2142er's don't know any better, they never experienced any great mods. All they had was a booster pack.

Seen EA-s 2010 FY Q3 results? I remember way back when we had our argument about reputable sources. I grinned so hard when I saw the numbers.

There is no way I can provide you with figures on how many people bought BF2 for its mods. But I can tell you that BF2 mod forums and subforums were filled with anticipation and discussions way before the game was even released. In 2005, one of the biggest reasons people got BF2 was because of Desert Combat, and TotalBF2 was a very, very crowded place. There was more discussion about mods for BF2 than there was discussion about BC2 and every other BF game after 2142 combined.

I can give you some stats about longetivity of shallow games, though. But youre a smart guy, youve probably had your eye on Steam and xfire stats page quite often. Nope. Cant see BC2 on TOP 10 anymore, and MW2 has lost over 70% of its daily playerbase since its release.

Releasing shallow games with no options is only one way to do business. You would have to be pretty narrowminded and with no memory of times before 2008 to not to believe otherwise. Next thing youre going to tell me that competitive and organized gaming is from the devil.

What you see on TotalGamingNetwork is a direct result of this. Glad youre still enjoying the deep, interesting and enlightening discussions, useful informarion, tips and tricks, and a great variety of different people.

Crunch, I admit, I did a lot of flaming back then, but that was out of boredom more than anything. People tend to not to remember that those arguments were mostly about nerfing one thing or the other, or how many awesome debates/arguments were had in civilized way, aimed at coming up with solutions for certain problems.

You do make a good point; a lot of newer games don't have the same longevity that previous games like BF2 did, but I don't think that's entirely based off of mods, although in the case of BF2 I'm sure they must have contributed.

I just don't think that's a hard and fast rule about all games though (i.e. including mod support boosts longevity). It certainly doesn't attract new players, I think it mostly would keep old players still playing.

I don't think mods are a BAD thing, I just think that a game can still be successful without major mods, and there are plenty of games like that, in the same genre or other genres. PC gaming as it stands right now is rather lack-luster, but I think that will change in the market by it's own devices. Will it manifest itself the same way BF2? Maybe, or maybe not.

Or just to justify developers decisions with some "rational" arguments about how everyone needs to do what they need to do for a buck or two.
According to wiki: Battlefield 2 has sales of over 2,250,000 copies worldwide, as of July 2006.
Numbers like "hundreds (if not thousands)" are insignificant when you compare to sales in the millions.

So I think the mod community overestimates their own importance. What matters for EA is how many extra sales will come from mod tools. The kind of "loyalty" the need is not the kind that sticks to old games and demand continued support, but the kind of loyalty that buys expansions and new releases.

I do notice that EA has been sucking up to the PC community as of late... For Crysis 2 they have been maintaining that its not going to be overly consolised (in the graphics sector)...

You mean a game featuring fixes to bugs which should have been in BF2.

Its a bit too soon to say yet, but the future is a PC that has no OS on it that will reside on the internet. Thats the average persons PC.

There will still be video cards and hard drives, but there will be no moving parts and it wont be worth upgrading.

I'll let you know if I am right or not in 20 years

Oh yeah, it wasnt all fire and brimstone way back then, but I lurked until I knew I KNEW what was talking about. It was very intimidating being new to FPS AND online play like Battlefield. I dont even remember most the arguments from back then. I just came for the information I needed and went on my way, which is how its still done today with the guest count being so high.
