We were hacked. Several times over the past two weeks, in fact.
While all passwords are encrypted and salted, it's recommended that you change your password here when you can.
They should had modified their installer so it keeps their previous copy AND add an icon to uninstall 1.40.
I could easily write it in a few lines in InstallShield.
Remember, this is EA, trying to challenege everything and make it as hard as possible to do the simplest things like creating a new directory for the beta.
It's not as hard as it seems to create a own folder to backup your 1.3. But on the other hand it keeps the noobs away from using the beta . I for example didn't play 1.3 for weeks because of the gameplay bugs so it is not this hard for me to only be able to play 1.4 afterwards :). And 1.4 is inevitable so you can get used to it a bit sooner. But I also kept a copy of my 1.3 install, because the 1.4 final will patch against 1.3 or 1.x not against 1.4 beta 2 or beta 1. Why? Because even beta 2 full wasn't able to patch the 1.4 beta 1 install.
For me the installation of the beta is a lesser problem then the fact that there is no proper bugtracking system available.
I tested both of the Novalogic's Joint Operations games (JOTR and JOE) along with hundreds of other testers. We were given the beta months before retail release and had a seperate installer for each version.
The beta was one or two generations ahead of the retail version that was kept seperate so that you could play on ranked servers. The NDA was the limiting factor between the current RETAIL and BETA versions.
Sure it took some disk space but both versions were kept totally seperate from the actual store bought copy already running on the machine. I had no problems what so ever during that experience.
I expected that this BF2 Beta to include a self installer sheild as well. I guessed wrong. My computer is already groaning with the weight of the retail BF2 on aging hard drives and I will NOT try to stamp out a new copy because I KNOW something will be FUBAR before it is completed.
Hate to rain on anyone's parade but I am protective of my poor bairns in that case under the desk.
The failure of EA/DICE to create a Seperate installer (Install sheild) and keeping the Beta totally seperate than the retail caused many players to find themselves unable to play after installing the beta.
People dont want to twist in agony thru reams of instructions and step by step across forum posts while reading that "OH It's SIMPLE, I HAD NOT PROBLEMS" from the multitudes of the more gifted computer people.
We simple phesants need a little TLC if you want stuff to work on our machine. One rule in the computer world "Make it idiot proof so that it will execute in face of user errors."
I played the beta for awhile. Prolly 5 daysish. I responsed on the EA forums(which break down every 10 minutes) As stupid as it may sound. If it's not ranked(which I am not sure if it is or not, part of the problem in itself.) people don't want it EA/Dice/Colin. I'm very sorry to see you guys think its a failure but hay you made your own monster didn't ya.
12) Commander is able to spot an enemy even without Scan or UAV. He should have spotting ability only while scan is in progress. When scan is over and info about enemy had disappeared, he should not be able to spot enemies until next scan/UAV.
No. 12 there isn't a bug, it's just visual spotting.
Here are some more.
67. Friendly vs. friendly vehicle collisions, the strongest vehicle is blamed, but the fastest is nearly always at fault.
68. Players can leap from a vehicle at the last minute and the empty vehicle doesn't cause a tk, but just a suicide.
69. Snipers shouldn't be able to snipe friendly pilots.
70. Players walk past a burning wreck which explodes, unfairly giving the ex driver a tk.
71. Sometimes when reloading the animation plays out but the gun isn't reloaded, and the whole sequence is repeated with a successful reload second time around.
72. UAV and scan can spot prone motionless snipers, unfair.
73. Ability to throw useful items (ammo, medkits) nerfed when C4 chucking nerfed, put it back to v1.
74. (edit on 24/08/06) There are some invisible structures that helos and jets can smash into above the docks on Dragon Valley.
I won't be beta testing for DICE. They've basically told me to stuff off with all my ideas and bug reports for a year now, and they expect me to test new sh!t I don't want while refusing to fix bugs, WTF?

No offence, but with advice like that it's no wonder they told you to "stuff off"

It's fair enough. The class based on stealth isn't stealthy, simple. Also sniper is my least favoured class, the suggestion is for fairness and reality only.
These aren't my suggestions either, they're a mix of bugs and needed changes.
