Hands-on With Battlefield 1943, Iwo Jima Footage

So far, at least four different sites have managed to grab some hands-on time with the upcoming Battlefield 1943. Eurogamer has a nice two page spread that outlines the key changes made to the game since 1942.
Never mind Bad Company - welcome to Dimwit Company. Nobody's talking to one another - hardly surprising, since the guys to either side of me are Italian, French and Spanish - and once the landing craft hit the beach, we've all regressed by about seven years. Italy's landed a biplane upside down on an anti-aircraft gun, and I'm stuck fast in a trench. In a tank.

Battlefield 1943 may be simplified - three maps, three classes, one objective - but the key word is accessibility, not casual. There's a tutorial this time - the first in the series, rather unbelievably - that introduces you to the concepts offline and then lets you practice in planes and tanks unmolested by hostiles. There are facilities for private matches, clans and squads, and there are levelling and reward systems (Achievements/Trophies and a broader range of honours beyond that, although no unlocks), but for the majority of people approaching the game from scratch, it's a one-click process to start playing, and it's not difficult to understand what's going on. You pick an infantryman, rifleman or scout class and then choose where to spawn. But it's still Battlefield, and it still punishes you for pratting around.
More hands-on impressions come from GameSpot, Team Xbox, and InsideGamer.nl (translated URL).

If that weren't enough for you, there are new videos showcasing previously unreleased footage of the game and interviews with the game's developers. Here's the first glimpse at the Iwo Jima map from Battlefield 1943.

Gamereactor has two additional videos. One is a brief overview of Iwo Jima and a short discussion about what to expect in 1943, and the other is an interview with Patrick Liu.

The ingame footage is a lot better. They fixed the bright colors so I am excited about that. I am not a fan of the no iron sight for infantry class, but I do like the look and sound of the sniper rifle.

Thanks for posting this, Zips, I'm not at my best today

Few things that caught my eye:
        • Squad system will be improved compared to the one in Bad Company
        • "There are facilities for private matches, clans and squads..."
        • "We have designed the levels now with 24 in mind, but that's not hard-coded. You can always squeeze in more players," Liu says when we ask about the PC version.
        • You can see in the video that buildings can indeed be totally leveled, when he sends bombers to that beach

and, he says the game is downloadable only - which means no hardcopies (if that wasn't already known)

I give it props it does looks good now but i still not thrilled with only 24 players and only 3 maps.

I like the WWII-styled spawn menus and capture announcements. Little touches like that are great, even if they don't affect gameplay much. :)

I'm okay with the lack of ironsights since it's more of a accessible Battlefield that's easier to play, you already have regenerating ammo and health, so I view this game as a more realistic version of Heroes, and try not to compare it to the other BF games.

The minimap's in a weird place for me. I'm just too used to it being on the top right.

Thats some good news, higher player count for the pc. Seems like their trying to make a console version and a pc version. *gasp*

Squads have been implemented again so thats a plus as well, i gotta say i do like where this is going. I did hear the exact same death sounds as Bad Company, and the "cross hair" is the same.

I hope it's Steam, not just the damned EA downloader!

The Gamespot article also speculates on price range:

As of now, EA hasn't announced any pricing for Battlefield 1943. It's described as a "premium" download, so we'd guess the price will be somewhere in the $15-20 range. Of course, that's just speculation, so we'll have to wait for the official word.
As for ironsights, that doesn't bother me. Remembering back to the days of MOHAA/SH, none of the weapons had ironsights, and they were fantastic games in multiplayer...they could be both fast-paced, and tactical. Sometimes, less is more.

Bad Company 1's. I guess they were fine with it in that game, so they kept it there for 1943.
