I don't see the point in adding hand held stingers... we already have to deal with an abundance of IGLA sites, .50 cal machineguns mounted on jeeps, APCs and tanks, mobile AA vehicles, jets and other helicopters. Oh, and the infantrymen have AT kits as well.

I think we're well covered. To ask for more would be greedy...

If you manage to stay alive long enough to get a lock, wait for flares to deploy and disappear, wait for a second lock while surviving the cannons. bombs and missiles then yes, they're very effective. The problem with stationary AA is that everyone knows where they are, jets know when one is occupied (they show up on HUD) and they offer 0 protection to the user.

AA is very effective now. The cannons on mobile AA actually do damage now, I've been able to kill jets just with the cannon and the missiles are much more reliabale. The problem is that there's so few AA vehicles on some maps, gulf of oman being a prime example.

.50 cal machineguns don't do crap unless you're hovering still, APCs and tanks usually aren't trying to shoot helis out of the sky... mobile AA is useful, but is too few and far between, and honestly other helicopters and airplanes produce the highest threat.

I just think the ability for one or two people to fly around raining death on everything everywhere just shouldn't be possible in any balanced game, not without a bit of luck at least.

APCs and tanks shooting at choppers just makes them easier targets. I don't know how many times I have not seen an APC or tank until they foolishly tried to shoot me down. They are almost useless against a chopper. It's like the people who throw grenades at tanks, it only gives their position away.

If you do use mobile AA it's best you play support so you can rearm yourself. Those things run out of ammo fast. The only real treat to a good chopper crew is an even better chopper crew or someone good with cannon in jets.

50 cals tear through helis, hovering or not. I wish more people would use the little jeeps for taking down helicopters :P

              Deesies is still here, yaaaaaaaaaaay!

Serious question though, how bad is the prone accuracy penalty? Its one of the better things about BF2142, is it going to put an end to drop-roll-headshot medics?

It's not quite as severe as 2142's, it doesn't make support weapons useless but at the same time, it has pretty much gotten rid of the instaprone-instakill thing. You'll still get the odd, lucky proner but it's not even nearly as reliable as it was before.

I shoot helis with the APC and tank all the time and I find it pretty effective. I don't go right out in the open and do it, though.

Agreed, I love engaging choppers with the 50s. I will usually wait until they have gone past me, or are focusing on something else before I light them up, and by the time they can swing around and try to run a line on me, they are smoking bad or already going down. Even if they are maneuvering, a little leading takes care of it.

As Sloi pointed out, the means to down the choppers are plentiful if you play as a team and fight smartly.

I still hate the one shot killmissile they have. There's nothing lamer than dying to something you can't defend yourself against.

If it had less damage, I could escape, bail out or repair.
If it was harder to control, I could possibly evade it.
If it had shorter range it would have to get closer to the battle to use it effectively.

                      ---

I also hate bombers. The ones that drop several bombs at once. AA is the only effective thing against it from the ground which leads back to my initial gripe about there not being enough AA on maps D:

Hey AA actually works now. Got a fair share of AA kills today. You just have to remember not to sit in it for ages looking for something to kill, only use it when you actually see the chopper/jet.

Road Rage is awesome by the way, had a few epic rounds today.

aye Road Rage you can rack up those Linebacker kills, lots of silly pilots in those bombers

not to mention big tank battles down the highway

That's why I'm liking the EF and AF maps more. There's more AA around and more places to hide with them :)

Nice to know that ground AA systems are more effective. It seems I'll be getting more kills from those things

One trick I used to do on Linebackers, Tunguska, and PLA equivalent was to get on the gunner's seat so that if I saw hostile aircrafts in my line of sight yet too far to lock and launch the missiles on time or simply in a very poor position to do so, the AA vehicle wouldn't have automatically locked onto the target warning the pilot an AA system was nearby. Similar to how pilots are on bomb-mode by default so as to not alert enemy pilots to be evasive or how radar operators used to turn off their radar to avoid detection by the enemy's radar in real life.

Of course, this doesn't work if there are a lot of hostile infantries nearby or the mobile AA is the hottest thing for your team, enough for your teammates to steal it.

I didn't know that, thanks for the info. I also noticed that mobile AA has more powerful cannon (good against infantry ).

I must try it in Road Rage :>
