Jim, unless we have access to the alpha we can't view or vote at those links. Maybe you could save the picture and host it elsewhere then post it here for us.
well one could argue that commanders don't make a game battlefield, as they weren't in 1942 or vietnam.

No, the leaked stuff didn't really tell much about how the game actually plays.
I have faith that the game will be good, it remains to be seen if it will be great.

But while I intend to buy it, I see no reason to preorder it before having tried the Beta.
Not unless my Gunclub discount unexpectedly appears.

Re: Did the alpha leaks help you decide on BF3?

Commander is really only useful in clan matches, in pubs is the worst kind of spam you can get.

I was thinking today, after relogging into BF2 and 2142; that the comm rose as it was, is already dated. 3D spotting is needed, BC2 and BF3 have levels of grphical complexity that make downright impossible to see enemies.
In BF2 and 2142 (tough a bit less) you don't NEED 3d spotting as the soldier's silouette is easily recognizable against a lot of backgrounds. There was skill in blending in, specially since you couldn't control the other guys graphical settings.

Be honest with yourselves. All you had to do in BF2 was set shadows to none and play with minimal effects and maximum draw distance and it was borderline wall hack.

What this game NEEDS is working out of the box squad voice chat; it needs a new social commrose to thank/ask for specific items but instant 3D spotting must remain available at the press of the Q. We DO need the tactical squad rose for setting orders outside of objectives.

Commander is not realy needed; not like in BF2/2142. We need some sort of field general for example, that everybody who is squadded up can spawn into; or just Squad leaders. The old UAV/supplies/Spotting are not really needed; but the Commander should be able to set orders; there are many ways to improve on him with no need to throw a fit because it's not there officially anymore.

BF3 gameplay looks like it will be incredibly aggressive. Sure, doing stupid things will get you killed, but tactical prowess is very rewarding. Just down to WHEN to reload can make or break an offensive; flanking feels so much more rewarding. I have not seen a match lost because of twitch gameplay, it's always down to people refusing to push when an opening is made.
Supressive fire makes a world of difference, bullets are scary for the first time in PC gaming; not because of the damage itself. It's a very atmospheric feeling of dread when you are under fire as everything come stogether, blurry vision, chilling sounds of chipping stone or steel ricochets; even tough you can try to and the controls allow you to, bunny hopping out of a corner will net you a facefull of lead.

It's down to who can keep the coolest head and aim the best, no lucky headshots at point blank; kneel and ADS and burst fire in the chest.

Yet the old "ok they are firing this way, I will abandon these guys who are not in my squad" will get all of you killed. I like that. If you want to retreat safely you have to put supressive fire on the attackers, make them stop firing at you or miss; then you can retreat. Or maybe you will ultimately overpower them.

I like it's not a matter of who has the better gun anymore, even tough some guns are "too good" when used properly.

If THIS is not a battle field experience... well I'll hang up my mouse. I cannot genuinely fathom somebody playing this and saying "oh it's boring, oh it's not good, oh it doesn't take any skill".

Vehicular combat is light years ahead of BC2 nd BF2 and every other game you have ever played. Yes, you still require support from an engie like in BC", but the LAV feels authentic; you go read up what the thing can do, and you can do most of it in game. But a well coordinated defense can crush them and stop them dead in their tracks.
I sincerely hope air vehicles keep this philosiphy in design: fun to control, difficult to master, rewarding but also very balanced with hard counters.

I'll just tell you this: the homing beacon is no longer needed because AT weapons work like they are supposed to work. They pack a damn powerful punch but the vehicle can take it. All that jazz about localized damage? True; and it works beautifully. All the times I have been destroyed felt fair as my gunners jumped ship after the first rocket. But with a good driver and a better gunner? Total domination for hours.

I want air to be like this too; let me rape if they refuse to acknowledge me, but let them have the power to stop me dead on my tracks when they bother to try. I should fear the buzzing sound of the lock on at all times; it should never be "oh someone sat in the suicide chair".

DICE has me amazed. I know in a few onths they will ruin this; but at launch? (well not at launch launch; I mean more like during the first month) You will be hard pressed to find a more compelling game. I also hope this is the most boring map they have. It is saddled by program bugs and inestability; but the few times you get a nice connection and performance off your PC and the bugs don't show up? EPIC. Not in the overused sense of the word. In the truest sense of the word.

