The problem is money. You don't get any before you sell the game.
So unless you are financed by an eccentric billionaire, you will have to publish the game before the funds run out.

Another factor is the internet. Now that everybody has internet you can just say "We will patch it after release". You couldn't do that 15 years ago when nobody had internet.

Consoles used to have better polished games, because it was impossible to fix them after release. But now they too have hard drives and internet connections, so expect QC to go down the drain for them too.

both very valid points eliminator and vreki. i just wanna point out that aside from looking a hell of a lot worse, vietnam was 100% more polished with a billion less bugs and a way more optimised engine. i think the problem here is we the gamers are shaping the market and the developers are taking full advantage. a game like bf2 for instance, looks like tons of fun on paper, and it is indeed fun ingame, so people buy it and the devs dont feel like they have to put the finishing touches on it, because they already made thier money. this works the opposite way aswell tough. if a game doesnt sell at all, the publisher will cut thier "looses" and support will cease. many many great games dont sell at all because they arent hitting a core audience or something of that nature. it seems that in this day and age, the only way you can be sure that a game you play will eventually have all the bugs and gameplay iorned out is if its a subscription game.

Actually I think those are two different bugs (though perhaps they sometimes coincide).

Bug 1) You spawn as a recruit with no career points (i.e. 0 points/40 to next rank) and therefore have no unlocks.

Bug 2) You spawn as the right rank (i.e. 57800 points/0 to next rank) and have all of your unlocks, and with all your accrued career time/kills but with no medals/ribbons/badges, so you get the awards all over again.

I've had these two happen to me on separate occasions. For example, getting any of the Explosives badges a second (or third, or...) would be impossible if the "get awards again" bug coincided with the "you have no unlocks" bug. No grenades/APMs/RDX/MMs = no badge. Bug 1 sucks and I just disconnect and reconnect. Bug 2 was great in climbing up to Brig. Gen., but once you get there it's meaningless.

                      That's acutally for BF2, not 2142.

Wait nm the actual file name says 2142... hmmm... it is the beta patch? You know they released that publicly. The newsletter is for BF2 for sure... the "direct link" patch says BF2142 1.4 though.... I think it might be the beta.

                          That's what confused me, too.

EDIT: Nevermind, it doesn't say anything that is a beta on the file, but it does so on the folder.

Actually I wouldnt mind if this game was content subscribtion.
Say $2 a month or something like that.
That way there could be a steady flow of new content for everybody, so the playerbase wouldnt be divided.

I just hope they fix the "no kit" glitch, where you join a server with your respective rank, but your kit is absolutely empty.
