Re: My 5 year old daughter plays!

Bad parent? I say good parent - he is at least showing interest in his child and spending time with her. Granted at 5yrs old it might be better being outside playing a game or doing a puzzle - but who's to say it was not raining or this was just a break from her doing calculus or something like that.

I think it is great - even if the game is rated mature - maybe his kid can handle it. Lord knows there are enough 20 something people out there that are still nursing their mom's teet on the weekend.

      Christ.......

I shudder at the violence in Bf2. I mean when i hear that spanking sound, and look up and my team mate has dust flying off of him everywhere, i start crying.

Give me a break, there is no blood, there is no dismemberment, only dust. There is not a damn thing wrong with letting his daughter play. As someone said in a an earlier post here, if there is proper parenting, it wont be an issue. Even so, whats the worst case senario here, she runs around with a wrench and tries to fix the satelite dish at home? Because unless he has a house full of grenades, Sraws, Eryx, DAO-12's, and combat knives i think they are safe.

I agree in the fact that games enhance hand eye coordination, logic, and problem solving, not cold blooded murder.

My 6 year old son enjoys Quake 3, and he is quite good, but at night i have to lock the Rail Gun cabinet, or i fear we would all be gibbed.

As long as you don't start buying her 50cent CD's and taking her to Ultimate Fighting championships I would say you are doing a great job as a parent. BF2 is really pretty vanilla when it comes to violence. Even though lately I have contemplated calling artillery strikes on the people I work for.

The thought of a 5 year old girl laying down supressing fire with with a PKM is pretty hilarious.

I’m a little bit confused! Are you joking or maybe I’m still dreaming! I can not belief what are you talking about!

CS, BF, DOOM, etc. are definitely no games for children…

By the way… “Bowling for Columbine” is a very nice movie for the “older” kiddies in this forum!

Having a five year old playing a game where you kill people. Great.

Exactly right. Half of you dudes up on the soapbox that don't even have kids yet -> kindly STFU. Its his job to raise his kids, not yours. All of you were exposed to lots of the same stuff growing up. Honestly, what's the major story line in every Tom and Jerry or Bugs Bunny cartoon? Hell, most kids think that if you get shot in the face with a shotgun, it just turns your fur black but you'll be okay.

My 7 yr old daughter loves flying and driving around in these games too. (She finds the jets in BF2 a bit too fast and prefers the Stukkas in BF42). The two things she likes about 3D shooters are the graphics (come on, even little girls think little girl games suck) and sitting by my side for an hour doing something together.

I would agree that kids' sense of reality is different than adults. But this is not just in terms of killing, it includes the concept of death too. When shot down in a jet, she's upset because she has to respawn and wait to fly again - not concerned because she virtually died (or worse, was actively killed by a stranger). If she bombs somebody - she'd made them have to "redo their turn" (so she says) as part of the game. She doesnt make the connection that she's "killed" somebody. Kids love rules and boundary conditions, and this falls under that category.

So, if you let your child believe Wiley Coyote can blow himself up with dynamite and be okay because its only a cartoon, I dont see the difference letting a kid C4 one of you tards and assume you'll still be okay because its only a game... Anyways, that five year old is going to grow up fast and he'll lose her to several layers of goth make-up, locked bedroom doors and some punk named Doobie who drives a sports car so leave the poor bastard alone already.

Re: My 5 year old daughter plays!

I'd trust the parents to know what is good/bad for their children. In most cases (not all but certainly in the majority) the parent knows what they are doing with their children.

I've taken my 4 and 6 year-old daughters to watch the new Harry Potter film in the cinema. It's rated here as a 12A meaning children over the age of 12 or with parents/adults permission. I knew that they would be fine with the film even though the youngest was three times younger than the recommendation. They loved it.

On the other hand I didn't take them to see Star Wars Ep III just because I considered the ending with Anakin on fire screaming and shouting hate something they could do without seeing.

I think there are lots of things children can be exposed to that may be dangerous and or frightening as long as it is packaged right and is entertaining/informative and screened by the childrens parents. They know their children best of all and what they can reasonable handle.

In some cases I would suggest that people that sheild their children too much are doing more harm than good.

Re: My 5 year old daughter plays!

I'm going to offer an opinion from the other perspective.

I'm a mother of an 8 year old girl who loves UT2k4, and has played Ravenshield a few times; however, as of late she's been playing more of Madagascar and Lemmings. My biggest fear isn't what type of game she's playing, it's the pervs online. She will NOT go into a gaming server any time soon on her own. However, once I finish building her computer I may allow her to come into a server ran by my current and/or ex clanmates and friends who will respect she's my daughter and cease the inappropriate talk, but only when I'm in there as well.

Also, as long as you do a good job of teaching your children what's right/wrong/fiction/non-fiction then I don't see a problem with the games.

                    Also..

My son has been playing since DC, he's 5 now. He's not a fan of BF2 and would rather play q4 dm or q3 dm. I have a pic someplace of him flying a helo in DC.

He doesn't play online cause he doesn't need to. Most of the time when we play a FPS he's playing with me or against me. Kind of funny when he start's talking smack to me.

So the concept of bad parenting is a myth, eh? I guess it's all false propaganda spread by jealous, childless people no doubt.

The world is filled with idiots, morons, and in the spirit of this forum, noobs, so tell me. How is it that when these same people become parents, they are suddenly transformed into sensible, intelligent, wise human beings with good common sense that they previously never had? Did they take a pill or something? What?

Same way that a new mother who has never had any experience with children whatsoever suddenly knows how to change a diaper, breastfeed, and tell the difference between her children's crys. It's something that just clicks. Yes there are parents out there that sensibility never comes around. But, there are a lot worse off things a parent could be letting their children do. Gaming is the least of a parents problems.

Listen Vaskania - your talking about instincts that has developed since the very beginning of humanity - insticts that even animals have. This is a bit more complex as its only recently that you have this high level of reality in games with violent content.

I think we all agree that they can play games, but the debate here is about 5 yearolds playing 16+ rated games with violence that by the majority of the studies on this issue is found to be harmfull to small children - thats why its rated 16+ in the first place. Theres a huuge amount of games that is made for any age out there - they wont miss out on games just cause you spare them the violence until they grow up a bit.

Should people just disregard all the studies done by professionals, and just not say anything if the parents dont care to figure out properly about the effects of violent games on children? That sounds a bit odd to me.
