodically been the target of a "cyber mob" that has sent her countless rape and death threats. It has gotten to the point where she had to get someone to go thr...

  • Game Industry: Sega Cuts 300 Jobs, Joystiq Closes, Monty Oum Hospitalized, Andrew Yoon Passes Away

It hasn't been a great day today in the gaming industry. In fact, you may even say that this might be one of the worst days for the industry in recent memory. It was announced earlier that AOL is cutting about 150 jobs. This means that Joystiq, as we knew it, will effectively cease operations. What remains of Joystiq will then be integrated into Engadget. It was also announced today that Sega will cut around 300 jobs as part of a "restructuring" process. The company is making the move as they see the industry moving towards a more digital future. We wish th...