        EPIC.

There will come a game in a while, where your squad pushes with you; and you flank the enemy completely even in the funneled tunnels where advancement is slow and you pay for every inch of terrain; where you will totally dominate them through superior tactics and team work and they won't even know what hit them. If you can work that out with pubbers, with friends and clanmates it will be close game after close game.

I don't think I'll ever play Conquest seriously again. There is no pressure to finish it, there is no RUSH.

And I digress; but there is so much I would like to talk about in detail... I'm waiting for the beta already and the 25th can't come early enough.

$60 through Origin? $100 AUD? Worth it, every penny. EFF MOD TOOLS. EFF STEAM.

I am thinking now, that bringing the old BF2 maps to this is a mistake. Let the past die in peace. It was good, but it's over. BC2 made me happy, it was a genuinely good addition to the franchise. I was hyped. But this? for me? It's like BF2 launch all over again. The game that dared to ditch the old design; very hard to improve upon. If BF2 was innovation BF3 is refination and sublimation and a lot of other words ending in ation. It is damn good and if you can't appreciat eit, I feel sorry for you, any of you; if you have become so cynic you can't appreciate something moving forward.

I don't care what the community says I should think, or what was a game "like it was intended". I'm seeing a great product here, and I wish I got paid for this cos this lip service is expensive man.

First day of Alpha, I was mad at the negative posters in the forums. I was wishing none of them bought this so I wouldn't have to deal with them.

Today? Just 3 days after I'm feeling sorry for them, they will let their prejudice and need to have some "rep" among themselves keep them away fro a great game. Topping BF2 is no easy task; but topping BF3 is gonna be next to impossible for DICE.

Re: Did the alpha leaks help you decide on BF3?

It is perfectly possible to tweak the 3D spotting so it doesn't act like an integrated wallhack. I agree it's hard to see enemies but it's the same in many games, in Red Orchestra when your squad attack a town you have like 30+ windows from where the enemies can fire + all the covers around and they can shot you from miles away, yet the attacking team always manage to progress. I know BF3 is an arcade game and the game is too fast paced to call for smoke or armored support etc but right now this is horrible and kill all the infiltration part, and get you killed from campers in bushes. Many people come with solutions better than the actual system, mine is spotting works the same as now but the Red Triangle only stays for 2-3 seconds, while it stays the whole duration on the minimap.

Commander is not really needed but it's a nice plus, just to be able to coordinate squads is a huge plus. Just don't give him any real powers so it doesn't affect to much the game (something like that but less abstract).

Commo-rose is a really useful tool and really cannot see why they wouldn't add it, their Q system for requests is horrible.

As for vehicles the APC can take a lot of rockets before being destroyed but the splash damage of its cannon has been reduced and it can be slowed down by destroying his wheel and disabled after too much damage, so it's just a different gameplay (durability vs firepower). I don't like the vehicle regeneration though.

I don't mind 3D spotting if it is going to stay, but it definitely needs to be adjusted. My preference would be that after tagged, the triangle would stay for 5 seconds or so unless you get behind cover and break line of sight. If you break line of sight, then the triangle disappears. Maybe a "last known position" marker could show up on the mini-map. Another thing that they could do would be to limit 3D spotting to within a squad and then give 2D spotting to the whole team.

I think everything is fine about the APC except that the main cannon is way too weak. The splash damage needs to be increased. But having it weak does increase the need for you to have a gunner, and the gun ports are actually somewhat powerful for once.

Just FYI if you know someone who has the Alpha you can actually have them install it on your PC and play it. They just have to be willing to let you login to their Origin account to play. My buddy got into the alpha came over Friday night and we tested out our theory. He logged into origin on my PC installed the Alpha demo and then let me play it for a bit.

Imagine that you are hiding from an APC with only a grenade launcher to defend you.
You fire at the APC, but instead hit a tree that topples over.
The next time you look up, the APC is on fire with a tree on top of it.

If they want to miss a game where stuff like that can happen, then too bad for them.
