Remember that BF2 isn't really like other "twitchy" shooters. There's a certain amount of randomness no matter how well you take aim. No one really becomes a "Rambo" in this game. If they do it tends to be in very narrowly defined situations.

Do you want to be a good player or do you want to be good at BF2?

IMO those are two entirely different things. If you want to be a kick *** player, then by all means play city maps and run the well worn routes between Hotel and Square over and over again. Then check your stats for a good K/D ration and try again. But you've got a lot of catching up to do. Becoming obsessed with your stats as an indication of how good a player you are, can be a dead end street. There's always some one better, they could be stat padding, and your more then likely going to come across hackers and cheaters playing BF2 like a twitchy shooter. It's where their hacks become the most useful.

If you want to be good at BF2, do many things well. Know maps, know the spawns and where they are located. Find ways of getting to them instead of assaulting them from the front every time. Join a squad. Lead a squad. Lay mines in chokepoints. Know the choke points, and when mining them is the most advantageous. May AA against choppers. Find ways to capture the first spawns on difficult maps (Wake, STM etc etc). Take and hold an enemy's most prized spawn point (air strips and such). Don't be afraid to take a bad game statistically to win by defending something.

This game has so much more to offer then playing city maps and checking your K/D , rank, and global points after every round. That's not what it does best. It makes many different things excellent contributions to a win, rather then just killing as many people as you can every round. That's really what it does the best. It's simply not a very good individual shooter for a test of your skill and hand eye coordination. As many have said they play for 100s of hours and still get owned. There's a reason for that, the reason is the game is geared towards team work, not "ramboism". Although many try and play it that way and will tout their statistics as proof, it's only they who are fooling themselves. Any one boasting about K/D ratios in infantry most likely is manipulating them by selective map and server selection. Even right down to where they spawn and how they play. It's a one dimensional way of looking at the game, and really a shame since there is so much more.

        So......

Don't worry about how "good" your are. Concentrate on knowing the game, and what it takes to win. Be a good teammate, and a squad member or leader. Have fun, met a group you like to play with and play with them often. You'll get more out of the game then any person who constantly is checking their stats and then adjusting their game play to influence them. They're playing a certain way because of a mindless and simple computer program that collects information. The better and more fun way to play is to simply play the game and experience all it's elements.

Re: How do you get good at BF2?

          STM= Songhua Stalemate.

Which is the wrong name (and a bad abbreviation). I meant Operation Clean Sweep, in relation to Wake Island, and being an Squad Leader.

You don't get a lot of points, but getting a foot hold on the Island as an SL and hiding, is appreciated by many.

Some times hiding in plain site. You'd be surprised how few people regularly check the the culvert below Control Center.

Also parking the RIB with the the enemy's RIB makes it stand out less when it grays. Destroying it immediately when landing any place else is key. Don't let it be seen. A smart defensive squad will watch for gray RIBS popping up.

It's the little things that make a good BF2 players and make the game fun.

Switching to single shot is WAY more accurate than automatic, especially over medium to long distance.

And read all the guides on this site (helos, jets, classes etc.) they have answered every single question I have had on bf2 so far.

Disfigure had the best advice. Wish I had read that before I started playing way back then.

As a noob I think I might go Assault Kit for a bit. Better body armor than the other kits. Well, except AT but thats a tough kit for a noob.

Oh, and for any others that were wondering:

              puerile \PYOO-uhr-uhl; PYOOR-uhl\, adjective:
Displaying or suggesting a lack of maturity; juvenile; childish. :) I had to look that one up.

Quit playing infantry only and Road to blahblahblah/Karkland. Those are crutches for players that don't want to learn the game. Play on Kubra Dam/Wake/Daquing/Clean Sweep. Learning stealth and manuever warfare are paramount. Remember that you don't have to be the quicker trigger finger if you've flanked an opponent or are shooting them in the back. Never directly engage an enemy if you don't have to. Out think and out manuever them always.

If you want to try to be as useful to your team as possible, then spawn medic and stick with your SL. Keep him alive.

But if you want to be a well-rounded player, then you need to choose your kit based on the situation. Sometimes Spec. Ops or AT to get rid of an enemy tank. Or support to lay down heavy fire and resupply your squad. Things like that. Try to be as versitaile as possible.

And remember, the stock weapons are quite good. Many players use them so get used to these weapons.

Kudos for looking that up! If you're even more curious, it's derived from the Latin noun 'puer' ... meaning 'boy'... which is very applicable to some servers.

Re: How do you get good at BF2?

The best and fastest way to get better at BF2 is to improve your situational awareness.

The majority of BF2's playerbase are so oblivious that they can only see whats directly infront of them on the screen; while the best players have a good idea of whats going on all around them, and all around the map.

I can guarantee that even if you're not a good twitch gamer, that you'll become an all-star player, merely by knowing where a dangerous situation is; how to prevent it from spreading; how to counter it by dividing or ambushing; and most importantly, how to avoid it when things get too heated.

Just play smart, and you'll become the target of hack whines, instead of the one making them within the near future.

Take it square between the eyes and be happy most pilots have too much of ego to bale out and cap a spawn to win a game. They'd rather get one more kill then win a game. Well most of them anyway.
yer, good advice - i just get so annoyed at some of the flying guys - some of them just seem to only ever fly and do nothing else, becoming a one dimensional player imo.

Their is only ever a couple of jets that you can potentially get into at a time and I always seem to not get my hands on one to practice and get some experience.

I'll just keep practicing and get sworn at or called a noob for a while yet ....

tbh the best way to get good at bf2, is to not have a job or have to go to school, sat at home all day everyday, which is what i was doing for the 1st 8months of BF2 :p and where i racked up most of my points

There are plenty of losers out there who have logged 2000+ hours, but have worse stats that the average player in BF2. So what if they have 200,000 points, if 180,000 of those are revive points?

The reasoning is simple; they only know how to point whore, they don't know how to play. Thats not 'good' in any sense of the word.

You don't get good at this game by getting into the habit of grenade or revive spam in Karkand. Afterall, the moment you step out of your habit based element, you're as helpless as a kitten in a chinese resteraunt.

You get good at this game by playing every stage, getting a feel for every gun, and knowing your surroundings; thus knowing what your enemy will do, even before he knows.

Awareness is perhaps the most important skill to learn. Foresight as a byproduct of awareness is the second most useful skill. Both will help you to excel, and will help your team to win at the same time.
