The "GPU" war ended when nVidia released the 78xx-series GPu. ATi's Crossfire and x1xxx series cards failed to perform on a level with SLI and the 7800s. Best investment for the money right now are dual 7800GTX in an SLI format. Will cost you $1000-1300 for good-quality components, but you'll have a machine that's just about future-proof.
My current specs are:
P4 2.4gHz
1gb Kingston DDR 2700
ATi Radeon X850XT Platinum.
I run at 1024x768 with everything on Medium and draw distance at 100% without trouble. The only reason I don't go higher are lack of RAM (BF2 is happy with 2gb, would be stellar with 4gb).
