I did my range guessing by telling a friend of mine to stand by a flag and then running as far as I could. 450m is the maximum range where you can actually expect to even have a chance of hitting something, 470 it's just grey against white, and at 500 it's just white against white.

edit: Oh, and I did actually hit him about 1 or 2 out of 5 times at 450m if I aimed above his head (hitting the body).

Would it be possible to get this onto a BF2 Recorder vid for us to view for ourselves? I'm in support of SK here, but I was wondering if I could get something in action to view.

AI is set to idle, so just stands around (Thanks to the guy who explained how to do that in the Tipps&Tricks forum). This is what I got: When I used the third horizontal line below the crosshair I´d get headshots every time (clearly visible with tracers added). This means that bullet drop @340m is about the distance between the top of a soldier´s helmet and his upper waist. I then tried using this information to score hits with the unmodified M24, it worked pretty well. I even scored some one shot kills (headshots), but getting the elevation right with normal zoom is kinda hard. Shooting without consideration of bullet drop also hits targets, but obviously mostly in the leg area. The random deviation makes it rather hard to give totally solid answers though, I might do some more testing later.
Nice job. I did alot of testing myself and like you said the deviation and the standard zoom makes it very hard to be 100% shure. At the ranges I snipe in the game though I just go for the head. Since they have bothered making drop it would be great if the sniper had a better scope and a range finder. They are suppose to become more accurate in the next patch too.

It would be great if you could give a link on how to setup your server like that. It would be interesting to test all the rifles. If you added tracers did you see where the line left your scope?

I used the single player mode in the demo for the testing. Edited the weapons .tweak file and put it back into objects_server.zip.
For still standing bots I had to set them to idle, by editing the mods\bf2\AI\aibehaviours.ai file and setting

                aiSettings.setBehaviour 0 Avoid
                aiSettings.setBehaviour 1 MoveTo
                aiSettings.setBehaviour 2 Idle
                aiSettings.setBehaviour 3 Fire
                aiSettings.setBehaviour 4 TakeCover
                aiSettings.setBehaviour 5 Change
                aiSettings.setBehaviour 6 Special
                aiSettings.setBehaviour 7 Revive
                aiSettings.setBehaviour 8 c4
                aiSettings.setBehaviour 9 Special2
                aiSettings.setBehaviour 10 Special3

all to Idle (like in the '2' case above).

You can get the tweak file text here:
                http://www.forumplanet.com/planetbat...id=1762498&p=4
                (Post #53).
Copy&Paste this into your usrif_m24.tweak file as described in the thread, and you´re set. I strongly urge you to make a backup copy of your objects_server.zip though, so you can quickly and safely revert to original BF2.

Thx for the info! I'm gonna see if I can make it work . I think the chinese sniper would be interesting to test because of the semi auto and the thin crosshair. If they do improve the accuracy next patch I might start using it alot more!

Ok this is not saying that there is not bullet drop, but this test really does not tell much.

How can I put this? If the velocity drop is normally set at 500, then a round at 1000 would not experience a drop at any distance. The round would only experience a drop at a lower number. It would be like having a rail gun and saying that if you lowered its speed down to 20 fps then it would have a drop. Well that is right, but a rail gun fires at 19066 fps. So it is not going to experience a drop.

All I am saying is that since this is game physics and not real physics, the numbers don't mean much.

If this is unclear, sorry I gave it a shot.

People that fly jets and actually use them for dogfighting should actually read this thread, because what Zag says about bullet drop here, is very relevant to the main guns on the jets for more than one reason. Something I have been aware of for a while, but haven't really said to anyone, but plan on making a 'Jet Physics' video one of these days and will have to mention it in there.

But alot of what Zag says does have bearing on the jets, not just the bullet drop either.

Yep, that´s from the muzzle. I did some more testing as the guys on PlanetBattlefield largely didn´t believe me. Results:

I set the deviation factors for the M24 to all 0, so I don´t have any movement or cone modifiers in them (tested it, firing while scoped and strafing). Then I tweaked the zoom a "bit" (set it from 0.2 to 0.01) and added tracers to the projectiles. What you now see is the pure bullet drop, there is no random deviaton or such thing applied.

                        border=0>
                        Nice proof!
One question--do you play around with the optic zoom on your M24? How come it looks so close to the target from where you shoot? I recalled at similar distance the optic zoom that I played is seem very small compared to your. Or is there any key that need to adjust the zoom of the scope to magnify the target?

Well, not quite...in real world there is also another deviation factor as well such as wind direction.

Re: Proof of bullet drop in the game

I'm pretty sure there is some bug when firing at an angle because Trying to hit a sniper in a crane will just hit the crane frame unless I aim well above him.

I guess there could be some bullet fall, the thing is that it's hard to believe because I fire straight at people and I still tend to hit them.

Oops, never mind about my question. For some reason I miss that "Then I tweaked the zoom a 'bit' (set it from 0.2 to 0.01)".
You know I wish that DICE could have some patch that allow sniper to adjust the dial in the scope.
