Well, I would call it football (or voetbal, where I'm from), if it weren't for the fact that the yanks our here would correct me that there is no goalie in football.
You know, gotta keep it nice and simple for these guys, make sure they can understand it

Attack choppers are by far the most powerful weapons in BF2, and in teamwork aspect, most crucial to the victory of a team. A squad can hop around and capture flags, a good squad can do it effortlessly. A helicopter can render not only that squad useless, but render all pieces of armor in the game completely useless. Not to mention enemy CAS. Dont believe me? When a soloer takes your whole armor and helicopter fleet out of the picture in less than 300 seconds, and youre left with infantry units only, thats bad news for you, your KDR, your team and your ego.
Its cool to hop into one and have a go at having fun. Dont have any illusions about people liking it though. Theres not a vehicle in game, that can be responsible for capping out the entire USMC team on Oman in less than 3 minutes. Thats 180 seconds, and the team is stuck on the ship.
So why give this powerful tool, and armor and jets aswell, to someone who has absolutely no idea how to operate it. The cost of 1 persons fun, is the mysery of 31 other players. The cost of 1 persons mysery, is the fun of 31 other players. Maybe not a fair tradeoff to the victim, but if Im running around with my Medic kit, leading my squad to capping flags, I breathe a lot easier when theres no armor to block me, no OpFor squad coming any time soon and no enemy chopper blade whistles in my ears.
As for skilled players playing for the team or for themselves. Theres a difference between getting nice scores and having the skillset, the potential to get down into business and turn the tables. I can do it in jets, sloi can do it in choppers, some great infantry blokes can do it on the ground. Once you gain that level of skill and confidence, you will put your effort into bringing results for your team. If you lack the confidence and skill, its perfectly understandible, if you cant do it. Cant feel responsible for the results.Comment

If you have anything new to say about soloing that hasn't already been beaten to death in one of the above threads (or hey, let's expand that to the search too, considering that's through page four, and only the threads which are BLATANTLY discussing soloing), I'll give you 1337 reputation points.
I bet none of y'all can.Comment

How do you practice offline in an attack helo? Do you mean singleplayer or do you mean create a server with no-one on it. Because I've tried the latter and it's really hard to practice gunning when ur the only person on the whole map. Have any tips? The way I see it, as a long-time BF2 player, not skilled at the level Sloi is (people, please put your egos aside and admit it, or at least do some research, this guy *IS* really good. There are amazing players out there), but not Cpt. Random MacNooblet either, is this:
The subtle, but crucial, difference between the helicopters/jets/tanks and normal infantry combat is simple.
When you buy BF2, play offline for a couple hours and hop into a pub server not terribly experienced and play medic, that's fine. If you die most of the match, that's fine. It'll cost your team some tickets, but it's nothing that a good team can't overcome (at least on a pub level).
Even if you end up with 2 kills and 20 deaths, it's not a big deal. If your team is truly better than the other one, they'll win.
You know why that is? The only resources you are wasting is your own time and 'life'. Everyone has their own time and life, so you're not denying anything to your team members.
Now, when you take a valuable asset like a helicopter that there's only one of and decide to use it to go do barrel rolls into buildings, you are denying your team one of the key things they need to win this match. Please remember that not only are you preventing anyone from using the helicopter effectively, you are also making your teammates die a lot more. Since there's no one around to take out the enemy helicopter, it will be able to kill infantry unhindered for most of the match. Your team will have a significantly harder time capping flags, or even just surviving.

Maybe this'll explain it: a soccer reference
-When you are learning online 'infantry style', in soccer you would be sprinting across the field uselessly, wasting your own breath and missing some passes that others would have pulled off. It's not optimal, but it's something a good team can cover for.
-Learning online in a chopper is like constantly tackling your own goalie. No matter how good your own team is, the opponent will be able to score again and again and again without serious effort, because you have no real defense to speak of. Most of the time, your team's goalie will be lying on the ground, or yelling at you, or trying to fight you off. While the action of tackling players is well meant, you're doing it wrong and hurting your team to such a degree that they are at a serious disadvantage.
I hope that explains it :)
I sympathise with you and I disliked being 'kicked out' of choppers when I was new to the game, but there is a very good reason for this behaviour.
While some people are arrogant pr*cks that seem to think they are the best pilot ever, you'll find most people have simply seen so many newbies take control of the guns and fail miserably that they automatically assume you will as well.
The best way to fly helis in BF2 is to squad up with someone, and have sufficient practice OFFLINE.Comment

if it bothers you that much why play in that atmosphere why dont you get onto a better server that suits your rank and ability. a lot of people on the public servers havent even set up there controls and graphics never mind flown a heli before.Actually, I do care.
That's why I cuss a storm in-game when our jets are preoccupied with loop-de-looping around instead of bombing, keeping the enemy jets busy and attacking helis. I also just love when our choppers are flying around aimlessly, snapping pictures of the horizon and reciting poetry to one another.
Nothing pisses me off more than seeing valuable assets being misused. Losing != having a good time, and I sure don't like making an effort, only to see everyone else sitting on their backsides discussing a Hamlet passage.
If you're incompetent in air vehicles, why not practice elsewhere and leave the assets for people who actually know what they're doing? You can still help and have fun capping flags. It doesn't take extensive practice to do that.

Singleplayer is your friend. Start up a Daqing or Dalian server and go take the chopter. Just tell the bot to bail out and he will. Your gonna have to solo coz bots are braindead and wont line you up under any circumstanses. Press F2, right click, and missile away

I thought having a bot pilot was pretty good practice for gunning with an average pub pilot. They ignore spots and refuse to line you up, just like most real pilots in pubs. You have to make your own shots happen. And learn to curve that missile quickly.Comment

LMAO  such a good point!
Although your signature is a poor combination of being huge, extrusive and downright painful on the eyes.Comment

You can fly with a bot as pilot, align yourself then press F2 and shoot. Bot will switch to pilot. Then press F1 and bot will switch back to gunner. Repeat :) Or solo if you can
You can also install singleplayer 64 player mod, you will have plenty of targets to practiceComment

For flight techniques, you can go on an obstacle map like Dragon Valley: start from the carrier and use the pipes lining up the map to slalom through. You can go over and under as well, along with using the structures at the docks and PLA airfield. Learn to fly backwards (controlled, of course), sideways, develop the habit of using "mouselook" to scan for threats outside of your immediate field of vision... et cetera. The only missing item is heli on heli rocket fighting, but that's not a specialization you're likely to need at this point in the game's life. Still, if you absolutely want to learn it, you can recruit someone from this board to play around in an empty server.
For gunning? Start by lining up static targets, choosing progressively smaller until you're at a point where you can do it in your sleep. Then, take messed up shots, and what I mean by that is shooting in different positions and handicaps. Once you can redirect the missile back on target and successfully hit every time, start doing it in singleplayer on Dragon, Dalian or Daqing 16 players. Once you can do all of that comfortably, you're ready to go in public servers, but choose them based on the number of players... you don't want too many people, because then you risk hindering the team. If you go on servers with less than 15 players, chances are good that no one will be in a heli on your team... or worst comes to worst, only one will be in use if you're on dalian, daqing, dragon or kubra.
Work your way from there.Comment
