    Proof of bullet drop in the game

    [Edit 01-21-2006: Armando Marini confirmed bullet drop: "[...] there is gravity on all objects in the game, so the bullets do indeed drop." http://www.totalbf2.com/articles/article/4/2 Note that he´s wrong on the "not as pronounced part" though, as i explicitely deleted recoil from the rifle in my test, so there is no recoil that makes the drop look exaggerated on my images as he says.]

    I already posted this on the Planet Battlefield Forums, but I think it´s interesting for anyone who read even only one "There is bullet drop" "No it isn´t" "Yes it is" etc ... thread.


    I still have the demo on my comp, so I decided to mess around with the .con files there. What I did is editing the G36C´s bullet velocity. Default is 1000, I changed it to 10.
    You find the G36C´s con file here: mods\bf2\Objects_server.zip/weapons/handheld/usrif_g36c\usrif_g36c.tweak
    What you do is search for this passage:

    They are simply applying laws of physics with an adjustment offset to gravity when performing cosines and sines laws.

    So the lower your velocity the greater bullet drop is. With your velocity slow enough you can fire vertically and have it hit you.

            I always thought of it as bullet deviation but never considered the drop. I guess it is in the game.

                You can do it with any weapon, all handguns have a projectile velocity of 1000, and it seem all projectile are equally considered objects that are influenced by gravity. You can even speed up C4 packs to have a velocity of 1000, so you can literally fire them at targets.
                Be it an AT Mine, a C4 Pack or an M95 bullet, to the engine those are objects that are affected by gravity, handgun bullets only travel so fast (by default) that you can hardly see the effect (from your position, that is).

                  you're quite the good man for doing that, and quite the genius for thinking of that as a way to test! im too scared to go mucking around in the files for anyting like that

                    Wow, bravo. This is the most undeniable proof I have seen yet (however, I was convinced long ago that there was bullets were affected by gravity and that there was a travel time).

                      Hmm, so basicly someone who knows the right laws of physics can get the bullet velocity for the snipers and tell us at what range the bullet drops and how far it drops, shame theres no way of guaging ranges in BF2 for snipers.

                        Perhaps that's what the marks in the scope are for. Since you know your distance to any particular flag (LEFT-ALT 3d View), you can correct for bullet drop.

                        Only problem is in your example you lowered the speed from 1000 to 10 - that's a 100x difference. The bullet drop in your orginal image was 185 pixels so I increased the size of the image by 108% so the bullet drop is now 199 pixels. That means now the bullet drop is only 2 pixels (199/100):



                        Now the question now is how do we figure in deviation because if you notice in your shot there's another cloud of dust behind the gun.

                            Yep, that´s from the muzzle. I did some more testing as the guys on PlanetBattlefield largely didn´t believe me. Results:

                            I set the deviation factors for the M24 to all 0, so I don´t have any movement or cone modifiers in them (tested it, firing while scoped and strafing). Then I tweaked the zoom a "bit" (set it from 0.2 to 0.01) and added tracers to the projectiles. What you now see is the pure bullet drop, there is no random deviaton or such thing applied.

                            Bullet drop @approx 250m and position from where I fired. You can see the the drop isn´t excessive, but it is there.

                            Drop @350m or less. Unfortunately you get no impact signature anymore at that distance, so I had to try to snapshot the tracer while in flight. I hope it´s obvious how I calculated the distance, if not I can explain it.

                            Conclusion: There is bullet drop, it´s a hard fact. Everyone is free to do test it themselves. It´s of course debatable if the cone of fire is so large as to make bullet drop irrelevant, but I think you can at least increase the hit probability if you take bullet drop into account. At large distances bullet drop exceeds the height of a prone soldier.
