I statred to get this tonight; After the third time I Crtl-Alt-Del, no response, then Alt-Tab and BF2 minimised. I saw an error message about something being amiss in Sys32, and that everything was shutting down in 30 seconds.
It looked remarkably like that MS Blaster thing that was tormenting us all when we installed XP for the first time. I don't know whether this is legit or not, but its not happening in other programs as MS Blaster did.
Does this help at all?

Someone did figure out in the EA forums that this only happens when you join servers that are running Punkbuster. So now we're waiting for a punkbuster update.

It seams after looking around a few other forums that the consensus of opinion is that it is down to pb. Most people are saying if they go onto a non pb server and turn pb off as well then they are not getting any problems. Haven´t tried it myself so cant comment as I couldnt find any non pb enabled servers with people on them so I didn´t think it was a good test on an empty server but if anyone does get a game going on a non pb server and it runs ok can you post to say.

And like has been said there was a PB update yesterday.

I have been having the problem and after a little research firmly believe it is caused by punkbuster. When going to their site, you can see that they have "updated" punkbuster several times in the past two days. I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor.

I have been unable to contact EA regarding this problem. However, here is some info:

well i started up BF2 again and it all worked out fine no freezing or stoping. it only happened twice to me and has been working fine science about 30 min. ago.

You guys have no idea how happy I am to see that other people have been having this problem. I just got BF2 today and I've been worried that it's all unsolvable. I was going to be very, very upset if I couldn't play.

I updated every single driver on my system, (not that I'm complaining, I should've done that anyway) reinstalled about five times, cursed a whole lot, and searched every other forum on the internet until I found this. Here's hoping that we can get this sorted out soon.

My system:

AMD 64 3200+ on a Chaintech NForce4 Ultra board
1gb Corsair XMS
70GB Raptor Drive (which BF2 is installed on)
ATI X700
DirectX9.0c
All drivers at their most recent updates.

Im pretty sure that the EA Offcial UK servers run PB enabled. I just tried again and I no longer get the lockups. All I changed is:

- remove detonators (the right way with driver cleaner, safe mode etc)
- install detonators 78.01 WHQL

I also contacted EA support, provided all details, included link to this topic and you guessed it: standard reply about freezes. If you dont bother reading why bother having tech support...


Works fine now. And to BMas get a grip with the 64bit cpu bs, 80% of gamers got amd's today and 20 are here complaining about a problem so I seriously dont see any connection. GL with your PHAT barton.......

I don't no what's happend but got up this morning and every thing is ok no more freezeing probs. i no nothing about computers so i have or would not change anything hope you guys get it sorted out.It still only let's me play on a few servers tho pb keep's kicking me i have updated my pb and this sill happens it has done this before but then it whent ok hope this sorts it sell out to.

Its a problem with AMD...what it is I don't know...I can't pin it down yet.

I´ve been having both freezes and reboots it seams I can sometimes get online for a while but when the map changes or restarts then wham no more game weather its a freeze or a reboot or once a blue screen with nothing on it??

Oh yeah first thing I did today was update the drivers from ati

Me started to have these symptoms on sunday. Continued on monday...
Happens only when spawn screen is on, choocing squad/kits etc..
Can happen right away when joining a game, or after 1 hr
And ave no clue what so ever what to do.
Servers where i play are ranked and run punkbuster, if it counts...

Now, this problem has not happened to me yet...but a buddy of mine and I were both playing fine last night with no lockups.

I'm AMD and he's Intel. We both have nVidia graphics cards.

I don't know why it's only affecting certain people...it's a puzzle.

Has anybody tried uninstalling PB and re-installing PB yet?

I haven't because I'm not having the problem.

My third friend who IS having the problem found that deleting his cache didn't work...uninstalling and re-installing his video card drivers using Driver Cleaner didn't work... Well, I'll have him try deleting his My Documents\Battlefield 2 folder. It's a common fix for MANY problems, but I doubt it'll help this one.
