We were hacked. Several times over the past two weeks, in fact.
While all passwords are encrypted and salted, it's recommended that you change your password here when you can.
Changed my video settings to 1024x768, 2x AA (was 1280x1024, 4xAA), everything else on high, and fps went from 25-40 fps in SF Maps to about 55-70 fps. On regular BF2 went from 45-50 fps, to 70-90 fps.
Did not really notice any visual difference in graphic quality, but game play was a huge increase in performance. After the change the difference in the SF Maps was amazing, and there maps are all that I play. Hope this helps!
I manage to play BF2 in 1280x1024, 2xAA with Medium settings no problems, but Special Forces is real jerky. So I might try those settings myself.
Guys, the problem I'm trying to define here is not a simple FPS drop. Of course, if you lower your resolution and AA / AF settings you will get better FPS.
My system performs very similarly at 1600x1200 with 4xAF and settings on high, as at 1280x960 with most settings on medium / low.
What we're after is the cause of the stuttering and sudden drops in framerate which never used to exist. Its a problem introduced with the new patch, and so far all I can see is its something to do with memory / sound or the way BF2 is managing its processor time.
I will update the original post with my own and others findings so far, please keep posting if you manage to improve your performance.
EDIT: Another thing ive just considered is it could be changes to the LOD system, i'll try fiddling with that tonight if I get time.
Agreed, this has much more impact and is actually dropping some people (including me) from the servers
Same here too. Get fine performance with Counter Strike, so not local to my DSL line. Only happened after the patch and SF install, before then it was fine
Just played on a 64 player UK BF2-SF server (Warlord map) and it played perfectly for about 20 minutes and then everyone started getting serious lag and stuttering. I carried no playing anyway to see if it would kick me but it took almost about 10 minutes before it did. This is either a memory leak in the 1.12 patch or something is wrong with the servers.

This could also just be that the server itself was unstable and nothing to do with BF2...
Something else strange i get, dunno if anyone else gets it - i can never connect to a BF2 server first time i load hte game up.
It will fail then work on second attempt, usually if i disconnect from that server and connect to another it'll work fine, i rarely get disconnected from servers though - if ever. Anyone else get this strange problem since 1.12?
Well, there is hope at least with the amount of fuss we are kicking up DICE/EA will have to divert more resources into producing a fix.
On a side note, I'm purchasing another GB of RAM (so = 2gb), not just because of these BF2 problems but i've wanted 2gb for a while now.
I'll update the post with how it affects BF2 performance post 1.12 when i get it :)

I'll do the same.
And, my little side note:
I got a geforce 6600 gt with 128 mb. The AGP aperture size in my bios was set to 128mb. Yesterday i set it to 256mb and i recognized that this "unnormal" stuttering has gone. The performance is still worse compared with vanilla bf2, but i think that setting made it better.
Maybe some of you try it and post the results...

you should defently have 2gigs of ram for this game, thats a must, I have 2 gigs but Iam still getting the 15-30 fps on mostly night maps, I'll try lowering my res, maybe the new patch has bugs on higher res

That depends on how much system RAM you have. If someone has 1.5GB RAM and SF is eating about 1.5GB, then doing this may make performance worse.
well, I finally fixed my low FPS by lowering my res ingame to 1024x768@85
after reading so many posts of people just lowering the res to fix there problem, I think the new patch caused bf2 & SF to run poorly at higher res like I usally run 1600x1200@75, hopefully they will released a hotfix to get us back running at the high res but for now, I dont drop bellow 35fps EVER on 1024x768@75

More RAM will not improve your framerate, it will remove stuttering however
