Actually you can blow up enemy assets with your artillary, it just takes about 4 attempts.

But just using common sence you would know that if a bullet is going in at an angle away from you, it will rocochet away from you more!

    \/ sort of thing

i doubt there is ricochet. Takes too much processing power. Nades boune off collision boxes AND have basic physics properties that can resolve a trojectory...thats different and happens alot less frequently.

I would have thought bullets are far more optimised (and limited). Travel in simple lines and return a collision true or false and a location.

Taking surface normal and doing dotproduct calculations and every bullet would take loads of processing power.

If BF2 does actually do ricochet...well done again Dice.

There were ricochets in Desert Combat (i.e. shoot a tank with a MG and watch it spray off it)

            ...because...?

There are no physical ricochet in BF2. Tank shells explode and cause a visual effect showing parts/dirf flying through the air. Weapon fire at various surfaces cause a visual effect that resemble ricochets. Appart from splash damage there is nothing even close to ricochets in BF2.
Have someone stand next to a wall and so single fire at the wall... does the guy get hurt? no.

The best example is in IVFluid's sig. True not all rounds ricochet, but alot do. It depends on the surface that you hit with the round. Standard non-ap rounds striking armor at a particular angle will ricochet. For example spawn as support and fire at a tank with a teammate standing next to it. Chances are if you fire at the right angle you will hit your teammate with some of the rounds.

I think this is turning into another bullet drop type argument.

The only ricochets in BF2 are from the BH miniguns, ever notice that you can kill people round corners with it?
As far as i am aware no other guns in BF2 ricochet in the slightest.

                  Re: Ricochets: Confirmed!

After months of wanting to test ricochets, I finally got round to it last night. I went right up to a tank and unloaded my clip. NOTHING. use my remaining clips, in different positions and still nothing.
Ricochets don't happen. Bollocks to the manual, its wrong.

Now back to business. Splash damage may be calculated with the BH minigun impacts, however, like I have already said several times: the splash damage effect is too miniscule to be able to have an effect on you given the test parameters I layed out in my first post. The distance from the bullet impacts on the ground to the person in the blackhawk firing the minigun is just too great to actually register as splash damage. If it were actually splash damage, you would also be able to damage the blackhawk (which is much closer to the "splash damage"). However, if you run the test (which most people have not) you will see that this is not the case. Not only that, but when you die after running this test you will NOT hear the earringing effect that you get when you receive explosive damage. My conclusion is still ricochets. The angle that you are aiming at is probably impossible for ricochets to occur in real life, but this is a game. The same people that gave us crappy AA missiles also gave us ricochets.

Yes yes, bitvomit, you've definitely proved your point. We all officially think your an a$$hole, and a hard-headed, stubborn one at that. If you want to think ricochet is the cause of your death in the blackhawk far be it from me to shatter the realities of the world you live in. Don't bother replying to this post, as you've made a spot on the highly coveted ignore list.

                          It's just the splash damage.

                          Here's another theory:

The "ricochets" outlined by the "one-shot-kill" tank demonstrations aren't ricochets at all, but the result of the projectile's collision mesh coming into contact with multiple adjacent faces of the target's hitbox.

Most impacts only register with one face of the target's hitbox, but in nooks and crannies where sections of the hitbox meet, it creates a concave area where a projectile can actually strike more than one area with only one projectile, dealing damage twice.

                          Just an idea.

So what? DICE simply didn't implement the "ringing" effect for this so that it gives you the impression that the minigun "bullet" actually hit you. This splash damage is simply to make the minigun more effective against infantry and easier to hit from a moving copter. There's a samekind of damage-area with APC hits.

Then how do you explain the splash damage not damaging the blackhawk?
