    Re: Weird freeze problem

To save some people a lot of trial and error - this is what i have tried without any luck.

    - system restore 3 days back
    - changed video, audio and mobo drivers versions using drivercleaner PRO
    - deleted my documents\battlefield 2 folder and retrieved account
    - UNDERclocked both CPU and GPU (heat issues)
    - Tried running BF2 at various resolutions with different video options
    - disabled all eye candy AA/AF
    - Updated and did everything possible with punkbuster
    - uninstalled network card and tried using onboard LAN

+ a lot of other things. Haven't tried formatting yet though.

One thing that strikes me though - i can play Kubra Dam for a couple of minutes as the only map. All other maps crashes the comp within 12 secs.

Nice work Sacuni, but the only thing to do is sit and wait for a new punkbuster release. Keep checking here:

Once they release a new version do a manual PB update. Some days they release two updates in the same day, so I'm not sure why it's taking them so long to fix this junk.

        UPDATE - i'm back on the battlefield :) :)

Got back from work today, searched the forums worldwide and did this:

        In this exact order

1 - turned of my pc and ROUTER (everything) and waited for 10 mins.
2 - downloaded pbweb to the battlefield 2\PB folder
3 - ran pbweb.exe and let it do its stuff
        4 - deleted the entire my documents\battlefield 2 folder
5 - started BF2 and retrieved my account (no big deal) takes 2 secs.
6 - changed video and sound options to this:

        GFX

        Resolution: 1280x960@75hz
        Terrain - high
        effects - low
        geometry - high
        textures - high
        lighting - medium
        dynamic shadows - medium
        dynamic lighting - low
        4xaa
        texture filtering - high
        view distance - 100

        SOUND

        Hardware high quality
        voip - disabled

        network

        256 or better

7 - Quitted BF2 and deleted the cache folder under MODS
8 - restarted battlefield and let it do its optimization stuff when entering a
        game.

Presto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now it runs great again

Video drivers: ATI 5.10 with aniso set to 4x, aa to app preference and vsync off.

I'm back ... works like before ... no crashing at all

Forget about logics here - it's beyond me

          Re: Weird freeze problem

pbweb.exe is probably what did it.

I run it every time before I play BF2.

            Re: Weird freeze problem

I'm bumping this up since I'm still getting the freezing problem even after all the recommendations I've read in this thread. What's funny is that I've ALWAYS had a random freezing and locking problem almost since day one of owning this stupid game. However after updating PB, it's now more frequent and it happens within a few seconds of joining a multiplayer match. Anyone hear if PB addressed this issue?

              Re: Weird freeze problem

If you've always had the freeze problem then this thread probably isn't apprpriate. The freeze problem for most of the users in here started on Sunday 30th October, after the Punkbuster Update.

Has anyone solved their problem. I see a few said that it went away?
As of Monday night mine was still doing it. Last night (Tuesday) I got back in the evening and updated PB with the pbweb.exe. I managed to play the game with no problems. But I had been in contact with someone at Even-Balance and after doing some tests for them they had mailed me a test PB folder. I then used this one...and was able to play with no problems.
Of course I don't know if they changed the PB files that your game downloads (becasue I used the pbweb.exe) and thats what fixed it, or if the problem just 'went away'.
I mailed them back to say I was using the test one they sent me and it worked fine.
              Anybody elses fixed?

My problems just went away - I changed nothing.

So what are we taking about here: a punkbuster issue that causes hardware failure and data loss (config files)? WTF!!! That is weak and super lame.

I had the same trouble and put it down to punkbuster and sent a ticket in to them and have had this reply

                  11/02/2005 02:06:19 - "Wouter Tromp"
Note #2: Do you still have these crashes? We disabled some items in Punkbuster yesterday after reports of crashes and lockups.

played now 2 games without any problems so hopefully (fingers crossed) they have sorted it out.

                    Re: Weird freeze problem

I just don't get it. Some 'items' in Punkbuster causing total system failure?! I mean CTD I can handle, but a BSOD? I havent had a BSOD since Windows 2000. While my system is back to normal, I am still ****ed. The type of hardware failure that PB caused cant be good for ones system, and moreover how often can we expect this to happen? I mean random BSODs and hardlocks are hard to trouble shoot. I was ready to RMA my RAM. F-ck PunkBuster, hard and in the a$$.

                      Re: Weird freeze problem

Agree totally Raves. How many people round the world replaced drivers, sat for hours trying out different settings, reinstalling windows and all the work involved and maybe even taking their rig into a shop to get it checked out (which I was thinking of doing) spending time and money in the process just because of PB.

I´ve never had a complete reboot without warning before ever (I am pretty new to computers). But luckely I have had expereince with PB. Couldnt play Battlefield Vietnam because of ctd. Seen many clan games won on cb in Farcry because of pb kicking half the team etc etc. The idea behind pb is great but it only stops the kiddies with their easy found hacks. It doesn´t seem to find any of the real hackers who just get a kick out of beating it but does penalise the normal player (probably 90% who don´t cheat) with random kicks or crashes to desktop!!!!

                      Rant Over.

Actually, it is appropriate since the lockups increased in frequency after the update. As I stated before, I can't even play more than half a minute without lockups. Also, I've ALWAYS suspected Punkbuster to be the culprit since I've ran EVERY other game fine with no problems. The ONLY time my PC freezes is when playing a mp match on a pb enabled BF2 server. NEVER EVER did that with any other game. In fact, the Half-Life 2 Lost Coast demo runs beautifully on my rig - w/ AA & AF and everything turned up to the max, I'm hitting an avg of 60+ fps on that demo.

So yes, just like ZRaves said, "F-ck Punkbuster."

                          Re: Weird freeze problem

I also had this Weird freeze problem that started on Sunday 30th October.
Updated punk buster but still the same freezing when i went to select spawn/kit

It wasn't freezing, just had no control over cursor, infact had no controls at all!!

Fixed it by starting bf, options, controls [maybe your boxes are all empty, mine were] and hitting reset to default

                          Apply

                          Play

                            Re: Weird freeze problem

I had problems with BF 2 also. I tried pretty much everything posted here without success. Then I ran into

Problem was a crappy firmware in the X-Fi sound card. This can be worked around by updating the motherboard BIOS. At least ABIT has a fix for this, dont know about others.

After updating the BIOS everything worked again. So, if you are having problems and have a X-Fi sound card, this might be a solution for you.

What a shame they keep releasing broken hardware (not to mention sw).....

I have this problem as of today

I have a 3.2ghz Intel so its not just AMD

When I get into a server, it locks my laptop SOLID, the only way I can get out is to force a restart. sometimes I dont even get to see the gun choice list.

I have done a reinstall of the game making sure that I deleted all the files left behind and still no good.

As someone suggested I also tryed joining a non punkbuster server and I still have the problem!?!:cry:
